2025.01.23 07:05 I_aim_to_sneeze The Ddakji man gave the wrong odds during Russian roulette
He plays Russian roulette with Seong Gi-hun by putting one bullet in, but not spinning the cylinder. Once they take 2 turns each, he says “now your odds of survival are one in two.”
This is a classic misconception with bayes theorem, most popularly known as “the Monty hall problem.”
In the tv show “let’s make a deal,” they gave you three doors: two had a goat behind them, one had a new car. The contestant picks a door, then the host (Monty hall) would reveal a door with a goat behind it and ask the contestant if they wanted to switch their answer, or stay with their original choice. Many people think the odds are 50/50, but in reality switching will give you the right answer 2/3 of the time, since you had a 2/3 chance of getting it wrong when you made your original choice. Brooklyn 99 fans probably remember holt and Kevin arguing about this because they needed to BOOONE.
The Russian roulette game is the same in this instance. The odds of survival are locked in because the cylinder will not be spun with each new shot. Seong actually had a 5/6 chance of dying when he pulled that trigger, not 1/2, since the other 4 cylinders have already been eliminated as wrong choices. I wonder if this was just a simple mistake, or if the ddakji man knew this and was surprised when Seong survived.
