Hello,
The Frontman prides himself on saying that the game is "fair", and brutally punishes people like the Doctor who starts getting an unfair advantage. But ensuring the games have an equal opportunity between contestants is a terrible metric for judging whether the games are truly fair or not. This is because most of the Squid Games are not competitive games, but rather are more survival-based where each individual contestant either passes or fails. It doesn't matter what happens to the other players: they could all win or they could all lose in theory. So in reality, the games aren't a competition between players, but rather is a competition of each player against the game itself. Thus, the true measure of fairness is judging whether the players individually have a reasonable chance to survive and claim the prize.
Ordinarily in a normal game show, it doesn't cost anything to lose, even if the chances of winning are extremely slim. Going back to Pascal's Wager in my previous post, even if the expected outcome was incredibly small it's still greater than zero, so you could theoretically keep playing over and over until you eventually win. In that sense, we don't mind if a game show on TV or Netflix is ludicrously unfair, because it is entertaining to see people constantly fail in hilarious (non-lethal) ways.
But in Squid Game, there are no replays. Losing has the added cost of taking your life, so if the odds are stacked against you (and assuming your life is worth a lot to you) then it is better to not even attempt to play in the first place (as I explained in the other post). Therefore, I argue that a game is truly fair if the probability of the mixed-strategy Nash Equilibrium is equal or greater than the probability of winning. I will explain what all these terms mean as I go along
Squid Games appear to be fair at first because there is a chance for each individual player to survive (and that chance is equal between each player). But just because a chance exists doesn't mean that the game is at all fair. Think back to the Bread and Lottery scene of S2: each lottery ticket has a chance of winning a million dollars, but since the probability is a staggering 1/292 million (and the recruiter only bought 100 of them), then you are pretty much guaranteed that not a single one of them is going to win.
But a lottery is purely based on random chance with no real strategy, unlike the games in Squid Game. So theoretically, players who choose better strategies will have a higher chance of winning than those who approach the game randomly or have a bad strategy. In this sense, the game could be considered fair if players smart enough to come up with an optimal strategy are rewarded with having a pretty high chance of success.
But what if strategy didn't make any difference? What if even the best possible strategy allowed within the rules of the game still had unwinnable odds of success (like the Bread and Lottery game)? This would objectively make the game unfair. Even though there is technically a chance people could win, the odds are so low that even the best possible players are usually going to lose (and therefore die).
In the mathematical discipline of Game Theory (not the YouTube channel), a Nash Equilibrium (named for the American mathematician John Nash) refers to the best possible strategy assuming that all players are playing optimally. In the game of Tic-Tac-Toe (which has no element of chance), the Nash Equilibrium always results in a draw. That is to say, the only way either player can win at Tic-Tac-Toe is if at least one player is not playing their optimal strategies.
Thus, the Nash Equilibrium doesn't guarantee you are going to win, but it just guarantees you are as close to winning as you can possibly be. Any unilateral change of strategy from the Nash Equilibrium will always give a worse result.
(BTW, it is a famous mathematical problem that the Nash Equilibrium of Chess is unknown. Even though chess has no element of chance, the number of possible moves in chess is so large it is impossible for any human or machine to account for all of them)
A pure strategy is where you always make the same play for any given game state. For example, let's say you are playing X's in Tic-Tac-Toe, and your strategy is to always play in the corner if O's plays in the middle. In this case, O's playing in the middle is the game state and your play is to put X in the corner. On the other hand, a mixed strategy where your plays have some element of randomness to them. For example, let's say if O's play in the middle then you will play the corner 75% of the time, but you will play on the side 25% of the time.
In the game of rock-paper-scissors, the mixed strategy Nash Equilibrium is to play either rock, paper or scissors 1/3 of the time (33.3% chance). This will guarantee you to win 1/3 of the time, and no unilateral change of strategy can get a higher chance of winning than this (assuming the other player is playing optimally).
Now let's say that Squid Game had a game of rock-paper-scissors, where if you lost even once then they would kill you. This would mean that the required chance of success in order to win the game is 100%. That is unreasonable expectation, because the mixed strategy Nash Equilibrium only guarantees 33% chance of success, thereby making this game objectively unfair. However, if they instead played a lot of games and only required you to win 1/3 of the time or more, then the game would be a lot more fair. Players using an optimal strategy would have a very high chance of winning, while players using a poor strategy would more likely lose.
Let's look back to the rock-paper-scissors game in the first episode of S2. After crunching the numbers on the "minus one" feature, then the mixed strategy Nash Equilibrium is slightly lower than normal rock-paper-scissors, giving about 31% chance of success. However, as counter-intuitive as it is, the Russian Roulette feature makes this game surprisingly fair: instead of killing you for losing, you are given a 5/6 chance of getting a pass. This means that your actual odds of losing each round are only 1/9 (or 11%). Since 11% is less than 31%, then this actually makes the game objectively fair.
You can actually see in the show they go several rounds of this game with nobody dying, until the Recruiter "gets bored" and switches to having five rounds in the gun. This changes the chance of losing to 5/9 (or 55%), which is now much higher than 31%, and therefore unfair. Really, if the recruiter actually cared about fairness, then he should have let them both go after nine rounds of nobody dying (since the odds of either losing was 1/9).

So it seems fairly accepted that the "Lumen is Listening" video showcased some things that were definitely more on the sinister side.
Interestingly, when talking about rewards, all the MDR innies except for Mark was shown getting a reward, but more than likely actually a punishment.
Dylan was shown getting new snacks, and having what looked to be a sugar rush. Could this be related to him getting a "treat" of seeing his kids/family but leading to a bad reaction?
Helly was shown pineapple bobbing, though in the trailer it was shown with her head underwater. Could this be an allusion to treatment her innie has already suffered (I'm flip-flopping between whether she is Helly or Helana)?
Irving was shown in the hall of mirror. Could this be something around coming to terms with his past selves (I do have a fondness of the theory that Irving has already been to the test floor and "reset")?
And then, Mark has no "punishment" shown, which is weird but also very on the nose in some respects.
Interested to hear other people's opinions on this. Apologies if this has already been discussed to death before!

Definitely the weak link in his Hall of Fame career in my opinion. Castle/Arose were probably the best on the album and I liked them better than Temporary and Somebody Save Me. Framed is probably my favorite even with the silly FRAAAMMED hook. Clearly a 3 am prequel or sequel that was SO out of place on this album. In your Head, Remind Me and Heat felt like they were cut from Recovery or MMLP2. For some context, I'm 41 and was lucky enough to be in high school and college during the SSLP through Encore era and I understand not everything was written for me and my personal preference like nowhere fast or like home. Makes me wonder with all the fantastic leaks recently and in the past how he thought this album was good enough but other stuff wasn't
