So. I made an oopsie and never did this for Devblog 53. I started writing it, got distracted by work and stress, and then just kind of left it sitting in my .txt program for a month. Whoops. But hey, now you get a double-length devblog condensing. Now, one might think that this defeats the purpose of condensing the devblogs... And you'd be right, but that's my fault.
For the sake of ease of understanding, I'm going to divide every section up into a "Devblog 53 and 54" segment and I'll cut my "words condensed" part from the end.
Filipe's Section - Lead Programmer
Devblog 53 - Work has mostly been spent working on changes to the diet system. How your hunger scales with your growth, resulting in higher hunger needs for larger animals. Salt-licks have been modified to better help with vomit sickness, but at the cost of draining a nutrient while in use (you can choose which one in the character menu)
Confirmation that all carnivores being able to egg-thief right now is a temporary thing that's mostly for testing purposes in preparation for future designated egg-thieves. Also, some additons have been made to let server owners better customize their servers.
Devblog 54 - Mostly work on bug fixes and Allo's special ability. Assumedly its grapple since it's mentained that "some key animations" tied to that ability are still in production, and I don't think it would take too long to make "really fast run" as an animation.
A lot of work has been done on Rex, and now you can eat the trees that fruit grows on, with the downside that it cuts off that tree as a future food source, as the trees are needed for food to respawn later. Also Gastroliths. You can eat rocks to reduce your stomach content to better control your nutrient intake.
Ariel's Section - Programmer
Devblog 53 - Changes to the nesting system which were present in the recent hordetest. Scent was added to eggs because now they can be picked up and eaten. A lot of work was also done on Maia, and it actually went fairly well except for grazing.
Devblog 54 - More work on Maia, which is a getting close to completion, as it's currently in the hands of the QA team for testing. The language used suggests that it's baaaaaasically done, so Don's words last devblog (listed below) seem reasonable about it being in an upcoming hordetest.
Some new work is also being done on Ptera now, though nothing specific was cited. I doubt this is the air-currents, based on what Don said below, assuming he's to be believed (big ask, I know).
Amar0k's Section - Programmer
Devblog 53 only. Navigation work for fish, swimmers, and flyers. Also the ability for fish to try to eat smaller players, as you've likely already seen. A lot of back-end work on improving AI and how they affect performance, creating hordes of Compies and Pteros, but this system is still a WIP. Some RCON stuff for server owners as well.
Bryn's Section - Animator
Devblog 53 only. Rigging has been being done, and Kentro is the first dino to test out a new rigging system. Regular animation has been done on Maia and Allo, mostly. This is acompanied by a Maia attack animation and Allo's new walking animation.
Wedge's Section - Sound Designer
Devblog 53 - Mostly work on Maia, its adult calls have been getting some polishing, and the juvie is staying fairly consistent with Legacy's sounds. Then-current work was on syncing its footsteps for quadrupedal and bipedal locomotion, and attack sounds.
Devblog 54 - Maia only needs 4 more adult sounds to be complete. Pounced, Pinned, Blind, and Female Courting. After that, those sounds are being adjusted on the juvie stage. Some of its sounds are being made more breathy. Some adjustments are also being made to reverb to improve how easy it is to judge the distance of sounds you hear. Some adjustments also made to heavy footsteps
Visualtech's Section - Environmental Artist
Devblog 54 only. Some fresh new visuals for the underground transit system (seen in Dondi's segment of Devblog 53) Not much else to say, the human guy is making human stuff.
Tapwing's Section - 2D Artist
Devblog 54 only. A really nice pair of illustrations for Evrima's first two proper Apexes, Rex and Trike. Specifically in post-victory combat poses against eachother. Looks really nice.
Hypno's Section - Quality Assurance Lead
Devblog 53 - A lot of videos were posted of bugs found on the QA branch. I suggest checking these videos out for yourself, as I think it's important that for all the bugs the game has right now, you see the bugs that they managed to find and fix before they made it to the live version.
Devblog 54 - Second verse, same as the first, this time featuring Maia, who has been pretty thoroughly compatibility tested against all the other playables' mechanics. This time a link was also included to the official bug report form. After all the videos of bugs, some notes about Maia as a playable were made. Tanky and Swift, with moderate damage. It has a "shove" ability while running which can send smaller creatures flying (Something that I was hoping Para would get, but oh well, it could still get it)
Kissen's Section - Producer
Devblog 53 only (which is weird, I can't remember the last time her name missed a devblog). Most of what she said was just decscribing the animations that were posted in her section. Plenty of animations for upcoming playables, as well as new AI for juvies to hunt. On top of all of that, we get quite a few elder models, a few of which might be familiar to those who have seen the old Trello roadmap, but some entirely new ones have also been shown off.
Director's Commentary - Dondi's Section
Only present on Devblog 53. Seems testing has wrapped on them making sure that the game still works if you turn off migration zones, and the answer is yes. Yes it does. Some new UI that's more in-line with the current living roadmap was shown off, as well as better in-game UI that finally replaces the big "hold "E" to eat" text that used to appear, among other things.
Some screenshots were shown off of some human structures, featuring a Rex for scale. Specifically this time, of the underground transit system.
And some confirmations of things that are supposed to be in the next hoardtest: Thermal vents and air currents, something that has been shown off for Ptera long before it was even added to the game 3 years ago. Maia will be in one of, if not the first horde-test, of the next patch for the game. Some things he posted without context that are also meant to be in the hordetest: Gastroliths. Spawn Codes (friend-spawning, if I recall correctly), Nesting Zones, Replay updates.
My thoughts:
Devblog 54 was a lot better information-wise than devblog 53, but devblog 53 had a lot more eye-candy. Hypno, as always, is the MVP of almost every devblog he appears in. Not much else to say aside from "Whoops, sorry I missed a month."

2024.12.01 02:26 DeltaDelta77 Newbie Short Rib Fail. Help please.
 | The short version: I made braised short ribs in a Staub Dutch oven tonight and clearly made a bunch of mistakes. This is the first time trying something like this. I followed what appeared to be a really simple recipe on YouTube (enter “Williams Sonoma Braised Short Ribs). Longer version: I really like cooking, but am not skilled or that great a cook. I really want to get better at this thing. I’m a dad of 4 boys and do the bulk of cooking in our house. I’m not very good but I do enjoy it. I do know my way around the grill (I make a lot of grilled chicken, various steaks, pork chops and tenderloin). My boys don’t complain much but I want to up my game a bit. I recently made some really solid “one pot pastas” (I kinda impressed myself to be honest and that rarely happens). Feeling inspired, I researched a bunch of “one pot recipes” and found my way to some Dutch Oven recipes. I bought a Staub Dutch oven and decided to try my hand at short ribs. I never made anything like this before. I watched a bunch of YouTube videos and settled on the aforementioned recipe. I was confident. I bought quality bone in short ribs from a local butcher. In hindsight, the recipes didn’t have measurements. So I estimated based on what the guy was doing. I started with some olive oil, browned the short ribs “fat side down” and took them out and set aside. Turned the heat down a bit to medium. Next I went in with the onions for a few mins. Then carrots for a few mins. Then garlic until fragrant. Then tomato paste and let that brown a bit. (Again, newbie here). I felt like there was maybe a little too much oil/fat at this point (compared to what I saw in videos). Here’s where I think I started to go wrong. I added flour and maybe a tad more than I should have (just under 1 cup). It clumped up so much. But I let it cook like the video said knowing I still had to add the wine and beef broth. So I did. Added some wine and stirred. Then added some beef broth. Stirred. Then added back my browned short ribs. They were probably half submerged. Lid went on and in the oven at 350. At 1.5 hours I checked it. Meat was 195. And the liquid was simmering. (See the first photo) I know it has to be “fork tender” and mine wasn’t. And the liquid seemed thick, so I added some more beef broth, lowered the oven to 325, back in it went. I cooked it for about 4hrs total and pulled it. Honestly I think it could have been left in longer. The meat was still fatty but I think leaving it in longer would solve that. What was cooked was actually pretty decent! Where I think I went wrong, The “sauce” was very thick and brown (like a gravy). And very fatty. I feel like most that I have seen are a darker “burgundy” color. Mine looked like thanksgiving day gravy. Why? Should it be this way? (See the second photo) I tried to explain exactly what I did. I’d appreciate any feedback. Not sure where my journey's going to take me in the upcoming year. I used to prolifically write unsent letters to the man I'm limerent for and post them to come back later and process my thoughts. I figured taking moments to collect and dissect my thoughts in anonymity was the only avenue to try and get a grip on my brain and not inadvertently ruin the lives of others. It's not like a can go NC with him because we work together and collaborate often.
The "getting to know them" cure never worked. I've learned he can be frustratingly cynical. Sometimes he's flat-out dismissive on certain subjects where he's objectively wrong, but it hasn't diminished how often he lives in my mind rent free. My therapist wasn't much help; there was no disgust or warning against my thoughts despite the fact that both the man I'm limerent for and myself are married to other people. The Internet certainly has no problem calling me a horrible person even though I dare not act on anything.
It's easy to tell me that I'm disloyal when no one sees the day-to-day efforts to be supportive and keep this marriage afloat, all the while loathing myself and knowing he deserves better than a failure like me. Maybe it all can be boiled down to when my husband left my trust in shambles years before I met my limerent coworker. Maybe it is the inescapable coping mechanism of childhood abuse. But I'm not ready to resign and abandon my entire life. I worked too hard to survive and get here.
I have no resentment towards the man I'm limerent for, but it's painful that this leads nowhere. There's chemistry...he knows it, from his body language and teasing...but it will never be more. I can't let it be more. I'm not welcome here now matter how much we respect each other, no matter how much we can relate to each other's past trauma, no matter how effortless it is to talk to each other.
It's not fair to my husband, no matter how much I can't trust him. It's not fair to my co-worker's wife, who is a lovely person. It's not fair to the co-worker I have limerance for. He's has no clue about my thoughts and this battle against myself in my head. He's a decent person and I won't diminish him down to an LO or refer to him as an object.
The only thing that's concrete is that there are too many livelihoods at stake and I can't let my problem ruin them. That's about the only motivation I have. If it ruins me, fine; but not them.
