I try to make sense of that part of the story: the gas pipe, the safeguard, the ban on talking about it that would trigger it.
What I notice in Silo is the way the story is told to the audience on several levels: what we see, what we donāt, and what weāre told and untold. What we see is often given as objective facts (silo 17 folks went out and died), while what weāre told are mostly assumptions from characters, more or less reliable. They say what they think is true, or what they guess. Solo in particular is mixing facts (his parents were looking for that pipe), with his own assumptions in episodes 9-10. Juliet understood that: it was not Solo that was meant to protect the vault, but the vault to protect him. That means not everything told in the story must be taken for granted, we must discern facts from assumptions when seeking truth.
What is sure is there was no killer gas in Silo 17 ever released, because there were survivors all along. We must assume Solo's parents succeed. He seems very confident in it and we know for a fact there is this pipe in level 14 (Lucas found it too on the map in hard drive #18, both silos have the same design).
There was no gas released in the airlock or in the open when the folks went out either. It wouldn't have killed all of them in open air if it was breathable. I must assume outside air is deadly to silo people. Given the state of the surface it's not that hard to believe. There is no sign of life at all.
What doesn't make any sense is killing people to prevent them from going outside... where they will die anyway. You don't prevent death with death. It's absurd, one time is enough. So by any logic, since the outside air is deadly, something is wrong with the idea of a killer gas. I think it comes from how things are told to the audience by characters. They assume it's meant to kill. Because they don't know much about their world to say the least. They don't know why, how could they?
So I think the most logical explanation should be that the threat and nature of the safeguard are misunderstood by the characters at this point of the story. They all assumed it's a deadly gas that would come out of the pipe. That's a gas for sure.
But I think it's a neurologic gas that disrupts brain activity and causes severe amnesia. It was mentioned before in the story as something existing, or a kind of legend. After a few hours the whole silo would be entirely touched from top to bottom and there would be no escape from it. Not for the huge majority of people anyway. Affecting the brains of an entire silo would disrupt a rebellion and a mass exit attempt. And save the people's lives at the price of ruining them.
I really think the political narrative of the silo, the rebellion described in the mayor's speech in the first season, is an explicit reference to such an event. Silo 18 obviously had a huge traumatic episode 150 years ago. In the aftermath, they were unable to make sense of it by themselves. Instead they adopted that unquestioned but rather weird narrative blaming the rebels and Salvador Quinn for "destroying their past". How could such a magical event happen by the doings of rebels?
Put it like this I think it makes sense. The safeguard is, as its name indicates, an āultima ratioā to keep people alive. That explains why the people of the Silo know so little about their past and their origins (plus that relic policy that removes every piece of information). They even admit it in this motto: āwe donāt know why weāre hereā.
Then there's the why and who, but I would like to know what you think first.
All that said, I think this Silo series is truly remarkable and unique for its depth as a science-fiction story. What a show. Weāre trapped with the characters in that grim world and we barely know more than them. It feels like a dead end for humanity. Of course it must come from the books (must read them now), but the TV show makes it more real and more disturbing between what things seems to be and what they truly are. I can find some flaws in season 2, but I say bravo to its creators and author. It's one of the best scifi story I have ever seen.

All credit and thanks to u/ahncall for writing the following. All of this as a comment to help inform people of the pros and cons of Eversense and I found it very informative and hopefully more people can see it.
"I'm an endo and one of the primary inserters in the country for Eversense. The best way to explain is that it's a totally different type of CGM, for better and worse. My general recommendation is that if you are happy with Libre or Dexcom, there's no reason to switch. But if you are having significant issues/frustrations with those sensors, then the Eversense is a truly different type of CGM.
Pros:
- Very unlikely to cause skin irritation. Even though it's in one place for the whole year (as one commenter pointed out), the adhesive is extremely gentle on the skin because it's not designed to be ultra sticky like the competition. (It only has to last 1 day). It actually can be peeled off and re-applied a few times.
- Very unlikely to have pressure lows. Huge benefit.
- Removability: if it accidentally falls off or if you don't want to wear it for a brief period, you can just take it off. This means more naked showers.
- Less skin trauma over time. With pump sites changing every 2-7 days and sensor sites changing every 7-15 days, the body develops a lot of scar tissue over time. This only is one procedure per year.
- No having to "meet" a new sensor and its unique personality every 10-15 days, and deal with each sensor's first day shenanigans. It will take about a week to settle in accuracy-wise, but once it's working it's the same sensor for the whole year.
- On-body vibratory alerts: some people like that they don't have to have a smartphone nearby to know if they are going high or low
- Potential for integration with automated insulin pumps: obviously this is also a downside until they actually have pump partners
- More likely to last the full wear period. Libre and Dexcom trial data shows about 20% failure rate to lasting the full wear period. Eversense trial data showed 97% lasting the full 365 days.
- Much less supplies and packaging waste. When traveling, all you need is a micro-usb charging cable and the adhesive pads (a stack of pads is essentially the size of a post-it note pad).
- You only have to deal with your hardware supply company/insurance/pharmacy once a year.
- The transmitter that is worn over the skin is quite a bit larger than its slimmed down competition.
- The transmitter has to be charged. It can fully charge in about 10-15 minutes every day (best done during a shower), but it's still a thing you have to do.
- 1/day calibration for the first 2 weeks, then 1/week calibration for the rest of the year. I think this is pretty reasonable, but I know many people who stopped using their meter altogether with newer competition.
- Requires a procedure, although it's pretty mild. Insertions take less than a minute, and removals take anywhere from <1 min to 10 minutes.
- 24 hour warmup time with no data, followed by a week period where the accuracy has to settle in.
- No Apple Watch watch face complication (aka a widget). There's a Watch app, but no glanceable widget.
- The app UI is not as elegant as the Libre or Dexcom
- It's not common at all, but sensors do fail on rare occasion, and when they do, they require a new procedure. (the company does pay for the replacement and cost of procedure)."

My ex recently messaged me asking me to meet up and it brought up some resentment I didnāt realize I was harboring. I know I should accept the past for what it is but Iām having a hard time reconciling.
We dated in our early 20s and during that time their mother was arrested on racketeering charges. They understandably did not handle this well. I tried the best I could to be there for them but at 21 I didnāt know much about life and much less about how to deal with the loss of a parent to jail.
It didnāt help that my partner didnāt believe in therapy because they believed the purpose of a romantic partner was to have someone to confide in. While I was happy to try and help them, it became overwhelming for me. Every single day my partner was expressing their deep pain with me and I didnāt know how to help. I made the mistake of seriously suggesting therapy to my partner but this only upset them even further. I ended up apologizing several times for hurting them by suggesting they seek professional help.
There were two things that seemed to make them feel better. The first was sex. They expected me to be ready for sex whenever they wanted. It didnāt matter if I wasnāt feeling it or tired, they said sex was their way of relieving stress and as their partner I needed to provide them with it. It got to the point where I would cry during sex because it felt so icky. Like sex wasnāt something we did to please each other or grow closer together, it was just for them to get stress relief.
The second was to constantly remind me of all my shortcomings and how Iām failing them as a partner. I say Iām tired from work? Iām being insensitive to the fact that they have to do manual labor and I donāt. Iām feeling stressed about something? I donāt know what stress is, my mom isnāt in jail. Feeling unseen? Imagine how it feels to have a partner who says no to sex.
Then each and every time I brought up one of those feelings I would end up apologizing a minimum of three times for making them feel their response feeling. It was so exhausting. Even my parents noticed a change in me and said I was putting too much effort into someone who wasnāt trying to help themselves.
Eventually we broke up but were still seeing each other. My ex kept wanting to get back together and make things exclusive. I repeatedly told them no but kept leading them on my staying in contact. My ex went through my phone and saw that I had also been seeing someone else. They rightfully freaked out on me and told me Iām abandoning them just like everyone else in their family.
I felt, and still feel, horrible for lying to them and betraying them. I did everything I could to try and make it up to them but we eventually decided it was best to break contact. That was about four years ago. Now they have recently contacted me again asking to meet up. I declined but then they started talking about the past and how I was such a peaceful and calm partner. I found myself telling them they were also a great partner and thatās when the resentment hit me.
Even after all these years I still felt like I was pretending like my feelings didnāt exist so I could make my ex feel good about themself. I want to look back on the relationship fondly like he does but truthfully I look back and see how much that relationship broke me down mentally and emotionally.
I want to be happy that I provided them with peace and a safe space in that moment but I feel so angry that I let myself be treated that way. I feel angry that I was too much of a coward to stop talking to them outright when we broke up. I hate that I gave my all to them but still became a cheater in the process. I hate that they even reached out to me to tell me how much Iāve helped them in life. While Iām happy to help my friends, I hate that I gave so much to someone who only took from me in return.
More than anything I hate that all this still has an effect on me. Iām literally in the process of accomplishing my dreams but I also canāt sleep because I donāt know why Iām so bothered by my ex reaching out. How can I come to terms with everything and truly move on?

I have 2 upper wisdom teeth - no bottom ones. The dentist told me they need to be removed as they'll just keep growing into my bottom gums as there's no teeth there to stop it (that is, no bottom wisdom teeth). Is this true?
Can I just keep filing down my wisdom teeth so they don't cut into my gums below? The dentist said no - but my Mum said her wisdom teeth are nubs from the filing (her top wisdom teeth came out way before her bottom so the dentist just filed them down).

So I LOVE to read, which is one of the reasons I wanted to become an ELA teacher. I have an education degree but itās in elementary, and I didnāt minor in English but took a few electives. I love teaching ELA at the elementary level and want to focus on just that subject so thatās why Iām switching to secondary. I just donāt read very fast and got through only 26 books last year, but feel like most English teachers read more. I feel like I canāt recommend books to others because I havenāt read enough classics.
