Hi! We live in Florida and have a lanai with a pool, and we have to pass thru the lanai to get to the backyard.
I am looking to install an entry sensor or door alarm on the door so that we are alerted if our child ever tried to enter the lanai alone. Since it is the only way to our yard and we have a dog, we do tend to go through this area a lot. So we are looking for something with a pass through feature so we can tell it not to alarm all the times we go thru.
Any recommendations?

2025.01.21 03:57 Duke825 Romanisation schemes that are almost perfect but not quite

So I'm curious, what are some romanisation schemes that you think are nearly perfect but just have this one or two minor thing that just really irks you? I personally have a few:
Korean Revised Romanisation
ㅓ ⟨eo⟩ and ㅡ ⟨eu⟩ are terrible. They look awful and they're unintuitive to literally everyone who speak a language that uses the Latin alphabet ever. McCune–Reischauer was onto something with ⟨ŏ⟩ and ⟨ŭ⟩, but the intricacy of the breve combined with how often they show up just makes the text look cluttered, so I'd say we go for something like ⟨ò⟩ and ⟨ù⟩ instead.
I also don't like ㅐ ⟨ae⟩. It looks bad and it doesn't really make sense. It's ㅏ plus ㅣ, so why not ⟨ai⟩?
Cantonese Yale romanisation
/yː/ should definately be ⟨ue⟩ instead of ⟨yu⟩. Don't think that one needs much explaination, really.
The first tone should also be consistently written with a grave accent, imo. For the uninitiated, here's what tones in Cantonese go like:

high-flat ⟨ā⟩, high-falling ⟨à⟩
mid-rising ⟨á⟩
mid-flat ⟨a⟩
low-falling ⟨àh⟩
low-rising ⟨áh⟩
low-flat ⟨ah⟩

Now you'll notice that this almost forms a perfect pattern: grave–acute–nothing for the high tones and the same thing for the low tones, just with an h behind... except for the sneaky macron at the beginning. Now while it is true that the first tone can be pronounced both ways depending on the speaker, the difference isn't phonemic so distinguishing them isn't really necessary. In fact I don't think any other Cantonese romanisation systems distinguishes them. It's just Yale. (Also the fourth tone can also be either falling or flat but that doesn't have two symbols.)
Thus, we merge the two to just the grave, restoring the symmetry: ⟨à á a àh áh ah⟩. Gorgeous.

I'm not yet financially ready to buy a house I don't think but my sister is telling me my understanding of how down payments works could be wrong so I'm no longer sure.
Is it that you need a down payment to get the house loan or you need a loan to pay the down payment? I'm pretty sure I need the down payment like 5% or something of the total cost in order to be approved for a loan to cover the remainder of the house cost but I genuinely don't know how home buying works. By my understanding I would need like $12,500 to get a loan for a $250,000 house. Is this correct or is my sister's POV correct or are we both way off?

Evicted my gallbladder on 1/9, I’m a huge spice person…and I just ate a cup of what was rated the 4th spiciest instant ramen in the world for 2024 😅
Is it actually a thing, not eating spicy food after gallbladder removal? I didn’t think to look it up until after I ate it lol. Should I be counting down the minutes until I spontaneously combust? Or are there people out there still enjoying a high spice level post-op? I’m hoping it’s an individual thing and that there’s hope for me!!

I’ve adopted a home theater setup with in wall speakers and subwoofer from Origin Acoustics. I’m trying to sort out how to hook them up to my existing Denon receiver. The receiver has the standard subwoofer pre out with rca plug. However, the subwoofer has a pair of speaker wires. What’s the best way to adapt the speaker wires to the subwoofer output from the receiver? I tried a cheap, small adapter but that didn’t work.

33, male, 6’, 165lbs, non-smoker, half German/Mexican, Los Angeles.
On January 11th I had a sore throat and was diagnosed with viral pharyngitis. On January 18th I went back in because I still wasn’t feeling 100% well. They diagnosed me with a “reactive airway.” So, the sore throat was mostly gone, but when I tried to breathe in deep, I would cough. I had a bit of congestion.
They put me on a nebulizer, a steroid. They prescribed me cetirizine and benzonatate. I feel pretty much ok at this moment. The PA-C explained to me that my immune system was still in fight mode because of the virus, if II recall correctly.
Am I still contagious with viral pharyngitis? Is a “reactive airway” contagious?

So, 4 days ago I hit the front of my head against a wall so hard that the wall broke. It happened while I was in a pretty bad mental state (borderline personality split) and I didn't notice anything immediately due to being in shock mentally. Over the past couple days I've been experiencing pain that fluctuates between the front of my head, and the back that is now accompanied by an itchy feeling. The first 2 days it felt like my right pupil was bigger than my left, but I didn't really check until today and they're the same size now.
I've been leaning my head to the right while standing still, and my whole body has been leaning to the right while I'm driving. My sibling told me that when I talk, I ramble and lose topic easily. I'm also completely zoning out during conversations. Whenever I do anything laborious, my whole body feels like it's buzzing and sometimes I start shaking. But I have not thrown up or passed out. I've been driving to and from work every day and working 8 hour shifts.
I know, with the possibility of having a concussion I should refrain from what I have been doing, but I thought it would go away on it's own, but it just feels like it's getting worse.
Please help, I'm scared at this point. I just want the pain to stop.
