2025.01.22 22:02 Indigo0425 Suggest the most quirky, clever writing you’ve read

I have always preferred nonfiction but I have been dabbling into fiction lately and have really enjoyed these two books:

Both very different styles, but the writing was so unique and smart that I found them both being some of my favorite books ever. I did love the story in the one by Pargin as well as the writing, but for the Batuman book I didn’t even care about the story because I liked the stream-of-consciousness, funny-without-trying style so much. Both are very psychological in different different ways.
It irks me when I find a book with an interesting story and great potential but then find that pooflat writing completely ruins it (writing that feels like “and the he did this”, “and then she said this”). I’m looking for authors with great, clever writing that really stood out to you, bonus if the story is great too. Fiction or nonfiction. Thanks!

2025.01.22 22:02 Longjumping_Fee_5098 I wrote the prologue for a book I’m making. Thoughts?

This is the prologue for a book I'm writing. Thoughts? Do you want me to post the next chapter? Is it good?
PROLOGUE

I still remember that day: January 24, 1973. That was the day Irana came to camp. Feran and I were sitting on the stoep of the Captain’s tent with a truckload of swords and shields laid before us. We were to sharpen and clean all of the Captain’s armor and weapons as punishment for disobeying curfew the previous night. Keoni was taking care of his own weapons and had agreed to help us for a few euros. He had taken a good quarter of the swords, along with his own, to the main fire to sharpen them up. Feran’s slave had taken about half of the armor, which were fewer than the weapons, to the watering hole for cleaning. We probably had about half of the total weapons and armor, since Keoni and Feran’s slave were helping out, but it was still a lot. If Slane had been there, it would’ve made it much easier, but she had woken up with a cold that morning, and I wanted her to rest until she was better. We would have to suffice without her. The only means of cleaning was the small bucket of water that we had been given. Sharpening the weapons was equally challenging, as we only had a sharp rock and a scrap of steel to do it by. Fire would’ve made it much easier, but the only fire nearby was the Captain’s personal one, which was always lit in his tent, where we weren’t allowed. There were guards nearby to make sure we did as we were told and kept out of trouble. That included going into the Captain’s private tent. We sat on the stoep for hours, sharpening and cleaning until our hands were numb and our legs asleep. Once we had finished with the weapons, the sky started to darken and we were scared that we might not finish cleaning the armor until late, so we hurriedly scrubbed the shields and helmets, tossing them into the clean pile. When we were on our last row of helmets, we heard a shout from the main fire. It was Keoni. “Guys, it's the white van!” he called. We immediately got up and ran towards the edge of the encampment to the dust road, yelling something about a water break to the guards who had started to follow. There, we lined up next to the other boys, all wanting to catch a glimpse of the white van. It was a rare sight, meaning that the military had gotten some new boys. Whenever we saw the white van, it always held younger boys, so it never actually drove by us, turning instead to the right, where it would take the boys to Standard One. It was almost impossible for it to come to our camp and bring a boy our age. That had only happened once in the last 20 years, and most of us weren’t even that old. But the boys liked fresh meat. When boys from Standard Six moved up to Standard Seven, the bigger boys couldn’t make fun of them, because they had been trained all their lives, all the way from Standard One. We had too, but the boys wanted something easy. A new kid that was our age and knew nothing of what our whole lives were about sounded like an easy target to them. I wasn’t much of a bullier and neither was Feran. Keoni liked to play with them, but he wouldn’t do anything serious. But there were some that would, and on purpose too. There was a lot of hope for a new boy. Everybody wanted the white van to come up here, to Standard Seven. Even though Feran and I knew it wouldn’t, we all wanted to see the white van, the dust swirling like fog as it raced down the bumpy road. This time, however, it didn’t take its usual right turn. Instead, it continued up the road, moving toward us. The boys leaped in excitement, but Feran and I rolled our eyes, because it was obviously just taking the long way to avoid weather damage on the usual path to Standard One. Lately, there had been very strange weather, so there was no doubt something had blocked up the road back there. But as it drew nearer, we saw the silhouette through the translucent window. It was kind of short for an 18-20 year old like us, but not short enough to be a Standard One boy. Actually, we noticed it was quite a bit taller than some of the boys in Standard Seven as it drew even closer. The body shape was slender and thin, which wasn’t a good trait for men like us. The bigger boys cackled, for he was definitely a weak guy. Just then, when the van was right in front of us, it stopped. Everybody clapped or smiled in excitement, and even Feran and I couldn’t suppress a few grins. Just then, the Captain walked up to the crowd of boys at the road. “Path formation!” he snapped, and everybody quickly got into their spots on either side of the path, staring at the person on the other side with a blank expression. We weren’t allowed to get distracted by the Captain’s presence. Sometimes he would do tricks to try and get us to be distracted or to tap out of focus. Those exercises could be fun, and he tested our strength during those activities. This time, though, he was very serious and didn’t even check to see if we were still before briskly walking forward to the van. “Eyes on me!” he demanded, and we all turned our heads toward him, keeping the rest of our bodies completely still. “A special surprise for you all hides behind these doors. A new initiate. You will treat them with respect and integrity, or you will suffer the consequences. We all treat each other the same here and I do not want complaints. Follow that stupid golden thing that your mummies taught you. I’ll be watching.” He then walked away with confidence in every step, leaving us there to await the open of the white van’s doors. Feran and I exchanged a glance. We were excited to see the new boy, but something in the Captain’s speech had caught our attention. He had referred to the new boy as “they” and “them”. Was this person special? Did he need to be referred to as “they” and “them” for a reason? Maybe he was so powerful that the Captain couldn’t assume how to call him. I stifled a laugh and so did Feran. Powerful family heritages were so rare nowadays that people had begun to question if they were just myths. There was no way that the new boy was from one of those. How could he be so special?
We later discovered that the new initiate really was special, but not for that reason. Through all the thinking over the Captain’s speech, we never stopped to wonder if the reason they had been addressed in all-gender-friendly pronouns was because they really weren’t from our gender. Nobody stopped to think she was a girl until we saw her.

2025.01.22 22:02 qchto What's the oldest game you have play/completed in a Steam Deck?

What's the oldest game you have play/completed in a Steam Deck? Checking though my oldest backlog, I found myself going back decades. My last 50 hours gaming have been almost exclusively on Dark Sun: Shattered Lands*, and what an awesome experience it was on-the-go (I love tinkering with Steam Controller mappings)...
So having finished it, I'm looking for old games to play on this device, specially those that some may consider "impossible" due to controller mappings. Do you have recommendations? Looking forward to your replies!
*btw, feel free to look for "Deck Ready" Community Layout for this get if you plan to play it (in my experience works better at 600p, set up from the game launcher).

2025.01.22 22:02 PyroSpark Has there been a fix for having to actively turn-on every mod in BG3's ingame mod manager, yet?

Because I would love to simply play with just bg3 mod manager exe, and have the game respect that. Instead of having to make sure every individual mod is turned on, in-game.
It's getting tedious whenever I want to switch to different mods.

2025.01.22 22:02 Lonely_Pilgram_44 Fitness Test (why is it not available on the 46MM watch?)

What metric does the fitness test measure that can’t be measured with the Apex 46MM watch? I know it’s one of the cheaper watches for Coros but it seems to measure everything the other watches measure, so it seems odd that there is no “Fitness Tests” option. I’m tired of my fitness score dropping every time I do a long run (only reason I can think of for that is that I can now run Zone 2 at around 9:30/miles pace and back when I got the watch, I was closer to 11:00/miles pace to stay in Zone 2….so my guess is it’s still basing the score off that and saying I’m running too fast for that zone 🤷‍♂️).
