2025.01.24 23:30 Zeddblidd Nosferatu the Vampyre (1979)

2025-049 / Zedd MAP: 78.56 / MLZ MAP: 73.75 / Score Gap: 4.81
Wikipedia / IMDb / Official Trailer / Our Collection - The Werner Herzog Collection, Vol. 1
There is a story - a dark echo from the shadowed corridors of human yearning. It begins, as all tales of doom, with a man who believes himself untouched by the world’s malevolence. His name is Jonathan Harker, a clerk of modest ambition. He is summoned from the comfort of his home in Wismar to the foreboding depths of the Carpathian Mountains, where Count Dracula waits like an ancient sickness, patient and inevitable.
Harker’s journey is a descent into the sublime indifference of nature, into a landscape that dwarfs the human soul. The mountains rise like cathedral spires, haunted by a silence older than time. As he nears the castle, he is greeted not with grandeur but with decay - a ruin, teetering on the edge of its own extinction. Inside, Dracula greets him: a cadaverous figure, his pallor the color of ash, his eyes heavy with the sorrow of centuries. He is no ordinary villain, but a creature trapped by the gravity of his own existence. The count signs the papers to buy an estate in Wismar, but his real hunger is not for land - it is for life, the vitality that has eluded him for centuries.
Harker becomes ensnared in Dracula’s web, his body weakening as his mind unravels. Meanwhile, the Count sails to Wismar, a pestilential presence among rats and rotting timber. He is not merely a bringer of death; he is death itself, a force of nature that consumes without malice, without joy. Upon his arrival, the town succumbs to a plague - a grotesque dance of the living and the dead. The people despair, for they sense, as animals do, that there is no escape from what they face.
Lucy, Harker’s wife, becomes the story’s fragile center. She is luminous, yet doomed, her beauty a rebuke to the darkness. She alone understands the Count’s tragic nature - that he is both predator and prisoner. In an act of quiet heroism, she sacrifices herself to lure him into the sunlight, her purity destroying his corruption. Dracula dies not with fury but with a weary acceptance, as if welcoming the release he has long sought.
And yet, as the dust of tragedy settles, the story resists closure. Harker, now infected by the Count’s curse, rides into the distance, carrying the weight of this horror into the world beyond. The film ends not with triumph, but with an unsettling ambiguity, as if to say: the shadow never truly lifts. It only finds a new place to linger.
This is not a tale of good and evil. It is a meditation on the futility of resistance against forces that dwarf us. It is an exploration of the beautiful, the grotesque, and the fragile balance between them. The vampire is a mirror, reflecting our own mortality, and the story is the slow, mournful realization that to be human is to be vulnerable - to the unknown, to the eternal, to the inevitable.

2025.01.24 23:30 Imsmart-9819 PhD admissions rejection feedback

I applied for the PhD program in Plant biology at UC Berkeley and UC Davis. I've been rejected from both. I also haven't gotten an interview request from any other program yet. Someone told me that if I hadn't gotten an interview request by this point, I probably wouldn't make it into any program. If that's the case, this is my third year of getting rejected from a PhD program. It's been a long-time dream of mine, and I want to figure out what I'm doing wrong and how to get into a program. I emailed the UC Berkeley grad admissions program, pleading for their feedback on my application. So far, I can think of these reasons why I failed:

  1. Bad undergrad GPA: My undergrad GPA was 2.98. Granted, this was in 2014, which is eleven years ago. Since then, I've had four years of job experience at biotech companies, spent three years volunteering in labs, and earned a master's degree, earning a GPA of 3.90. I thought all of this would overcome my bad grades from eleven years ago. But maybe not.
  2. Applying to overly competitive schools: I keep applying to overly competitive schools like UC Berkeley and UC Davis. Perhaps no matter what I do, I won't have a chance at these schools. How do I scope out a school I have a chance at then? Do I research their attendance numbers? I applied to Arizona State University and thought I had a good chance of getting accepted. But they haven't emailed me back either, which I take as a rejection.
  3. Not being targeted enough in my statement: I didn't spend enough time last year reaching out to professors and getting their feedback. I could've written my statement with them in mind if I had done that. And also get their support during my admissions process. I'm always nervous when I email professors, partly because I avoided it a lot last year.
If I can contact these programs, I could get their honest feedback and work on it from there. Do you know of a way I can do that? Please let me know, and thanks.

2025.01.24 23:30 DamnatioCorporis Terapia Hormonal "escondido"

2025.01.24 23:30 unanimouslyanomymous Is this stolen valor

So we got into a discussion at the office the other day, and I think there is either a major generational difference here, or I'm fucked up. I was talking with one of my Soldiers about a funny thing that happened at the doctor's office the other day. I mentioned that I was there for an injury that happened almost 15 years ago as a result of a VBIED (vehicle borne IED for you young kids). The funny thing was me telling the doctor that Soldiers of my generation didn't get PTSD, we just drink and it fixes it. She didn't appreciate that and it was a funny response. That's not the main point of this story, but I know someone will ask. This Soldier has known me for a while and interrupted to say he was surprised I had a purple heart. I told him I didn't have one because TBIs really weren't taken seriously and the unit at that time has a policy that only combat Soldiers could receive combat awards. Yes, illegal, I know. I 100% guarantee you someone will guess the unit because every time this gets mentioned in here it's like a weird reunion and this gets brought up often Literally everyone in the room lost their shit. They were trying to say I should pursue it before retirement. I feel like that is embarrassing, and kinda skeevy. I have a friend that was also not awarded one, that still walk around with shrapnel in their legs (separate event). In the words of the medic I reported it to 15 years ago "everyone has a TBI, this is Iraq." Am I fucked up? My wife and several friends agree with me, but we're all from the same generation. What is the metric for feeling like you deserve something? The example being thrown at me is there's SPCs in INSCOM medically retiring after never leaving their families because they followed sooner guide online and claimed an upset tummy. Have we changed culturally, or do TBIs from blasts count nowadays? What counts as wounded? For my food order may I have a yuengling? No food, just the beer because my head hurts.

2025.01.24 23:30 Outrageous-Nerve88 You guys remember the "Bump-it"?

As a 35yr old man, I think about the Bump-It way too often, it crosses my mind at least every other month. No idea why, but it's burned into my mind.
