I was reading an article in which depression is cited as a state of "extreme emotional distress", which leads to my question: How are people suffering from that kind of distress described, as distressed or distraught? The dictionaries define distressed as "extremely worried or in a state of... Hey, I'd like to express the character's scream with an onomatopoeia after he had stubbed himself painfully in the head. What is the most common type of onomatopoeia to use in this situation? Or is it completely up to me to choose? 1) Try as he might, he couldn't put up with the pain. 2) However hard he (might have) tried, he couldn't put up with the pain. 3) Much as he tried, he couldn't put up with the pain. I wonder if these phrases or clauses have idiomatic forms and are used only with the verb "try". I might say "I have a pain in my left/right eye". Isn't it unusual to have a pain in both eyes? If they are both painful, I would say it differently. Otherwise, it rather depends on the type of pain. "I have a pain in my ....." may often be expressed as "My .....hurts" My skin is sore. (1) I’m suffering a back pain. = I’m experiencing a back pain. (2) The country is suffering an economic decline. = The country is experiencing an economic decline. However, when we add 'from' after 'suffer', it is used to introduce the very reason why we suffer. The object of 'suffer' is invisible, but it’s still 'pain' or something like ... The continuous present is strange and suggests that you have wished this headache on yourself and are complicit in the pain it is causing you. Some old people - I'm thinking of Proust's Aunt Léonie , in particular - have days for being ill, and on those days they say things like 'I'm having a headache' to explain their refusal to join in ordinary social activity. Secondly, discomfort, or even incipient nausea, is not as bad as actual pain and feeling terrible. The fact that no stronger term than 'stuffed' has been offered rather suggests there is none that specifies these worse symptoms along with fullness. After all, there does not always have to be a term to meet a particular combination of meanings. (We also say "I'm sorry" when we do feel remorse.) In this case, "I'm sorry to be a pain" means "I regret that I'm causing extra work" - even though I'm entitled to whatever it is I'm asking for. We're not remorseful that we made the request, but we do regret that it's putting someone to extra trouble. strong chest-pain (not strong-chest pain) lowest room-temperature (not lowest-room temperature) ice-cream sandwich (not ice cream-sandwich) I might well hyphenate them in isolation. I would certainly hyphenate "stomach-ache". If someone stabs you in the neck, you might have throat pain. If you have thyroid tumor, you might have throat pain. If a mosquito bites you on the adam's apple, you might have throat pain. A sore throat is a pain caused by inflamed tissues in the back of your mouth from an infection or sinus drainage.

I 18F have had a really bad stinging pain on a small area of my face for the last couple days. I try to put lotion on it, I made sure to really wash my face well, and I even tried Vaseline but the stinging won’t go away. Google hasn’t been very helpful, and I don’t want to go to a doctor for this, however it has been really bothering me. There is no red mark or anything, no visual difference at all. Does anyone know what it could be, and if I should be worried?

I found this (formerly) beautiful plant in the garbage at work, and thought I was saving it but I think I instead doomed it. I wasn't thinking about things and put it in my car for safety. I ended up having to stay later than usual at work, and so the plant sat in my car for at least 3 hours. It is well below freezing. It's gone totally limp and it makes me so sad to look at. The stem seems strong still and theres plenty of green, should I prune and how much? Please tell me there's a way to save this plant :(
