Hello! I am having some troubles with my aquarium tank levels. I would like to have a betta, but I am just running into issues understanding what is going on. I'll admit that I am new to cycling (I am very thankful that I never ran into issues prior to this, but I am trying to do better so I can have a healthy, happy fish), so I am struggling to do this.
Just for awareness: I do not have any fish in the tank. I am doing a fishless cycle, because I know for a fact that I am not skilled enough to do a fish-in cycle.
Before, I would use distilled water, but I decided to use tap water since I read on some posts that distilled water isn't good for them. I am also living in the city now compared to before, so I don't know if the city water is making things a little harder.
Tank: Five Gallons; gravel, silk plants, silicone anemone, large skull hide, two leaf hammocks, filter & heater (I have never had luck with live plants before so I would prefer to not use live plants if possible, especially as I do not have a reputable place nearby to buy some).
Parameters (Measured by dipstick, so I am going off the colors):
Hardness - 300 Nitrate: 0 Nitrite: 0 CL2: 1.5 Total Alkalinity: 180-300 (The color appears to be similar to both readings, so I'll err more toward the 300) Carbonate: 180-300 (Same as above) pH: 8.4 Temp: 76 degrees (slowly getting up to a better one)
I have used both a water conditioner and an API quick start in the water. I know that the hardness, CL2, alkalinity, carbonate, and pH are way too high. I do have ammonia to add to the tank, but the test strips I have do not have ammonia testing so I am waiting on the ammonia test strips, apologies.
I am thankful for any help that people can give me, and I want to learn so that way then I do not have fish that have just survived and instead can thrive, as I know now that my bettas in the past have not had the best that they could have had.

Hello, my 3 year old lab began throwing up yesterday morning and has not stopped since. We took her to the ER last night and the bloodwork and X-rays came back totally normal. They gave her some fluids and gave her anti nausea medicine to last 24 hours. We are now 12 hours into the medicine and she is still throwing up.
She only will throw up if she gets up and moves (she is perfectly fine when on the couch or on the bed.) She didn’t start out with a cough but she now coughs before throwing up each time. We also don’t have any toys or other possible harmful things in our bedroom. We have tried to feed her boiled chicken and rice but she threw it up. We did 12 hours without any food and she is still throwing up white foam. She is unable to even keep water down. ER said they had no idea and that she should be okay after the anti nausea medicine but it has not worked.
Any recommendations or suggestions on what to do? We have an appointment tomorrow morning with her regular vet.
