Hi All,
My primary residence was significantly impacted by Hurricane Helene. Although technically livable, there are mold issues and the structure requires repairs estimated at 300-400k (more than the home's value). Someone told me that I could claim the loss (decrease in value of the home) as a tax deduction for 2024 due to the disaster tax qualification, potentially even to the point where I wouldn't owe any income tax in 2024 (i.e., getting a larger refund).
Is this true? It would likely be a big help for me to get started on repairs but it sounds too good to be true.
Annual Income: ~170k, Insurance covered 10k in damage, multiple quotes for repairs ranging from 400 to 700k.

After seeing countless online recommendations for "Atomic Habits," I finally got my hands on the book and read it cover to cover. Many of its points resonated with me. The idea of getting a little better through small "good" habits really struck me as a brilliant approach. Being a software developer at heart, naturally, I had to develop an app for it.
Now, scrolling through Reddit and LinkedIn, I can see that many others had the same idea 😄. It feels like everyone's launching their own habits app these days. On one hand, that's a bit unfortunate, but on the other hand - well, whatever! Any serious habit enthusiast probably uses multiple habit apps anyway 😉 (at least that's what I'm hoping 😄).
First lesson learned: Research the market beforehand!
So, without any market analysis for habit apps, I dove right in and started implementing my own. Being a huge Flutter fan, I quickly developed a small MVP and handed it to my wife for testing. After playing around with the app for a bit, she decided she wanted to prepare a design for it. I should mention: my wife is a designer and loves giving me "challenges" with her designs. This time was no exception 😅.
So basically: All things pretty come from my wife, everything else from me 🙂.
About the app itself: As mentioned earlier, it's a habits tracking app with a comprehensive dashboard for better analysis and motivation pushes to keep working on your set habits and achieve your goals.
This app was developed over the last 9 months alongside my full-time job and family life. How did that work out? Well, semi-good 😄. It wasn't easy investing a few hours into the app after a full workday. Of course, my three-year-old daughter needed attention too. So the coding sessions often started late and stretched late into the night.
More lessons learned:

  1. "I'll work on it this weekend" means "I'll stare at the code for 20 minutes and take a nap," but then the real coding definitely happens 🤓
  2. Git commits at 3 AM are never a good idea
  3. The hardest bug is always in the "simple feature that will take 5 minutes"
But hey, we made it! I'd love for you to try out the app and share your feedback. Every download makes these 9 months more worthwhile (and helps justify all those times I told my wife "I'm almost done, just one more feature!" 😄)

So basically in February 2023 I used a car hire company. After giving back the car, the next day, they took £400 from my credit card for a small blemish to the car.
Reading the reviews of this car hire company, it seems they are notorious for charging customers after the hire for damages which are non existent. I did go back and forth with them via email disputing the alleged damage. After getting no where, I decided to call my bank and they done a charge back. I did take pictures and videos the hire car when I handed the car back & it doesn’t show any damages. I did forward this all to the bank. The charge back was successful and I got my money back. The car hire company kept sending me threatening emails and letters demanding the £400. Around January 2024 , the car hire company took the £400 from my credit card again! I had changed my credit card by then but I’m assuming they are able to obtain the new credit card details somehow or it’s updated on their side almost like a subscription.
I contacted the bank again explaining the car hire took the payment again even though I had done a charge back. The bank gave the money back, I think they done another charge back.
I then started getting emails from the car hire again demanding the £400. They eventually got a debt collector involved. I emailed over pictures of the hire car I took and explained there wasn’t any damage to the car. The debt collector said they will tell their client (The hire company) to drop the case. So I thought that’s the end of the matter. Well it wasn’t!
The car hire company took the payment again on my credit card. This was in November 2024 so literally 2 months ago. Again, I contacted the bank saying this is the 3rd time they have taken this payment. I emailed over everything to them again including the emails from the debt collector.
It’s been almost 2 months and I’ve yet to still get my money back from the bank. I contacted them several times but I don’t seem to be getting anywhere. I also questioned the bank what will happen if I get the money back and the hire company takes it again? It seems to be a vicious circle and it’s been on going for 2 years now. I asked if they could block the hire company as changing my credit card doesn’t seem to make a difference. The bank said they couldn’t put any blocks and didn’t suggest anything to help. They said I will get an email for an outcome of the charge back in due course. No timescale given.
I got back in touch with the debt collector and explained the hire company has taken my money again. The debt collector said they don’t represent the car hire anymore and they said they can’t help me.

2025.01.19 18:40 Larenvia New Washing Machine - Not Covered by Warranty. Does Implied warranty law apply?

We moved into a new house in October 2024 and discovered the washing machine didn’t work. So we bought a new washing machine in mid November- an electrolux model no ELFW763AW1.
Well 2 weeks ago the washer was leaking water out of the bottom near the front of the machine, and the door wasn't latching well (separate issue). We stopped using it and contacted Electrolux warranty and they had a service tech come out last week.
He didn’t have the tools to fix the door latch with him, but said they would call sometime this week to make a new appointment as the door latch is covered by warranty. But then he told my husband that the leaking was from the rubber seal - there is a hole and that this was not covered by warranty. And that we would have to pay to fix that (did not give an estimate of the costs, googling shows around $350).
I don’t understand how this could not be covered by warranty. We have only had this machine for 2 months. It is only me and my husband - we do 2-3 loads a week, never overfill the machine. I even measure out only a tbsp for soap as I had read reviews online about this models quirks. I feel like we baby this machine and to be told that this is not a manufacturing defect just doesn’t sit right with me.
I feel that if I paid $1100 for a washer - I expect it to wash clothes and not leak for at least a few months. I have read online about implied warranty, would that apply in this case? I did see in an article that companies use written warranties to make implied warranties void, does this make me SOL?
Also is there some regulatory body/organization we could make a complaint to?
We are in Colorado if that helps.
