This is a typical narcissistic/codependent story.
Myself (52f) and my spouse (44m) have been together for 7 years and married 5. It was okay at first, then the drinking started. He had stopped using meth before I met him (I didn’t know he had used until a few months later) but has been on ADD meds (he used the meth when he didn’t have the meds). Then the drinking started right before we got married. Not excess at first, and there were no immediate issues. But gradually, the amount and the potency increased. His family didn’t tell me that he had a drinking problem prior to this when he was with his ex girlfriend, I found out AFTER we got married.
Fast forward to now…it’s the same old thing. I’ve encouraged him to slow down/stop the drinking. He insists he’s going to change/stop, but of course he never does. Now we have added legal THC and huffing nitrous oxide within the last few months, and I’m at my wits end.
I was dumb enough to move to another rental with him last year, it was done quickly to get out of a bad living situation, so I added him to the lease. Quickly regretted it because it was less than a week when everything started again. He even left briefly after a huge fight to stay with his parents, and promised everyone he was going to AA. He went to one meeting and stopped, but the family still thinks he’s going and is congratulating him for doing so well.
In my state I can’t do anything if he’s on the lease because unless they arrest him they can’t remove him from his primary residence (yes the police have been called by my daughter who lives with us). I have another rental as our lease is up, and I didn’t put him on it. I made it clear a month ago that he would not be living with me if he continued to drink and not get help, and he continued, and as far as I’m concerned he made his decision.
He asked me TODAY (4 days before move out) what was up. I said I’m signing a lease today. He was like you weren’t going to tell me? I again said I made it clear a month ago where I stood and you continued because you obviously didn’t think that I would go through with it. He said you have to put me on the lease, I said, actually I don’t, and left for work.
So the rest of my morning has been how I’m deceitful, greedy, uncaring if he’s homeless, etc.
I’m also mad at his family, specifically his mom, because when he drinks, he calls her, she sides with him, and it just makes my situation even worse. I haven’t spoken to her in months because of it, and I told him I refuse to speak to her again unless she apologizes for interfering.
So AITAH for not putting his name on the lease?
