2025.01.27 17:17 Ash_Melon Equipment recommendations?
Just got the Korg Volca Beats (my first drum machine)
I love how the step mode and live recording works but I really wish it were more complex than just 16th notes. I'd also like something that has more options regarding each individual sound, like more ways to edit the kick etc.
I'm using this for live playing, not getting into recording atm but I'd like to in the future.
Any suggestions?

2025.01.27 17:17 MisterSnippy The Reading Room
When he was a hatchling, Ssessil had been told that every Class was a thread woven into a tapestry of the world. The size of each thread being only as large as ones Level allowed. As he aged, Ssessil had realized that some Classes were spun only at higher Levels, and so his Level 7 [Salesdrake] Class had nowhere to take him. He was trapped in his job. Working mostly alone at a small bookstore, tucked away behind the first wall in a killzone side-street of Manus. Every day he stocked the shelves, helped customers find what they were looking for, swept the floors, took customers' payment, and sold books. It felt so mundane, and yet so horribly tolerable. It wasn't a bad job at all. In fact, Ssessil could easily imagine doing it year after year, decade upon decade, and that thought scared him.
It was hard to avoid dwelling on it in all honesty, but his job would never control him. He simply liked books. Ssessil read books and savoured them. Often, wishing he lived in Fissival, a City of Books. Manus' library, while substantial, contained literature that leant towards historical and militaristic, which got tiring after awhile. But regardless, reading was his life. He had actually turned down a Level twice to avoid speed-reading and instant comprehension Skills. The Titan's "A Guide To Proper Levelling and Skill Aquisition" had taught him to be more proactive about his Levelling.
Ssessil sighed, scanning a mental page in the book he was reading, but not really understanding the words. A flash of light snapped him out of his musing. That signaled that the front door had been opened, along with a bell that chimed a soft ding ding. He thought time to stop reading, and get into [Salesdrake] mode, and tucked away his [Reader’s Mental Copy (Mundane)]. The front door wasn't actually visible from the counter, but a small mirror had been placed in a corner to allow him to take a sneaky peek at entering customers and would-be [Thieves]. As soon as Ssessil saw who it was, he sighed.
An elderly male voice sounded out, one dour and slightly frightened.
"Young Mister Ssessil, are you in?"
The voice slunk around the corner. Vecliv. An old onyx-scaled Drake. He was some kind of [Soothsayer] or [Doomsday Shouter] or something. He smelled a bit like a pair of wet socks, and looked like one too. It was honestly a wonder the Watch allowed him to stand around outside and disrupt the peace.
Ssessil always made sure to be polite though, in that sort of generic 'Adventurer’s Guild [Receptionist]' kind of way, so he started with a standard, "Hello, Mister Vecliv, would you be interested in purchasing one of our books today? We recently just got another book in about the first Antinium War, along with a short write-up of modern logstics by [General] Edellein Blackwing of Pallass."
Vecliv's chest heaved as he got ready to talk. Considering his occupation, which Ssessil thought for sure was just screaming and shouting out in the streets, he had a prodigious lung-capacity any Oldblood would feel jealous of. The old Drake started to gesticulate his arms around like the world's worst [Composer] and spoke at a volume just below shouting.
"Young Mister Ssessil, I've just come because I have something very important to tell you! Information that may just save your life!"
He thrusted a finger out into the air. This was about the twentieth time he had come in and said that, which really put the claim to doubt, but the [Reader] had to grit his teeth and smile. All part of good customer service, Ssess. At first he had felt bad for the Drake, but his pity had gradually moved on towards the fourth stage of grief.
"Alright, Mister Vecliv, but I need to remind you that this store is for paying customers."
The elderly Drake waved away his response before starting his spiel. He came to warn Ssessil about something different each time. Last time it was to warn him about 'invisible extra-dimensional beings who ate souls'. Ick. Ssessil figured he was just lonely.
"Oh, of course, of course Young Mister Ssessil! But first I need to inform you of the threat that stalks our city! Evil undead Turnscales. They conspire against Manus! I have it on good authority that they even consort with... vampires."
He said the last part conspiratorially and leaned in with one non-existant eyebrow raised. Ssessil mentally banged his head against the countertop. He genuienly felt bad for Vecliv, too. From what he managed to gather, the Drake was a [Veteran] of the First Antinium War. A war like that changed a Drake, or anyone else, for that matter.
"And what do these... evil undead turnscales, look like?"
Vecliv's eyes closed slightly, then widened again, bloodshot.
"Oh! They look just like any one of us! That's the thing! They could be anywhere, and you would never even know!"
He waved his claws in an arc like he was casting a spell and Ssessil felt something inside him die, but humored him anyway.
"Well, how can I keep a watch out and be safe if they look like normal people?"
He put some not-so-subtle emphasis on the normal part that would hopefully subconsciously influence Vecliv.
"Oh! Uh." He screwed his eyes shut for a moment. Then they snapped open. It was a little unsettling. "Sunlight is poisonous to them! So they keep to the shadows. And they like blood, so keep a watch for anyone who stays in the shadows and smells of blood!"
Ssessil neglected to point out that the vast majority of Manus was in shadow all day, lit only by torch and magelight, and any passing [Soldier] could smell of blood. He had just described at least 60% of Manus' population at any given moment. Also, Ssessil was pretty sure that vampires were the ones who drank blood, but he wasn't about to correct the Drake.
"Okay Mister Vecliv, I'll be sure to keep a watch out for anyone who stays out of the sun and... smells of blood."
Vecliv smiled, then suddenly gave him a sad, pained look which startled Ssessil, and reached out to grab his claws, holding them almost painfully tight.
"Be careful Ssessil. There are things out there you can't even begin to imagine. We are small, so small..."
The old Drake trailed off, and Ssessil wondered what kind of Drake he had been, before the Black Tide had hollowed him out. Somewhere deep inside, the Drake he used to be was still there, but only for a moment, and then he was gone again.
"I will." He said, and found that he meant it. "Now, I have to remind you that this store is for paying customers only. Would you like to make a purchase?"
Vecliv had already started to inch towards the doorway.
"I, uh, I have decided to not make a purchase today, but I will be back soon!"
The door closed gently.
Ding ding.
After doing a final inventory check and stashing the cashbox away, Ssessil was finally escaping the bookstore. There hadn't been too many customers that day, which wasn't rare on a Nendas, but clientele was generally steady. Though tomorrow would be a tough day of work, for Rersha was finally coming back from Fissival with a new shipment of books. Her store got most of its business from selling what you couldn't find in the Manus library; Romance novels, mystery books, bronze-store magazines, that sort of thing. His arms were already aching from the thought of sorting all those damn books.
Through the window, the day had grown dim, the sun falling low in the 16th hour. He made sure to lock the door. [Thieves] were rare, but Manus was a city of pawn shops, so anything that did get stolen tended to be very hard to get back. He skirted underneath crenellations, around towers, and beneath buttresses that had been more beautiful before time had its way with them. He was heading towards Tessii's. He could already feel excitement welling within him, and he hoped he was managing to keep the flush of blue off his face. It was time for the thing he waited every week for. It was time for... book club.
He hit the knocker against the door with a clang clang clang and something clattered, then he heard a gravelly male voice shout.
"Ssessil, come in! We're all here already!"
He opened the door and clomped up the stairs. Usually he was the second one there after Tessii, but the streets had been packed that day.
"Sorry I made you all wait, I thought I was making good time. You didn't start without me, right?"
He heard Garurr's rumbling voice say something he couldn't quite catch. Garurr was a grey-brown gnoll in his mid-30s, from some city west of Manus. He was a [Scout], but he semi-retired and now worked for the Runner's Guild. He had the best Skills. Tessii and Olevem were around Ssessil's age. Tessii's bright voice followed, floating sing-song down the steps.
"We can't start without you Ssessil! Anyways, you'll never believe what happened!"
Ssessil summitted the steps and saw Garurr, Tessii, and Olevem sitting around the table in the middle of the room all smiles. Ssessil felt himself gape like a fish. Five loaves of bread sat on the table. One already drawn and quartered. Tessii spoke up.
"Someone messed up an order at the bakery. They were going to just throw a bunch of bread away, but Olevem asked they gave it to him!"
Her smile was like sunshine for his soul. Olevem followed.
"Feel free to take what you want, Ssess."
"You're joking. Five?"
Olevem looked abashed, his scales flushing yellow. He was born and raised in Fissival, a [Baker] by trade. He moved to Manus for reasons Ssessil could never guess at.
"Actually, it was six, but I ate one on the way here."
They all laughed. It was dark outside, though the sky was still a pale blue. It was easy to look at it, and imagine the whole world outside the walls was that way. Just one solid blue void, and the closer you looked, the faster it sucked you in.
They chatted for a few minutes, Ssessil pecking at a loaf of bread like a bird. Then they settled down, full of reverence, and Garurr began in faux regality.
"We will be discussing Chapter four of "The Walls We Built", by Gervirr Descale. I'll go ahead and start, is everyone ready?"
They all nodded and gave affirmations. Ssessil felt his palms grow sweaty, excitement palpable. Garurr spoke.
"[Shared Realistic Daydream]"
He was there. He stood outside the walls of what was becoming Oteslia. The sky was aflame, with the setting sun hung frozen in the sky, and overhead oranges chased dark purples and royal blues. The Tree was there, bathed in orange, in all its brilliance and loneliness, as even then it had been alone for a very long time. Around him, endless fields of flowers bloomed like the world turned painting. Poppies, glasswhistle, forget-me-nots, and mageglove, all ran and melded and joined eachother in groups and schools and kissed and tickled at the legs of friends who laughed and watched them dance in the wind. Behind him, great trees grew, cradled in the sun's dying warmth, whose children now cast shade over paths that groups of weary travelers loved and felt safe under. A light breeze caressed his scales gently. Whispering that that before summer has set in, the last few days of cool gentle spring still care.
Towards the city, groups of long-dead Drake and Gnoll children played in the waters that sparkled along the shore, and a few kindly [Druids] tended to small gardens that housed birds and other small animals. The walls were still growing, just as the city itself was, and would. It was hard to imagine such beauty, such peaceful days, and know that untold suffering had come before, and would come long after he was gone. Ssessil took a deep breath, tasting the sweetness of fresh air so old and unfamiliar to him now, though knew it to be the same air he would be gifted if he one-day visited Oteslia. It was painful. Tears pooled and ran between his scales, tickling as they rolled off and fell into the grasses.
"Many built their cities greater than we built Oteslia."
A voice came from somewhere, what sounded like a middle-aged Drake who stood next to Ssessil, and he knew him to be Gervirr. The [Author] smiled in his voice, and continued.
"We built them for many reasons, for fear of our ancestors, for our love of them. Very few indeed were ever built like Oteslia. Their names are lost to me now, and to you, who reads this, I suspect even glimmerings of their existence have long since turned to dust."
He sighed, and it was as if Oteslia itself sighed, a slow gentle exhale.
"Yes, too few by far we built like Oteslia. Cities built of love and care, rather than fear and hatred, but remember that without cities like Manus and Lesegoth, there would be no Oteslia or Imlerith."
Ssessil felt a claw on his shoulder, though he could not turn his head to look. Gervirr spoke.
"Remember this; Only with a just strength can we protect love."
He pressed something into Ssessil's claws, and then he was gone, and Ssessil was once-again sitting at the table with Garurr, Tessii, and Olevem.
They all took a moment to collect themselves. Tessii sniffled, Garurr apologised and then got up to go wipe his eyes. Olevem looked ashen. Tessii began.
"I don't know what to say."
She paused.
"We've read many books as a group, some really really bad," they chuckled together, "But it's the first time I've ever experienced something like that."
Olevem spoke, shakily.
"Does anyone want to go get a drink?"
They found a bar a few minutes walk from Tessii's apartment, not one they had been to before, but one that could be found anywhere in Manus. One filled with laughing card-playing [Soldiers] on leave and young hopefuls looking for combat tips. Garurr got them a table and they each ordered a drink or cocktail. Ssessil sipped at his beer, watching lights dance across Tessii's pale yellow scales, then tried.
"You have the best Skills, Garurr."
Olevem murmured an agreement through some orangeish cocktail. Garurr gave a handsome Gnollish grin.
"It's only a matter of time before you guys get something similar. I bet after tonight you'll Level."
Ssessil felt a burn deep within him, a want. A need. He spoke.
"I'll never regret reading. Even though it's not 'real', I feel like I've been on more adventures than almost anyone else in the world."
Garurr slapped him on the shoulder, causing his own beer to slosh.
"I've been on adventures. It's worth it to travel, believe me, but the vast majority of the people in the world have never done the things we have. Never seen them either, too."
Olevem smiled.
"It almost feels like we're in on a secret."
Ssessil waited for Tessii to speak up, and after choking on her cocktail and having a bit dribble through her noseholes, she did.
"I feel sorry for the peoples who have to live without books. I think in most places only rich people can read."
Garurr followed.
"Yeah. I bet most Humans in the north have never even read a book. And the Tribes? Forget it."
The [Scout] gulped, and downed the rest of his beer.
"Anyways, sorry lads, I have to head out. Tessii is it alright if I stop back by the apartment to grab a loaf of the bread?"
She had a confused look for a moment, then brightened again.
"Oh, I completely forgot about the bread! Sure, go ahead. Remember, the spare key's behind the cracked stone on the left, put it back and lock the door when you leave."
Garurr waved behind him.
"Got it, boss. See you guys next Nendas."
Ssessil sat at the table with Olevem and Tessii and they chatted for a bit before Olevem had to go. Now it was just Ssessil and Tessii talking, and he loved her. He loved the colour of her scales, how her tail looked, and how she smiled. But more than that, he loved who she was. Who she let herself be. He loved Tessii more than anything, but they would be best friends, and that was fine with him, because Tessii was a turnscale.
Some Drakes could never be together, and though if he really wanted, he could write a story, and one day jump into it and be there with her, he never would. He wanted her to be happy. So they finished talking, said their goodbyes, and Ssessil was alone. A few drunken Drake and Gnoll [Soldiers] were drinking, making lewd jokes about Skills and Classes. The [Bartender] was signaling a [Server] to wrap it up, and gradually the bar headed towards its close. He paid for his drinks and left.
The first sign that something was wrong was that he was being followed. A figure hung back, but kept equadistant to him as he went, their robe reflected in small mirrors and enchanted shop windows. The second sign was that he couldn't manage to shout or call for help. Ssessil began to run, slightly drunk, down the street, but the figure was fast. Too fast.
He wanted to scream, to shout, to bang on doors, but instead found himself in a dark corner, surrounded on all sides by buildings and archetecture built to keep him safe in one of the safest cities in the world. The figure approached, and he thought it was a Drake. He swore he saw a flash of claws, or maybe a glint of teeth. Then, everything stopped, and Ssessil stood in [The Reading Room: 15 Minutes].
He opened his claws and found the petal of a flower, gentle and blue, resting there. He set it on a sidetable, next to his [Mental Bookshelf], and then he screamed. He only had fifteen minutes. Now, less. He had no idea what to do. Ssessil had no Skills for fighting, he was only a Level 7 [Salesdrake] and a Level 23 [Devoted Reader]. What was he supposed to do? He was going to be mugged, probably not killed, since this was Manus, but that was no guarantee.
He paced back and forth, tracing patterns on leather-bound books with his claws, feeling the wood-grain of the sidetable and the smooth leather chair, and gradually, he calmed down. He had a few minutes left. Tense people die, calm people live. He needed to be calm. Calm. He breathed in.
The Drake lunged at him. Ssessil's mind went ice-cold, a tingling zipped down his scales. He began to move, almost without thinking. He threw himself to the side, his body screaming in distress, the figure went skittering past.
"I-I'm sorry. I don't-"
Something spoke to him. [Doomsday Shouter's Warning]. Run.
Adreneline went pumping through his body, though he felt nothing. One leg after another sent him down the street, through a crowd of people, and further still until he fumbled a key into his lock, threw open the door, shut it, barred it, and sat gasping on the steps. When the figure missed him, and went past, he saw it. The teeth, the eyes. Vampire.
