Speaking as an immigrant who came here as a child and who truly appreciates so much about this country and its people:
The citizens here rightfully recognize that their system is sucking them dry for profit, but on a whole, the surface-level comforts their lifestyles affords keeps them complacent and distracted.
At this point, I think they'd need to suffer deprivation like I saw back in my native country before they realized the type of fight they need to put up.
It's such a shame.

My primary residence was significantly impacted by Hurricane Helene. Although technically livable, there are mold issues and the structure requires repairs estimated at 300-400k (more than the home's value). Someone told me that I could claim the loss (decrease in value of the home) as a tax deduction for 2024 due to the disaster tax qualification, potentially even to the point where I wouldn't owe any income tax in 2024 (i.e., getting a larger refund).
Is this true? It would likely be a big help for me to get started on repairs but it sounds too good to be true.
Annual Income: ~170k, Insurance covered 10k in damage, multiple quotes for repairs ranging from 400 to 700k.
