Hi recruiters. I have a question about an experience I thought of recently with a recruiter. I just want to throw out there before anyone reads this that I’m not trying to insult anybody, or act immature, but I can understand if it comes off that way. I’m pretty young in my career so I’m unsure of these things. I also apologize for the ranting - I genuinely don’t know if that’s supposed to happen in communication with recruiters, and I wanted a recruiter’s POV on if this was normal, or “acceptable”.
Essentially, back in March 2024, I was a software engineer who was laid off from a pretty big company. As you can imagine, insanely stressful experience. Luckily, 7 months later, I was able to find new employment in my field - it’s just a contract role right now, but it’s something to hustle for and gain experience with.
Last July/August, there was a manager from there who reached out to me, expressing that a position opened up where I knew 3 people on the team, and he said he thought I’m “a perfect fit”. I meet the recruiter a few days after sending said manager my resume. The recruiter and I have introduce ourselves to one another - the recruiter said for my case it’s not like I had to be introduced to the company since I know the business, and this specific layoff wasn’t triggered by performance issues - it was a huge reorganization I unfortunately got caught up in. So the company knew I was at least alright at the job. He also told me it’s “very common” for laid off employees to come back to this specific company after being laid off. We set up the interview, I prepared, all communication was transparent. And on top of that, it was the best interview I ever had in my life. I got pretty much every question right - there were just a couple of simple things I could have done better, which I improved over time. Unfortunately, because the role eventually ended up in another manager’s position, said manager decided they were looking for someone more “senior level” than I was. That was the most pissed off I was during my whole job search.
That wasn’t even the worst of it. The email from the recruiter a week after read this:
“Hey ______, Thank you for your patience. The manager’s role is actually moving to another team and changing skillsets. I did want to pass along some of the feedback to help you in interviews moving forward. We can hop on a call this week and look at other opportunities. Overall, the interview feedback was quite positive. I did ask for some areas where you could make actionable change that would help your chances on future interviews. Interviewing is a skill and the feedback is very common but always good to keep in mind.

I responded back saying yes to getting on a call. I thought the recruiter and I would speak that week about potentially having something else. After all, I’m familiar with the company, and they know at this point I can pass an interview. Why wouldn’t they want to find a place for me? After not hearing back for a bit, I reached out another time 3 business days later to express interest. Still didn’t hear back, thought the third time would be the charm so I reached out after another 3 business days.
I gave up reaching out to the recruiter after 2 months.
I underestimated how traumatic (I don’t wanna make people pity me, so please don’t) this whole experience was going to be, especially in a market like this. I’d honestly hate to work there again but the reason I’m entertaining the thought of contacting this company again is to just keep my doors open for a job if I ever need it, especially since I’m on a contract right now. Although I really like the company I’m on contract with, and this company said they like me and the work I’m giving them, I’m hesitant to keep all my eggs in one basket. I know a few managers at the company that laid me off that I can ask if they or someone else managerial they know is looking for anyone with my skillset, but I really don’t want to deal with that experience again.
This started the part of my job search journey where I was mad at the world every single day. I was told straight up by a recruiter from the same company I got laid off from that he’d reach out to me within the week after what we all agreed was a good interview, with just a couple tiny areas that I could improve. And I was ghosted. I just wanna know why, you know? The recruiter has his own family to provide for, you’d just think there’d be more empathy if he was the one trying to find a job to provide for his family. Why would a recruiter who straight up said “we’re interested in you, we want you to work with us, I’ll reach out this week”… end up never reaching out again?
How often does this ghosting after something that seems like a successful interview happen? Is there any excuse for this behavior? If I ever end up communicating with this person again, should I expect an apology?

I interviewed on 11th dec for B1/B2 visa in Toronto and haven't received any status update since. The ceac website shows approved and hasn't moved since 11th Dec.
What can I do in this case? My canada work permit and visa is expiring in 15 days and I am freaking out.

I saw an older coworker post on FB about an estate sale they were having for a family member who was going into long term care. They were downsizing and selling off a lot of property, washers, fridges, farm equipment, and a few cars. They had a 2018 Camry and 2022 Civic- both had mileage on the higher end but were priced low, $4000 and $6000 respectively.
I have an 2001 Camry that runs perfectly fine, but have been keeping an eye out for an upgrade. After reaching out and some back and forth, she says that she won’t be back in town until the 30th, so I wouldn’t be able to view it until then, but that she requires a deposit to “hold” the car and if I don’t like it or want it, it’s completely refundable.
I’ve sold stuff on FB and marketplace before and know how annoying it can be. People jerk you around, leave you on read, and set up showings and ghost you. I thought it would be $50, maybe $100, MAX $200, just to confirm serious buyers.
She wanted $1000 deposit. A fourth of the cost of the Camry. After I asked what the deposit would be and she told me, she immediately started bombarding me with back to back messages, asking what form of payment I would be doing and when I would be sending it. As soon as I didn’t respond immediately, she started sending “????”. I told her I needed some time to think about it, and immediately reached out to my dad. He’s done private sales for all his own cars and all of mine and my siblings growing up. He said never ONCE has he had anyone ask for a deposit. He said the majority of the time, he’d let them know he would come cash in hand and if he liked it and inspected it, he’d buy it same day, and that was it. That coupled with how pushy she got after I asked what the deposit was immediately sent red flags for the both of us.
I ended up telling her that I would reach back out after she got back in town because 10+ days was a long time to wait to see the car if I was going to put that much down and that if it was still available then, we could revisit the offer. She immediately started spamming me with messages, saying she could have someone else take me to see it, and that the deposit was “completely refundable if you don’t like it” and “didn’t you see it in my post, it’s refundable.” At that point, I just let her know I was no longer interested and wished her good luck.
This feels like a scam, but I don’t know how she would benefit off of it.
