2025.01.22 19:54 CynA23 Review of 'And Break the Pretty Kings'
And Break the Pretty Kings was, unfortunately, a challenging read. I wanted to like the book but struggled to keep the story straight as I read along. And, if youâre wondering if it was the time travel element that was confusing, you would be wrong. In fact, that was both the most interesting and the easiest part of the story to understand.
Lacking Characterization I wish I could have loved this book, but I struggled greatly with the characterization.
My biggest hindrance with And Break the Pretty Kings was the multiple names used for the characters. The characters here have multiple nicknames, all of which seem to be terms of endearment in Jeongâs native language. It would have been fine if it was just one nickname for one character, but that wasnât the case.
This took me out of the story repeatedly as I was forced to navigate the context clues to see who was talking to whom to understand the storyâs direction. It was hard to follow and keep track of who was who.
Iâm not one to annotate a book, but this is one I probably should have.
My other biggest issue with the novel was Mirae.
Disconnected MC Considering that so much happens in the story with Mirae, you would expect some character development from her. Mirae gets into these situations where she has to reevaluate how she will proceed. Time and time again, she continues to make the same mistakes. What can go wrong will go wrong because she doesnât think things through. She doesnât have all the facts, and she has no desire to get all the facts. She is very, very short-sighted, and she doesnât change from the beginning of the novel to the end of the novel.
That was very frustrating because I wanted some sort of character development from her. I wanted her to recognize that she was not making the wisest decisions and needed to reevaluate how she would proceed. I saw no character growth from her, and considering everything that goes wrong in the novel, there would be some sort of characterization or character growth, but thereâs none.
It also doesnât make sense considering her power as the high horomancer, which is to switch places with her future self or even her past self. She knows sheâs going to get into these situations. Yet, she doesnât do anything to try to get herself out of the situation.
Now I know the saying: to know the future is to be shocked by it by trying to prevent something. The common trope is that you inadvertently caused the event to happen. But in this case, half the time Mirae switches places with herself, she thinks about how she gets to that point, and then Mirae just completely ignores it, so when it does happen, sheâs like, oh no, how did I get here. That was so frustrating to read, making me very angry with her.
And Break the Pretty Kings also seems very unsure of itself. Another reviewer said it best that sheâs very non-committal to the author. My opinion on that is you have Mirae, who sees the future or sometimes goes into the past, but nothing is set in stone for this story. Which makes sense. The future is constantly changing depending on your decisions, and thatâs why the theory of the multiverse exists.
However, it goes beyond just the plot.
A lot of subtext will be a romance subplot to the story. You get flashes of it when Mirae switches places with herself. You get flashes of it in some of the character dynamics. However, nothing really comes from it, and as someone who doesnât read romance, if youâre going to have some sort of romantic supply, you have to develop it, and it wasnât developed at all. It was kind of mentioned here or there. Still, it wasnât fleshed out, and that, to me, just added fuel to the fire that the story was very unsure of itself and, as the other reviewer said, very non-committal.
Final Thoughts I really wanted to enjoy or even like And Break the Pretty Kings. Unfortunately, this was a novel that left me very confused. It left me detached, and ultimately, I struggled to connect to many facets of the novel.

I don't have autism at all, I have traits of the autism spectrum and I have a diagnosis of combined ADHD but I am more inclined to be inattentive.
I have fewer sensory problems, moderate social problems, and more severe cognitive problems.
I have trouble understanding and learning things, I am slower than others at learning, I don't understand theoretical concepts, I need a lot of visual and palpable things, concrete things, things that I can see, I don't have much imagination, it's very difficult to imagine something that I can't see or that I've never seen, I don't understand math, and I have a lot of difficulty with logic puzzles, I don't excel in languages, writing or reading, I don't excel in sports, I'm not interested in studying, I'm not interested in any complex subject.
My rigidity is that I am not open to learning new things, I do not accept opinions contrary to mine, I always defend my attitude blindly and do not listen to others, the most extreme rigidity is in the area of âââânot wanting to accept opinions contrary to mine, I do not change my beliefs, I am not willing to debate or question my beliefs, my beliefs and opinions are unpopular in the eyes of others but for me they are correct, I am also very rigid about my decision to have indefinitely disconnected from the educational system, I am 31 years old and I have not studied since I was 17 when I barely finished high school, it is something that I hate, I hate mental effort, I hate suffering doing something very heavy and that I do not want to do, I am interested only in my personal goal.

I FINDINGS: Cervical spine: Normal alignment with no dislocations or subluxations. Moderate disc degenerative changes at C4-5, C5-6 and C6-7 intervertebral discs with moderate anterior disc osteophyte formation. Ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament from C4 intervertebral disc up to C6 intervertebral disc causing marked narrowing of the anterior aspect of the spinal canal. Largest AP diameter of the osteophyte ligament measures 6 mm posterior to C5-6 intervertebral disc. Moderate to severe compression of the spinal cord from C4-5 intervertebral disc level up to C6-7 intervertebral disc level, most pronounced posterior to C5-6 intervertebral disc. Smallest AP diameter posterior to C5-6 intervertebral disc measures 4.6 mm with mild hyperintensity within the spinal cord suggestive of spinal cord edema. Predominantly left-sided spinal canal narrowing at C5-6 level with marked compression of the left side of the spinal cord with mild spinal cord edema also noted at this level marked compression also noted at C4-5 level with minimal spinal cord edema noted. No distinct disc protrusion.
The atlantodental interval is within normal limits. No vertebral body fractures. Normal marrow signal. No destructive bone lesions. No congenital segmentation anomalies. Paracervical and pre-cervical soft tissues are unremarkable. No paraspinal or epidural mass/collection. No spinal cord mass lesions or syringomyelia. No atrophy of the spinal cord distal to the compression in the cervical spine. Neck soft tissues are unremarkable. Visible intracranial compartments are normal. The Individual levels: Craniocervical Junction:No spinal cord compression or significant spinal stenosis. C2-C3:Mild left facet joint osteoarthritis with mild stenosis of the left neural foramen. No nerve compression in the neural foramina. C3-C4:Mild bilateral uncovertebral joint osteoarthritis with no significant stenosis of the neural foramina. No nerve compression. C4-C5:Moderate bilateral uncovertebral joint osteoarthritis was moderate narrowing of the neural foramina in bilaterally, but no distinct nerve compression. C5-C6:Marked right uncovertebral joint osteoarthritis with severe stenosis of the right neural foramen and compression of the exiting right C6 nerve. Moderate stenosis of the left neural foramen with no distinct compression of the exiting nerve. C6-C7:No significant right neural foraminal stenosis. Marked left uncovertebral joint osteoarthritis with moderate to severe narrowing of the left neural foramen and possible compression of the exiting left C7 nerve.
