2025.01.24 22:53 FranDreschersLaugh Revising while drafting?
I wrote a "shitty first draft" of my novel last year.
(I actually wouldn't even call it a first draft. More like a "zero draft.")
Now, I am writing my "true first draft," and it's going much, much better. I'm pretty happy with the voice, characters, etc.
Here is what I have so far:
- A full outline of the major plot points
- Character sheets I'm confident in
- About 10K words written (a handful of chapters)
I keep noticing issues that make me feel like I need to stop and take a step back / revise before moving on.
For example:
- In one early scene in the novel, the MC is arguing with her partner. I really liked the scene but then I realized... "Wait a second, maybe they shouldn't be arguing this early. Like, I should build up to this argument instead. That makes more sense for their arc."
- ...So then I end up trying to go back and revise their arc and then re-write the scene based on that.
- Then, I'm happier with the scene/arc BUT I wonder: "Am I just going to change this again later anyway? Should I just be writing this through and going back for major developmental edits in the next draft?"
- But then I tell myself: "No, this was worth stopping to fix. It's better. It was worth the time!"
But the real problem is, I'm super early into my novel and I have a feeling LOTS of issues like this will crop up, where I'll feel uncertain about a scene/arc/etc.
So I keep going back and forth:
Should I just keep writing? OR should I revise this bit now since it has a BIG effect on the rest of the novel / how the following scenes will play out? Maybe I need a more fleshed out outline? ...Idkkkk!
TL;DR:
At what point do you stop and take a step back to revise and/or get more "big picture clarity" while drafting?
How do you discern the need to do that so that you produce a cleaner draft vs. the need to just keep writing and worry about the details stuff in later drafts?
I know everyone's process is different and unique. But I'm hoping to get some insight or knowledge that might help.
Also, I'm a published short story writer and write for a living as well (I work in advertising), so I'm not new to writing per se. I'm just trying to figure out what my best process is for writing a novel specifically.
Would love advice/insights from any authors here!

Yesterday my husband and I took our twin toddlers on an outing, it was an unusual spontaneous moment. My daughter ended up in a state where we felt the need to take her to the ER. I had my husband take our son back home. We live with my parents. When he dropped him off he didn’t tell my parents what was happening, I guess he assumed I had already texted my mom. Our daughter ended up being fine thankfully.
I did end up texting my mom from the waiting room and this is the response I get:
It would be nice to have heads up when dumping [son’s name]When we got home, my mom kept lecturing us that it interfered with her dinner plans. “It would be nice to get a head’s up!” Note she didn’t really ask if our daughter was ok.
In my dream last night I screamed in her face “IT WOULD HAVE BEEN NICE TO GET A HEADS UP ABOUT MY SPERM DONOR TOO!”
This morning I’m wrangling the kids trying to get them out the door to the play place we go to, having a helluva time as you do with toddlers. My mom gets involved and then continues to repeat last night’s lecture about “it would be nice to get a head’s up” and how it interfered with her dinner plans.
“Your father assumed that since you all went out that you’d be eating out so he didn’t make dinner!” I said “I don’t care Mom” in a stern way because I was already pissed off. She said something like “Don’t talk to me that way.”
I snapped. I got my face very close to hers, a favorite tactic of hers, and said “You keep lecturing me about ‘it would have been nice to get a head’s up,’ well it would have been nice to get a heads up about my SPERM DONOR before I found out from the INTERNET. It would have been nice to get a heads up from someone who theoretically loves me. That would have been nice.”
She was quiet for a second, holding in something while I was shouting. Then I went to pick up Tommy and she said “Well that was theoretically never supposed to happen.”
I scoffed and said “That’s WORSE Mom!! There are things I needed to know about, there’s Type 1 diabetes on his side of the family!” And some other things like “I should have known” or something, I don’t know, I was basically blacked out with rage by then. Left with the kids.
When the kids and I came home, she didn’t speak to me except to say she was going upstairs to lay down. There was never an apology, there never will be.
“That was never supposed to happen” = I’m not sorry I lied, I’m just sorry I got caught.
A few years ago I would have felt SO bad for yelling at her, now I feel great about yelling at her and terrible that I’m still stuck living with her.
I don’t know how this episode is gonna resolve. She’ll most likely go back to pretending nothing happened so she doesn’t have to face accountability. I’m not satisfied with that. We’ll see how it pans out.

I'm 18, recently I had a pinworm crawling in my anus and I took it out before it died (I heard that once a pinworm lays eggs, it dies). that was two weeks ago and I took medicine aswell. I've been feeling the sensation like there's a worm crawling in my butthole but it was a very light sensation as if I was gaslighting myself into thinking I still have pinworms. I've also been dealing with hemorrhoids the pas two weeks.
today I was inpecting and saw a very very thin and small clear worm(?) moving. I don't think it's mucus but it didn't look like the pinworm I saw two weeks ago.

My goal here has been to briefly get us up to speed on the two POVs for the heist of the Cycle Vase, which occurs across the first ~10% of the MS; flashbacks happen later on to fill in the backstory detailed in the first two paragraphs of the query.

Since his enslavement in a mine as a boy, Adu has striven to bring down the god-king, a tyrant to blame for Adu’s imprisonment and his mother’s death. After years of scheming alongside the friend he escaped with, and under the direction of a mysterious heretic, he leaps at a chance to expose the king’s power—manifested as stars in the eyes—as false. Adu need only steal from the king a religious idol called the Cycle Vase.
Nefri has long since lost the zeal that pervades her secretive cult. I got deferred from Georgetown back in December and now waitlisted from UNC 💀
I expected to be rejected/deferred from a lot of schools going into the application process just because of how competitive it is now but it’s really disheartening that both of the competitive schools I applied to EA didn’t want me, I’m so stressed about the ivies and other top schools now
Ik I can still be successful at a state school but it’s difficult to have done everything “right” and still not get the results I was hoping for

This feels weird for me to even write. At work, they're starting a bonus structure based on physical health. I understand healthier employees means less costs in insurance and probably workers comp, but this feels discriminatory. The test consists of body fat %, blood pressure, cholesterol level, A1C, and fasting glucose.
I'm a type 2 diabetic, my doctor is happy with with fasting glucose and A1C, but I would never qualify for this bonus (The levels required would put me in the non-diabetic range). To complicate this further, since I started having seizures my primary doctor has taken me off some medications since he is worried about them conflicting with my anti-seizure meds or possibly even causing the seizures.
Now, the bonus is small; less than $100/month, but is it right to feel discriminated? How would this make you feel?
