As my 2 year old boy sleeps on my lap, I was reminded of me and my wife's experience at a "baby friendly" hospital and wanted to share some advice.
Going into delivery we noticed that "baby friendly" or "baby first" was being advertised at our hospital, and we thought this was a good thing, obviously if they went to the trouble of getting certified and advertised it, it must be good, right?
Wrong. What it actually means is they are designing a birth experience around pushing the mother to breastfeed exclusively, quite literally putting the baby "first" before you or the mothers experience or requests.
For us, this meant nurses would repeat rehearsed lines about breastfeeding to us, insistent questions about our breastfeeding progress,and NO nursery was available to give the mother time to recover or sleep if needed.
We had a relatively benign if not odd experience with our baby friendly hospital, but after googling other mothers experiences, it seems we got off light because we had a relatively successful time feeding our son. Other parents have reported being emotionally shamed into breastfeeding even if they wanted to but struggled to breastfeed, high pressure counseling sessions about breastfeeding, and limiting/hiding/lying about formula if you can't breastfeed or do not want to (they are not supposed to do this, but it seems to be a common complaint).
That is all to say, these hospitals are not bad, for example, our experience was just odd, not terrible. Many don't have high pressure tactics that the horror stories imply, but it might worth being prepared for what they are.
Read up on the evaluation criteria that drives the certification, in particular criteria around interacting with the mother, and don't be afraid to advocate for your wife and baby.

Hi, I’m a Solar punker who created a new societal model.
Today, I’d like to share how I discovered a universal meaning of life that shaped this model and that I believe could be embraced by everyone.
When I first started designing my societal model, the goal seemed straightforward: to create a system where every resident could easily meet their basic needs.
At the time, this felt like the perfect foundation.
But everything changed after a life-altering conversation with my friend Ben. Here’s the story of how it happened:
Ben was a wiry, determined young man who had come to the city to carve out a better life.
We met on a dusty soccer pitch, where the city’s sprawling chaos gave way to moments of camaraderie.
Despite our different paths, we became close—bonding over long conversations and shared goals.
One afternoon, while catching our breath after a game, Ben told me about his younger brother.
He mentioned how his brother was about to sit for his final primary school exams—the gateway to high school.
Without hesitation, I wished his brother good luck, but his response left me stunned.
“Don’t wish him good luck,” he said matter-of-factly. “He’ll fail.”
“Why would you say that?” I asked, perplexed.
Ben sighed deeply, wiping his forehead.
“Because if he passes, it will only bring us more problems. We can’t afford high school, let alone college. The fees might be free, but uniforms, books, transport etc.—they all cost money. And if we can’t send him, the government will punish us for not taking advantage of free education. It’s better if he fails now and starts learning skills that can actually help us—farming, vocational skills, driving a bus etc.”
His words hit me like a punch to the gut.
At first, I thought it was cruel—evil, even—to deny a child the opportunity to learn and grow.
Education was supposed to be the great equalizer, wasn’t it?
I told Ben as much, careful to choose my words. “But what about the opportunity? Isn’t it worth the risk?”
Ben looked at me with a patience born of years of hardship.
“You know about the Hadza people, right? Hunter-gatherers. They don’t send their kids to school, but no one feels sorry for them. Instead, they’re celebrated. Why is it different for us?”
I didn’t have an answer.
That night, as usual, I wrestled with the harsh reality.
How can we live in a world where abundance existed, yet opportunities remained just out of reach for so many?
But this time, I also wrestled with another uncomfortable reality Ben had exposed.
If hunter-gatherer communities like the Hadza could meet their basic needs through their way of life, why should we should integrate them in a Solarpunk society?
And what about the uncontacted tribes? Or other communities around the world that live independently and sustainably, reaching old age with their current societies?
This plunged me into an early midlife crisis, prompting me to dive deep into philosophy, psychology, history, and more in search of a universal meaning of life that could resonate across diverse communities.
After years of exploration, I finally arrived at a conclusion: the meaning of life is to gain knowledge and contribute to human progress.
This realization came from observing how our cultures and lifestyles have been shaped by collective efforts to share knowledge and skills.
Consider this: maize originated in North America but has spread globally; tea began in China and is now enjoyed worldwide.
Modern medicine is the result of thousands of years of collaboration and shared discoveries.
Innovations like computers, cars and phones are products of countless contributions from people working together.
In essence, all societies have benefited from collective knowledge and the fruits of human progress.
So it follows, then, that every society inherently respects and depends on these principles because they are integral to our shared survival and growth.
Hence by highlighting examples of how a societies current tools and practices are already products of shared human ingenuity, we can approach communities and invite them to join a Solarpunk societal model whose aim is to allow it's residents to easily gain knowledge and help in human progress.
Of course, this meaning of life does come with challenges, but they can be addressed thoughtfully.
For instance, contributing to human progress can take many forms—indirectly, by raising responsible citizens and supporting community well-being, or directly, through innovation and research.
Another concern can be the potential loss of culture when integrating communities into a Solarpunk society.
However, we can design the society in a way that allows these unique cultures to flourish within the broader Solarpunk framework.
As for uncontacted tribes, once most of the world has become a Solarpunk society, they would have to be integrated too, since the tools they use to hunt, the medicine they use, the way their ancestors reached the locations they currently are in, is a result of our collective knowledge and human progress.
But the approach would be gradual and sensitive ensuring they are not exposed to diseases or mental trauma.
To end this post, I would like to say thank you for reading this, and I hope you find it valuable and insightful.

I’m currently in Cambodia, having been two weeks in Thailand. I was planning to go to Viet Nam after Tet (3.2.) but it seems that my body can’t handle the air pollution.
Air quality index shows that the Vietnamese cities near Cambodian border are much cleaner, specifically Tra Vinh which has the cleanest air in the whole country.
The question is: if I go there during Tet, how hard will it be to find food and accommodation? Any restaurants open in Tra Vinh, or just 7-Elevens and such?
