As part of my sophomore capstone project, am required to design and fabricate a project. Based on the material we have and the customers idea, I’ve decided to use 2x2x1/8” tube, that was donated to our program to construct the bulk of a weight lifting rack with a spotting bar.
We have a few hundred feet of this material, which is an ASTM a36 steel with an unknown SAE designation. The issue is that it was donated to us because for one reason or another, the producer rejected it due to not meeting an unspecified standard.
As far as I’m concerned, the seam weld could be defective, or the batch didn’t meet mechanical properties specified. We weren’t told why it was rejected or the batches mechanical properties.
The customer, who is an engineer has already approved me to use the material as between him, my professor, and me believe the design and material safety factor is already ridiculously high even taking into consideration the use rejected material.
I’ve done everything I can design wise to ensure the rack can support any amount of weight dropped on the structure (within reasonable human limits) and we are all confident in the design and material that I’ve specified.
I have no intention of doing NDT and DT besides VT along the welded seam of the tube. But I’ve become increasingly curious as to how one would go about testing material of this nature. I spoke with one professor, who said that in order to perform qualitative mechanical tests, multiple full metal tensile specimens would need to be taken from the side that contains the seam weld, and multiple transverse and longitudinal tensile specimens from each side of the tube and it would be impractical. We tossed around the idea of using hardness testing to get an approximation of the tensile capabilities.
I had the idea of using surface wave UT to inspect the entire 12ft weld span and each side of the tube, but reading everything in the tubular clause, and inspection clause relating to UT in D1.1 I couldn’t find anything about the use of surface wave UT to inspect.
I guess I’m just curious and after searching many forums I still have not found anything conducive about surface wave inspection of weldments, or tubular structures.

Looking for some guidance from the only reliable source I have to work with here. Recently totaled my ‘04 CR-V, saddest day of my life so far. Went out and instantly found a solid deal on an ‘06 for 3K with just over 200K miles on it that had some cosmetic damage but the interior was solid (still has the table even, weird flex I know). My question though is my 04’ had some wheels on it that still have quite a good amount of life left and I want to know if anyone has had any luck moving rims from and 04 over to an 06. I know that the 04 has 15 inch rims while the 06 is rocking 16 but the bolt pattern should be the same and both widths are 6” so in theory this should work correct? I’ve looked online and have seen people say that it will work but the people I talked to said that there’s no way to put the 15inch rims on the 06 since it has 16 inch rims on it. That makes zero sense to me personally, both cars have the OEM Rims so I’m not sure if I’m missing something or if this is just your average case of people talking out of their ass. Thanks in advance.

Demo: White male at rural-ish HS in MN with around 200 people in my class. Applying as econ major.
GPA: 4.0 UW UC GPA
Course Rigor: I have taken the hardest course rigor available at my school with 1 AP last year, 4 APs this year, and registered for 5 APs next year. I got a 4 on my APUSH test which is the only one I have taken.
Awards (Just DECA currently): 1st at districts in one category this year and 3rd in two others, also I got a 1370 on my PSAT so maybe National Merit commended?
ECs:
-DECA (3 years)- Qualified for state 3x and internationals 1x
-Barista Job (2 years)- I work 5-8 AM most days before school managing pretty much by myself and I want to go into detail about that on my apps
-Nonprofit Fellowship (1 year)- Less than 100 members selected worldwide with us doing projects to raise funds for communities in need (More to it than that I just don't wanna dox myself)
-NHS (1 year)- I'm a junior officer and will likely be a senior officer next year (probably something like treasurer)
