Really hoping someone here will have ideas for next steps - I'm kind of desperate at this point because this kitty is suffering and no one seems to be able to help us, beyond some degree of symptom management. She is currently under the care of an internal medicine specialist as well as her regular vet (and an assortment of other vets who have seen her at the walk-in clinic or at the ER).
Short version - every few months, this cat has intense vomiting episodes where she will vomit repeatedly for a few minutes, rest for 10-15 minutes (sometimes longer), and then begin vomiting again. It's usually impossible to get oral cerenia in her so we end up going to the vet for a cerenia injection (and sometimes fluids). That usually stops the vomiting but she will continue to show signs of nausea and discomfort for several days afterwards, despite daily cerenia. I can tell when she's having one of these flares because she will smack her lips repeatedly, sit in a hunched position, and sometimes make the most heartbreaking yowls like she's in pain. No other symptoms, her stool is normal and she eats normally when she's not actively nauseous.
Every time we go in, her exam is fine; every time we run bloodwork, it comes back fine. They keep checking her PLI thinking it might be pancreatitis, but that has come back normal 3x now, including twice when her blood was taken during one of these episodes. (The last time I brought her to the ER vet for cerenia in the middle of the night, she did have an elevated temperature, but bloodwork and urinalysis with culture all came back normal and the temp was gone by our appointment with the regular vet the next day, so no one seemed very concerned.)
She had an abdominal ultrasound that came back normal. She had an endoscopy with biopsies of her stomach and duodenum, which found "mild to moderate" inflammation and a polyp that was debulked. We hoped maybe the polyp was the cause of the vomiting, but she has continued to have episodes since then.
She has been on budesonide (1mg, 2-3x per week) since October 2024 (we tried reducing the frequency from 3x to 2x per week in December since she was having significant weight gain, but after the latest episode the vet said to go back up to 3x per week; I'm not really convinced there was a relationship between the dose change and the episode though, since the episode happened a month after we reduced the dose).
She had a trial of fluoxetine for about 6 months in case it was stress related, and while she did seem more chill in general, it had no effect on the vomiting.
She has been on a hypoallergenic diet for at least a year, Hill's z/d dry food and Royal Canin selected protein PD wet food (these were chosen in part because my other cat, who has food allergies, was already on them). This didn't seem to make a difference either way for her vomiting. She tends to throw up more at night, sometimes within a few hours of eating but sometimes it's randomly at like 4am, there's not a clear pattern to it.
The vet said we could try a different food, but otherwise seems at a loss for ideas. I'm having a hard time understanding why the episodes would be so intermittent if it was related to her diet, but certainly open to that.
Most recently, she has had two episodes within a two week period, which is more frequent than usual (typically she goes a month or two between episodes). These are the notes I've taken during the current episode:
- Dinner (wet food) at ~4:40pm
- Threw up 5-6x at 6:40pm
- 3x at 7:25pm
- was fine the rest of the night, so did not bring her to the ER
- 4-5x around 7:30am
- 2x around 8am
- 2x around 9:30am
- again was fine all day, so I thought maybe we could avoid the ER (since of course it's a Sunday and the regular vet isn't open)
- Dinner (wet food) at ~5pm, but appeared nauseous and didn't eat any until around 6:15 when she had a few bites
- 4x at 6:22pm
- 4x at 7:10pm
- 5x at 7:40pm .
- ...and at this rate we may be off to the ER soon :(

2025.01.27 04:05 gh0stiecat Question about deleting hidden file
I was moving some files out of a folder and completely emptied it. I checked the folder properties after I was done and noticed that the size was listed as 47 KB with 1 file despite apparently being empty. Looking up how to fix this problem led to me making hidden files visible and finding this, which I assume is the culprit.
Onto my question: Is this file safe to delete? I'm not super computer-savvy so I wanted to make sure before potentially breaking something 😅
Follow-up question: What caused this to show up? I had this happen with a few different folders I was clearing out at the same time as this one, and I've never seen it before. Is it a bug?
