I finally managed to see this a couple of days ago. Of course it's generally had a good reaction and if you really liked it, more power to you. But I can also see online there's been an edge of disappointment too and this was sadly my experience. Im a fan of Eggers and am very on board with slow, brooding horror, so I was very excited for it but it just left me weirdly cold. I'm having a little trouble working out why it didn't land for me.
Now the start of the movie was 10/10. The build up to the castle and Nicholas Hoult's visit there was everything I wanted the movie to be and more. Unfortunately most of what followed felt really flat.
I think part of the issue is the movie was overlong and in need of more to grab onto. Of course this is never going to be a fast paced action, but I think the plot was one that would benefit from a little extra. The obvious thing to develop would be what happens with Dafoe, the doctor etc. Their part in the story was uncovering a mystery but it was very follow the numbers and could maybe have been given more layers with a couple of twists and turns. Some false leads or a weird Victorian science experiment.
The main thing though is I just felt very mixed about the primary conflict - Orlok and LRD, and this is what I'm having trouble trying to process. If I put on my amateur movie critic hat, I think the film is partially about lust vs. love, and also partially about women's repression in the 1800's, and tries to mix these together. LRD is quite a lustful woman but society represses and looks down on this. She loves her husband, but he does not satisfy her - the first scene between them she is asking him to have sex with her and he turns her down because he's late for work. Orlok, I think, personifies her desire for passion, and in being so revulsive I think also represents visually how society at the time put such a taboo on a woman's need for passion.
All of that makes sense to me and is fine in the metaphorical sense of movies. Where it's falling down for me is we are also given these things as literal events within the world of the movie. To be good, it needs to work fully on both levels. Now, LRD found Orlok accidentally and seems to have them been possessed by him. A lot of her pull to him is explained by this, but I could never get away from the sense that on some level LRD, on her own terms, kinda wanted to bed Orlok. That feeling is needed for the symbolical half of the movie to come together, but in the moment I just... no! Have you seen him š
? Her encounter with Orlok at the climax is played as a sacrifice but she really seems into it as well, like both things are true. So I'm left intrigued by the idea of all this, but revulsed at the same time to the point where I just don't get or particularly like LRD's character - what is wrong with you??
I guess this is where something like the Oldman version of Dracula maybe has a little more. It can still get away with exploring women's repression, but in the literal sense him having a kinda glamour that makes him attractive in the moment makes it easier to get on board with the actual mechanics of what's happening (not to mentioned the background of them being soulmates across time, but that's a whole other thing).
I'd love to hear other people's thoughts on this. Am I being unfair?

Hi everyone, I'm interesting in trekking EBC +/- Gokyo Lakes this April and wanted to hear about other people's experience with different trekking groups/tour companies. I've been looking at G Adventures and Intrepid, but also at local companies like Green Valley Nepal, Nepal Hiking Team, Nepal Eco Adventures, and Mountain Monarch. I'm looking for a company that is dedicated to the safety of the group, is well organized, knows the area well, and I am also hoping for a group that would have other people around the ages of 20-35 (although the whole group doesn't have to be around those ages). Please share your experiences with any of these companies or provide experiences with any other companies you might have used that fit these criteria!

Hi, I was apart of this group a while ago and i found great help in it as i donāt feel very understood by the people in my life. Iām back and seeking advice! Iāve been out of an abusive relationship for just over a year now. To paint a picture (TW): Me (F) and my now ex-partner also (F) had an extremely intense relationship at a really young age which was basically a year of me being traumatised and abused over and over again. Iāve been in therapy for over a year while i was in and out of the relationship and I have felt some improvement. However, i am still so angry. The situation at hand is that i live in a small area where everyone knows everyone. When i finally left the relationship for good I had to sever a lot of friendships that were associated with my ex as i was diagnosed with PTSD and the friendships were too much of a reminder. I am still very very young so parties are still quite common and 90% of the ones i am invited to, so is my ex. Now everytime this happens i become so frustrated because instead of being excited and looking forward to a party (which is what i used to be like) I am terrified at the thought of her showing up. It may sound immature but i really want to go to these types of things but my PTSD has been preventing that. I donāt think exposure therapy works for me as Iāve tried and each time I see this person in passing i feel sick to my stomach for weeks afterwards and it seems to get worse each time. Iām really angry that Iām left with this turmoil and im the one whoās lost the relationships i once had and im the one who has to second guess everything. I struggle to walk through my town in fear of seeing her. I donāt know how to cope with this and iām at a loss. How do I move on from the anger and sadness of all these friendships iāve lost? I honestly just wish i wasnāt invited so going wasnāt even an option. i know i would love to go!! but the risk factor feels too high and the fact that i have to think about these things makes me so depressed. Anyway, sorry i think this is all over the place but I hope someone can either read this and feel less alone or understand.

 | I've steadily been supplementing my on-body EDC with a few dedicated instruments for those times where you need a tool you can really beat on and either be certain that it'll survive the onslaught or if it breaks, it doesn't sting. Multitools are great and I'm not going to part with mine in favour of a complete system of smaller tools that I can shove in my pockets. But I've found myself quite happy supplementing with these small items in a pocket organiser to either compliment the rest of my EDC's features or to have a specific tool for the heavier work.  | Hi everyone, I was looking at buying a costume for the sake of saving time and giving me more time to work on armour. Looking at the chart and my measurements, what size do you think would be best? The website is DokiDoki. I'm being cautious because I know Chinese sizes are tiny compared to Western sizes. My interpretation is to get a size Small but with my hips only being 0.5cm smaller than the Small measurement I'm worried and thinking I should go for the Medium? But then the Bust and Waist measurement of the garment is going to be too big compared to my own measurements? My mom had it, and unfortunately, my brother and I inherited it. Sadly, Iāve gotten the worst of it. I havenāt seen a nephrologist since high school due to my extreme health anxiety, but Iāve recently been dealing with high blood pressure and have been put back on 10mg of lisinopril. While itās helped a little, my blood pressure is still high. Three days ago, I woke up to bloody urine. I went to the ER, and they tested my urine (no infection), but didnāt check my blood. They did a CT scan and found kidney stones in my kidneys, but none were obstructing anything. The doctors said itās likely related to my PCKD, but offered no other answers. Yesterday, my urine was normal, but today itās bloody again, along with lower back pain and left upper side pain. Iām in the process of scheduling an appointment with a nephrologist for Tuesday, but Iām not sure how long the wait will be or if they'll accept my state insurance (USA). Iām not having any pain when I urinate, but this is all new to me, and Iām really scared. Has anyone gone through something similar? 6 months ago I took a chance and posted my entire toolkit of templates and guidance, etc for ISO 27001:2022 over on my website -> https://www.iseoblue.com/27001-getting-started
It's all free. No charge or payment cards, etc.
Since then I have taken the leap to try to then sell online ISO 27001 training off the back off it (so, that's the catch when you sign up - an email with some courses that might help, that's it).
