2024.11.30 04:50 keepfighting90 Rewatching 'Lost' - it's been 20 years and no other show has scratched the same itch for me
I started a rewatch of Lost after a long time, and now halfway through the 3rd season, I still find it to be a completely singular and unique experience that no other TV show has captured for me. I'm trying to pinpoint exactly what it is because in the past years we have had many big-budget shows with ensemble casts featuring really good acting, flashbacks and compelling stories but Lost still stands alone.
I think what really stands out to me, now that I'm rewatching the show, is the atmosphere. Lost just has this incredible mood and vibe that completely immerses you into the setting. It feels mysterious - the writing does an amazing job of just putting you in the shoes of the characters and trying to uncover the secrets of the island. Just regular people thrown into this extraordinary situation.
The setting definitely helps - Hawaii just looks so simultaneously primal, otherworldly and beautiful. It's almost like being on an alien planet. The steady stream of revelations and discoveries really gives you a feeling of grand adventure. It's a survival story at the end of the day, and I think those narratives always strike a chord in some subconscious parts of ourselves.
Many other shows have attempted the mystery box thing, but even with some unsatisfactory answers, Lost is still the best to do it. Maybe it's because the pieces that make up its mystery box are somehow just fundamentally more...interesting and fascinating. A mysterious island. A secret underground hatch. A strange monster made of smoke. A group of strangers prowling the forest. Long-ago secret science experiments.
Over the years I've watched a lot of shows similar to Lost. Severance, From, Yellowjackets, Dark etc. and they're all great in their own ways. But none of them have come close to the sheer sense of awe and wonder Lost was able to generate in me (I think Dark came the closest).

 | Background information: I've never met this woman because we all live cross country from each other and she never reaches out to my husband. She did not attend our wedding and did not reach out to say congrats or anything. My husband and I got married earlier this month. When we got our professional pictures back I posted pictures of my family and the grooms dad's side. The reasoning is because I do not have the numbers of a lot of the grooms side and figured it was easier for them to see them and save them. My side is very large. And it was easier to post our family picture then send it to everyone. It has been two weeks since then. Today my husband and I woke up to see his aunt had posted on MY wall on Facebook asking why her side wasn't posted. She didn't bother to reach out to either of us to ask. If she had she would have known that my MIL and her family that came to the wedding and I all had a group chat where I personally thanked them for celebrating with us, shared all the pictures to, and chatted about how much we enjoyed seeing each other. My husband and I have also already sent out our wedding thank you's and printed pictures of people if they were in them. I was shocked by the audacity to post this publicly on my Facebook. I reached out to her privately and said I did not appreciate her doing this and asked why she didn't bother picking up the phone and try calling my husband or I before she acted this way. Guess what, never answered lol. My mother in laws mom called and apologized for her daughter's behavior which I told her wasn't her fart and there was no need for anyone to apologize her daughter. She expressed how mad she was at her daughter for this and how it was not the feeling of the entire family. Let me set the scene: my mom’s a mage, my dad’s a prot warrior, and lately, there’s this DPS warrior they’ve been running dungeons with who’s apparently the funniest guy in the world. Every day, it’s “Oh, he’s so good at pulling mobs!” or “Did you hear his goblin impression? So funny!” Meanwhile, my dad’s just… struggling. He tries to tank, but he’s out here with quest greens and a shield that honestly looks like it belongs on a level 10 paladin.
Here’s the thing: I know my dad’s not the best at holding aggro. I’ve seen him sunder-spamming while my mom’s getting smacked by mobs. But he’s trying, okay? He even baked cookies last night mid-dungeon. Baked cookies! Who does that?! My mom told him to “slide them under the door” while she was in a private call with the DPS guy to go over, I don’t know, DPS meters or whatever. My dad looked like he’d just gotten crit by a boss.
And this warrior guy? He’s out here acting like he’s Thrall himself. “I’m not trying to steal your wife, bro.” Sure, dude. You’re in private calls with her after every dungeon, helping her “maximize Fireball uptime.” Meanwhile, my dad’s just standing there, eating the cookies he made, watching his self-esteem drop.
It’s so awkward in our house right now. My dad keeps muttering stuff like, “I’m the tank, it’s my job,” while my mom is laughing in the other room, probably at some new goblin joke. I just want to level in peace, but the tension is so thick I can’t even stealth through it.

This is well trodden ground but figured I'd give my one anecdote.
I'm a casual pvper, I try to grab Rival every season. I can usually do it but I mostly only have time towards the end of the season b/c of PVE things, etc.
I've run 246 SS matches as resto druid, mostly stuck at 1600-1700 the whole time.
I am doing this celebration crap, so a lot of time flying around to old places, so I did some feral queues, got 1829 in 32 matches, I haven't watched any videos or read any guides except for grabbing the talent choices off of murlok.
It's interesting to note that when they turned on the inflation, the only noticeable change was the DPS in my lobbies got worse (LOSing more, not popping defensive CDs, fewer interrupts on me).
What I'm not sure on is if it's b/c of the nature of healing in SS, or because the healing population is so much smaller? I guess I don't care, if I'm going for rating, I'll go dps and and if I'm farming % for the mount I'll go healer.
