I'm a student at Yale. I've been spending some time on this sub to help my younger sister apply to college and have noticed a bizarre quirk. Schools like UChicago are, by all means, considered peers to Yale—if not just a tier below HYPSM. On this sub, however, people seem to care about the fact that it "games the rankings." What is it with this?
UChicago doesn't derive its prestige from its US News Rankings. It's always been considered a top school. But even if it did, ALL Prestige is fake. The "Ivy League" is a sports league. That's fake prestige inherently--but good marketing and elite echo chambers have meant it manifests in the real world. These schools are built on Colonial Plunder (just see where Yale gets its name from), slavery, and do CRAZY things every year. Harvard and Yale have the MOST sports teams in the world, including niche white-people country club sports that only a category of people can play. Recruiting for these sports, outside of legacy, outright donations, and sometimes even bribery---is the backdoor to these schools. This "lowers yield", while also being incredibly morally flawed.
Yet, you only seem to have an issue with UChicago "gaming the rankings" by accepting more people ED? Literally, every school that offers ED is playing that game! Why do UChicago/Northwestern do it in a larger volume? Because they started late! UChicago literally did not give a sh*t about USNews and other perception games until 2010--it wasn't even on the common app. It was still considered one of the best schools in the world (literally since before World War 2). They started playing this game recently and are, therefore, doing it more to catch up. If anything, you should be giving them credit for not being built on those foundations.
What's my point? Don't let your perception of a school be clouded by the ONE arbitrary metric you've chosen to care about. All these schools have done/regularly do things that are morally flawed and dishonest. Columbia, Penn, and many more have been caught in complete scandals related to 'gaming the rankings'.
Schools like UChicago are amongst the best in the world. They have the fourth-most Nobel Prize winners, literally an UNMATCHED repository of Humanities/Social Sciences resources, and are a top target for Investment Banking/Management Consulting. Less than a handful of schools can match UChicago. You guys are not woke for identifying that they want to lower yield; cut them some slack.

I’ve always wanted a full beard but genetics have limited me to an average stache and patchy/thinness across chin & cheeks. Search up Jack Harlow - now picture that without as much cheek fuzz.
I’m 28 and curious to hear if anyone’s situation improved or declined around 30. Friend of mine couldn’t grow one til 30 and now looks like Dumbledore. Another had a full beard by 16.
