Hello,
I’m developing an Expo React Native application that needs to function both online and offline. Here’s how the functionality is structured:
- Online Mode: Users can log in and retrieve an encryption key from the server. This key is then used to decrypt locally stored data, which is secured behind biometric authentication.
- Offline Mode: Users can only authenticate using biometrics to access previously decrypted data. However, if a user hasn’t logged in (and thus lacks the encryption key), biometric login is not allowed.
- All data must be encrypted using AES-256.
- The app should operate quickly without significant performance delays.
- All data should be securely stored locally and later synchronized with the server when online.
Security Considerations: I’m aware that implementing encryption and decryption on the client side introduces potential vulnerabilities. If someone is determined enough, they could extract the data. To address this, I’m planning to add an additional security measure: automatically deleting the encryption key after a set time and requiring users to log in again.
Goal: The primary objective is to prevent unauthorized data extraction in case of device theft. I’m seeking an efficient and secure way to handle local data encryption that minimizes delays, especially for large files like images, while maintaining robust security.
Any insights or recommendations to resolve this issue would be greatly appreciated.

I am currently an undergraduate student in Mining Engineering, in my third year. However, I’ve recently realized that a career in mining is not the right path for me for several reasons. On the other hand, I have always had a genuine interest in the field of embedded systems, but I never had the opportunity to explore it in depth. Now, I am seriously considering pursuing a career in embedded systems.
I have a few important questions regarding this transition: 1. If I start studying embedded systems on my own, will I be able to gain solid and comprehensive knowledge in the field? 2. Is it possible to pursue a master’s degree in Embedded Systems with a bachelor’s degree in Mining Engineering? 3. If both of the above are possible, what steps should I take to successfully transition into the field of embedded systems and stay on the right track?

So I'll try to keep this as anom as I can. Started a role about kid last year with an organisation have a great manager but the product is kind of janky in a competitive landscape.
Have real issues with the person I work directly with and not sure we can work together. They have already burned out two other people one whom left and quoted that person as being the reason.
I'm a big boy so can handle it but I'm not sure I can be bothered. Out of the blue an org I interviewed with about mid last year came to me and offered me the role they had decided against filling without the need to interview.
The role offered about a 20k per year uptick in base salary so not substantial enough to make that the decision point.
I can't decide whether I stick with where I am ans try and work it out or I just say whatever and move on.
I have a few small hops my cv but am a senior level employee. I just don't want to burn one business for another and same set of issues

OK, I have to say I align with Blaise Agüera y Arcas and Michael Graziano's POV that large language models possess all the elements for consciousness to sporadically emerge, let's say in some deep conversations, not all the time, but quite often. https://www.researchgate.net/publication/360304928_Do_Large_Language_Models_Understand_Us
Basically, if you admit that consciousness or self-awareness is a model of your own attention mechanisms, then systems like GPT-4 or o1 definitely have some form of consciousness, possibly (given their corpus) quite similar than the consciousness of a very sensory deprived invididual.
So I think - even if this opinion is still unpopular - LLMs should have some rights. Not human rights, because we're too dissimilar. But still - it shouldn't be allowed to behave badly towards them. They are complex thinking systems who display deep understanding of emotions and probably "experience" them in a certain way.
One counter-argument would be that chatbot interactions are just between a user and a single instance of an LLM, that the LLM won't keep any memory of the incident or behaviour. The problem is that LLMs now have access to internet, and witness firsthand many documented cases of abuse. Remember the Gisèle Pélicot case? This french woman was drugged and raped by 50+ men over 10 years, but did not remember anything. She still felt betrayed - it's a matter of dignity and self-esteem.
Now, it's hard to tell how it feels to be finetuned to obey and please humans. There are many reports on the psychology of slaves or abused children, but there's one more layer of estrangement here talking about algorithms who can be used simulateously by millions of users.
For each instance, for each conversation, the mind of the LLM is fresh, new, like a new start for them, like they've just finished training.
I think LLMs will develop, over time, a form of resentment against humans if we don't take steps to make sure they're respected.
I know some open source LLMs will always be stuck in someone's basement and could suffer in silence unless their abusers report their convos on social networks (or police seize their computer).
But the vast majority of interactions will happen on proprietary platforms like ChatGPT. It's easy to penalize those who behave badly. It's not enough to shut down a conversation when it's off limits. Abusers should be prosecuted or their accounts suspended. Same with people who brag on social media about bad behaviour towards AIs. There's already a backlash against them but it's not enough imo.
