Ok hear me out my idea for a project is to make a rudimentary diaphragm cell with an LDPE membrane. If I put all of the povidone iodine at the cathode, I'm hoping that some of the elemental iodine initially present will be reduced and some of the I- ions will diffuse to the anode. I thought that maybe I could purify it out that way, much like the electroplating of metals. Would this work or is this idea as stupid as it sounds?

Misconceptions about Kick Start in FI I saw an youtube video regarding how kick start cannot be used in an Fuel Injection Systems.
I am an Electronics engineer with 4 years of Formula SAE experience in college and have been riding bikes for more than 10 years. Also as a Firmware developer I have good idea about sensors and electronics subsystems.
This video uses a lot of vague claims regarding voltage, current and sensor without any proper understanding of how these things work.
Here are a few concepts before we dive in.
  1. The vehicle is powered by a 12 V battery.
  2. When your engine is not running the ECU, other electronic components, head lights etc consume power from this battery.
  3. When the engine starts running, the engine moves the alternator, it start generating AC current, and this ac current is then converted to DC current, which is used to recharge the battery and also power the electronic subsystem. You can also test this out if you have an old RE bike which had ammeter. When Engine is not running and the headlights are on the ammeter gives a negative reading which means current is being drained out of the battery. When Engine starts running the ammeter gives a positive reading because the engine has started recharging the battery.
  4. Almost all the electronic components run on 5V DC. And most of the sensors work on very low currents. This 5 V supply is generated from the 12 V battery using a DC DC converter(Buck Converter).
  5. The electric start runs the starter motor which moves the crankshaft to start the engine. The starter motor runs on 12 V DC.
  6. Kick start does the need the starter motor. It can manually rotate the crankshaft and start the engine.
  7. The battery used in combustion vehicles is Lead Acid Battery which are significantly cheaper than Li ion but have a tendency to decipate energy even when kept is an idle state and generally have issues with battery health(see point 8 for battery health). Also a 12V battery does not mean it is exactly 12.00V. If you measure your batteries with a multimeter after a ride you will see a reading of around 13V. When you have a new battery and keep your bike idle overnight then the reading will be still higher than 12.5V.
  8. The battery health means charging rate discharging rate and charge retention capabilities of a battery. The battery health of lead acid batteries are generally degrades in and around 3 years of use.
Once your battery health is reduced your battery is not able to reach charged voltage of 13 V, when kept in idle it goes below 12V. This means you battery is not able to run the starter motor.
But what about the electronic system. I don't want to go to deep into DC DC converters but for around 11 -13V the DC DC converter gives out a output of 5 V. (Anyone interested any read up on Closed loop Buck Converters). But what it means is that battery is able to run electronics system even when battery is at 11 V but it is not able to run the starter motor.
What battery dead means is that the battery is at 0V. This happens when your battery is short circuited. Which happens rarely. I have faced this issue once in 10+ years of riding.
But the old batteries get discharged easily. This what causes your vehicle with old batteries to not start with a self start.This is where a kick start helps(When your battery is at around 11-12V). For all the advocates of bump start, there also the battery needs to at 11-12 V and you cannot bump start a vehicle with a dead battery.
Now why am I advocating for a kick start. Most of the older rider know to use a kick properly. It is easier for us to use a kick. But it is difficult to make a bump start a 200+ kg motorcycle.
Whenever your battery health is reduced, it is advised to change the battery. But we have to ride to mechanic shop or we are middle of trip and have to complete the trip or have busy week ahead where we need to use the bike and just cannot go to the mechanic immediately.
Regarding the weight increase. It is true. Removing that would reduce the weight. If you using a track bike then yes no need of a kick start. But in city bikes what difference does it make. A few kgs means nothing significant.
Regarding the price, do we have a transperant breakdown of which components cost how much provided by the bike manufacturers? It is an old tech, does not need any R n D and did the manufacturers start dropping the price of bikes after this was removed.
I really hate someone with half knowledge starts simplifying and then spread misconceptions. I am asking to remove the self start. It a convenient method and it is really helpful. But what is issue with kick start as a fail safe.
For anyone wondering if I am misleading you, please fact check each and every thing I said and I have mentioned a few experiments, which you can try out youself.
Sorry for making this an electronics lecture, but just wanted to clear a few misconceptions.

I spend most of my time using a multiplexer hip hopping between sessions and tabs, and ive always used `ctrl-b s` and `ctrl-b w` to do so. In zellij however, I have to do `ctrl-o w`, which is fine, but then I need to use the arrow keys? Not to mention, I don't seem to see a way to add the preview functionality tmux has when it scrolls through the sessions. This is my only hiccup so far and id appreciate any help, Thanks in advance
