2025.01.31 01:53 Ok-Secretary969 Grief
Hi all,
My girl lost her brother in December. She is grieving. I brought home a medical foster and she seemed to act more normal in his company. She did go after him twice, as she is very dog selective. He unfortunately passed away 10 days later. We expected him to make a full recovery.
So we are grieving together again. All we do is snuggle and when she’s not snuggling, she is sitting and staring at me whining. Our routine is still the same, she still goes for walks and rides with me everywhere.
Yes, I could get another, but with her being dog selective, it has the be a diligent and careful choice.
I guess I’m just scared to take the leap again. I don’t want to pick a dog that she won’t get along with. I’ve been socializing her at our local dog park and she has good days and bad days.
Any advice?

Hello Axiom community, i use this tool for web scraping. I recently tried to make a bot for inserting data into an iFrame and it just totally bugs out.
Does anyone have any pro-tips or examples that they've built to navigate an iFrame? I keep it checked but I cannot seem to input data into fields and select drop-downs.

2025.01.31 01:53 Hiro_of_Lunar When did the seatbelt sign stop meaning anything?
I’ve noticed in the last maybe year… nobody cares at all when the seat belt sign is on, like people going into the overhead bins, getting up to stretch their legs, whole line ups forming for the bathroom… like it’s wild… did I just start paying attention and this has always been happening? I swear people use to sit tight… I distinctly remember hearing people argue with the flight attendants that they really needed to use the bathrooms…

" Good Hunter, you've done well, the night is near its end. Now I will show you mercy. You will die, forget the dream, and awake under the morning sun. You will be freed from this terrible Hunter's Dream. " Do you accept? This was done by the LEGENDARY WolfOfBaltimore (on insta) and I genuinely have no words, this is still very fresh so healed pics will come with time- I'm so fucking happy with this. If you saw my other post, we scrapped the hunters mark idea (for today at least) and focused on the blade itself. 2025.01.31 01:53 Homeboy15999 Gpu at $500 or lower
My beloved evga 2070s just died earlier this week (still playing other games just fine but it decided to won't make any video ouput anf freezing after playing CP 2077). So I'm looking for a replacement, I don't really care about ray tracing, all i want is a decent gaming performance (from 60-90 fps) at 1440p from high to very high setting in War Thunder, NMS, CP 2077, RDR2. Right now I'm more leaning to AMD side but the driver problem is what holding me back. I'm really appreciate every recommendations, thanks in advance.

2025.01.31 01:53 Jzjwiebe Pokémon Platinum Tier List but I Grossly Overanalyze Every Encounter
WARNING! THIS IS A VERY LONG POST! Seriously, don’t read all of this unless you have 15 minutes of time to kill or are addicted to this game like me. In that case, you have good taste in Nuzlockes and I hope you enjoy reading a several thousand word long post about a 16 year old children’s video game.
A few months ago, I posted a tier list of Pokémon Platinum expressing my thoughts about every available encounter in the game. However, looking back at it, that tier list had a lot of unfair assumptions within it and both overrated and underrated specific encounters without properly looking into their overall performance. Since I recently revisited this game and did a lot of experimenting with certain encounters, I decided to revisit this topic to see how much my opinions have changed.
For starters, the biggest thing I wanted to change about the tiering process was paying attention to how each Pokémon performed during every split of the game they were available in. Therefore, like the masochist I am, I created tier lists for every major split of the game that outline which Pokémon perform best for the notable fights they present. There are a total of nine splits (one for each gym leader and one for the Elite Four) and each encounter was given a ranking of either S, A, B, C, D, or F. S-Tier represents the absolute best Pokémon to use during that portion of the game, meaning that they are able to sweep almost every fight or heavily contribute at the very least. A-Tier represents the encounters that can either sweep notable fights within the split but struggle with another boss or perform solidly without any notable losing matchup. B-Tier represents the encounters that are good during that portion of the game but have notable weaknesses that hold them back, C-Tier represents an average performance during a split, D-Tier is for the encounters that are generally poor choices for that part of the game, and F-Tier is for encounters that are mostly useless. Finally, as a bonus for the Elite Four tier list, the SS-Tier was created just for the Pokémon that are able to trivialize the most difficult section of the game.
Before I over analyze all of your favourite encounters, and Blissey, I need to mention that not all splits are created equally, meaning that certain sections will be weighted more than others. In my personal opinion, the hardest fights in a Pokémon Platinum Nuzlocke are Mars 1, Jupiter 1, Fantina, Candice, Cyrus 3, Lucian, and Cynthia. Of course, there are other difficult fights like Maylene, Rival 5, and Crasher Wake, but the previous mentions are the more notorious examples that are most commonly brought up in discussions. To sum it all up, the most important splits for an encounter to perform well in are the Roark (because it’s early game), Gardenia, Fantina, Candice, Volkner, and especially Elite Four splits. Without further ado, time for me to rant about my opinions just to get approximately 200 upvotes.
Full Tier List
S-Tier (1-6)
Gyarados (+): The notorious noodle is the definitive number one encounter in this game and it’s not even close. Outside of having a poor Roark split as a Magikarp (I wonder why), Gyarados is a key contributor in every part of the game once it evolves at level 20. Access to Intimidate, excellent stats, and phenomenal typing let it steamroll the entire game. Even in fights where it should lose in such as Volkner, Gyarados can still reliably sweep with a Wacan berry, Dragon Dance, and Earthquake. As for its supposedly lackluster starting moveset, 102 base power Returns off of base 125 attack is more than enough to get past the Gardenia Split while Bite is great against Fantina. Dive, Flamethrower, and Thunderbolt are all good enough to muscle through Maylene, Wake, and Byron, and once you get to Candice, you finally learn Dragon Dance. I know this is a generic pick, but Gyarados is the most ban worthy encounter for a reason.
Garchomp: Early Earthquake and Dragon Rage, fantastic typing and stats, sweeping potential with Swords Dance, and clearly the most dominant Pokémon in the late game where performance matters most. Isn’t in S+ because Gabite falls off after Maylene.
Scizor: The most reliable Swords Dance sweeper for the majority of the game. Technician Bullet Punch is fantastic priority and synergizes well with Brick Break for coverage. Bug/Steel typing and Roost for reliable healing let it dominate against the Byron, Candice, and Elite Four splits.
Gliscor: Another fantastic Swords Dance sweeper. Competitive players know just how absurd Ground/Flying is and Gliscor’s mix of great speed, power, and bulk are further amplified by Roost. Poor Wake and Candice splits make it slightly worse than Scizor overall despite having more S-Tier placements.
Infernape (-): Easily the best starter in the game. Despite having a high skill cap, the sheer amount of coverage and utility that this one mon can do is unmatched. Want to grant switch-ins and preserve momentum? U-Turn. Want to provide chip damage against Cyrus’ entire team? Set up Stealth Rock against the lead Houndoom. Want to muscle through trainers? Close Combat, Fire Blast, Flamethrower, and Flare Blitz are all great. Need coverage for bad matchups? Pick your choice of Thunder Punch, Grass Knot, Stone Edge, Shadow Claw, Earthquake, and more.
Blissey (-): Okay, lower your pitchforks and hear me out. I was very tempted to put this in the A-Tier, but its performance in the Elite Four was just too good. The real problem with Blissey in this game is the sheer amount of physical threats. Sure, it walls stuff like Cynthia’s Milotic, Lucian’s Alakazam, and more, but several of the most prominent threats in the game are physical such as Cyrus’ Honchkrow, Maylene’s Lucario, Lucian’s Gallade, and Cynthia’s Garchomp. There are so many threats that absolutely destroy Blissey and unlike the other S-Tier Pokémon, bar Garchomp before it evolves, there are crucial fights like Cyrus 3, Maylene, and Bertha that Blissey fails to do much of anything against, effectively knocking it out of the top five in my opinion.
A-Tier (7-33)
Gengar (+): A consistently strong and reliable mon that isn’t in the S-Tier because of its abysmal early game learnset. If Gastly learned special moves like Sludge and Ominous Wind at early levels, it would have performed so much better in the Gardenia and Fantina splits. Outside of that, three immunities, nuclear special attack, great speed, fantastic coverage from the Game Corner TMs, Choice Specs, and Destiny Bond for a certain land shark create a monster of a Pokémon that can always put in work.
Bronzong (+): One of the most reliable late game walls with its great typing, good utility, and decent power in addition to bulk. Heatproof and Levitate add on to what is already the best typing in the game and consistent performances in the last three splits make it a solid backbone of any team.
Gallade (+): Another abuser of Swords Dance (have you guessed that set-up moves are broken by now?). After it evolves in the fourth split, it becomes one of the most consistent performers throughout the rest of the game. Great coverage between its STABs, level-up learnset, and the elemental punches, good special bulk to let it set up easily, and a high attack stat let it easily sweep through fights like Maylene, Byron, Saturn, and even Volkner (with a good speed nature and IVs). Just keep it away from the Cyrus fights if you can.
Snorlax (+): I guess having this thing fully evolved with access to STAB 102 base power Returns before fighting Mars is broken in the early game. After that, Snorlax alternates between being good and great for the upcoming splits.
Togekiss (+): Access to phenomenal coverage and utility in one Pokémon sounds like an easy S. Unfortunately, Togetic is quite mediocre up until it evolves, keeping it in the A-Tier. Encore and Yawn are both great tools alongside 60% flinching Air Slashes.
Empoleon (+): The purest example of being mediocre at best until reaching its final stage. Even against Roark, Piplup’s Bubble is only a decent damage dealing tool despite being super-effective. But once you evolve, you get access to an incredible tank that stone walls numerous threats including 60% of Cyrus’ final team, Cynthia’s Milotic, Lucian’s Espeon, Crasher Wake’s whole team (Grass Knot the Quagsire), and the entire Spear Pillar double battle. Easily one of the best stallers in the game since most of its best moves are re-learnable (Rest, Surf, Ice Beam).
Heracross: Up there with Crobat and Gyarados for being the best encounters for the early game. Guts is always a great ability to have and its typing makes it perfect for Gardenia, Maylene, and Byron. It falls off a bit later on due to poor defensive typing and middling bulk, but it deserves praise for dominating the early and mid games.
Houndoom: Scooby Doom is the best non-starter fire type by a wide margin. It has the amazing combination of good speed and power that lets it sweep Candice and put in work against Lucian. Access to Flamethrower, Sunny Day, and Solar Beam upon capture even let it contribute against poor matchups like Maylene, Bertha, and Wake if necessary.
Alakazam: Like Gengar, it suffers from a poor early game learnset, but once you get to Veilstone (Psychic TM) and later Celestic Town (Choice Specs), you have access to a monster of a glass cannon that can sweep with a couple presses of the A button.
Gardevoir: I can see this thing being placed above Alakazam, but I kept it here solely because of its speed stat. Base 80 is decent, but is nowhere near as good as Alakazam’s base 120. Additionally, picking Gardevoir means that you give up on getting Gallade which is a huge opportunity cost. Despite all this, its coverage is much better than Alakazam’s with Thunderbolt alone making it better against matchups like Wake and Cyrus.
Espeon: Easily the worst of the three psychics in the A-Tier for being a dollar store version of Alakazam. Despite this, Gengar tier speed and special attack stats make it a consistent Specs user and its coverage of Grass Knot and Shadow Ball make it good for most bosses. It lacks Focus Blast to deal with steel and dark types, but most nuzlockers don’t use it anyways. Definitely a worthwhile encounter if your Abra runs away and you want a special attacking psychic type without giving up on Gallade.
Vaporeon: The internet sensation doesn’t get a good water move until Brine after Crasher Wake, but once it gets rolling, it becomes a reliable wall on par with hit takers like Empoleon and Snorlax. Water Absorb is great for pivoting and STAB Surf hits hard, but it lacks the amount of resistances and coverage that Empoleon has to make it a solid counter into more threats.
Tentacruel: You pick up Squidward relatively late into the game, but once you get it, the only poor matchups that it has are against Volkner and Lucian. Outside of those two, Tentacruel can fill any offensive or defensive role on your team as a great abuser of Choice Specs and Black Sludge. It would have been much higher if it was available earlier.
Gastrodon: Definitely a candidate for the “Most Improved” Pokémon throughout the entire game. After an abysmal start as a Shellos in the second and third splits, Gastrodon bounces back against Maylene and Byron until falling off against Candice. It earns this placement by learning Recover before the Elite Four and performing well against important matchups like Bertha, Flint, and Cynthia.
Quagsire: A good alternative to Gastrodon that performs better against Maylene, Wake, and Volkner, but does worse in the Elite Four due to a lack of reliable recovery. Water Absorb is a great advantage over the slug that makes it my preferred WateGround of choice until the Elite Four.
Staraptor: An amazing raw damage dealer with the best coverage option it could ever ask for in Close Combat. Intimidate is the cherry on top that lets it contribute in fights that may otherwise be difficult for it. STAB Return on Starly and Staravia is also the perfect tool for muscling through random trainers in the early game.
Mamoswine: Definitely one of the best Pokémon in the late game. Too bad that it is only available in the late game, so it gets to stay in the A-Tier. It hits like a truck and is just fast enough to outspeed most threats. Faster foes get picked off by Ice Shard, including Cynthia’s Garchomp.
Altaria (-): In my opinion, this is the most underrated Pokémon in the game. Yes, it involves using up valuable resources such as your Earthquake and Roost TMs to unlock its full potential, but it’s definitely worth it. With a moveset of Earthquake, Dragon Claw, Roost, and Dragon Dance (learned at level 39), this thing sweeps Byron, Volkner, Aaron, Bertha, Flint, Lucian (with good RNG), and most notably, Cynthia. It can also put in work against Cyrus’ teams and in the Spear Pillar double battle with its respectable bulk and Dragon STAB. Natural Cure also makes it a fantastic sponge for status moves, giving it a defensive niche. It is held back by a mediocre attack stat, late availability, and poor Candice matchup.
Probopass (-): Another Pokémon that deserves far more credit than it gets. It is the best Pokémon during the Fantina split which is one of the hardest portions of the game. You can evolve it right away and it has titanic defences that pair wonderfully with its numerous resistances. Power Gem and Thunderbolt are good attacking options and Thunder Wave and Toxic are great for stalling and support. It has its ups and downs throughout the game and is held back from being even higher due to its quadruple weaknesses and poor performance in the Elite Four.
Steelix (-): Like Probopass, it is one of the best early and mid game walls, completely stuffing Roark, Mars, Jupiter, Byron, Cyrus’ Crobat and Weavile, and Aaron. It has great stats for being available before the second gym and is a great candidate for the Earthquake and Dig TMs you get early on. Like Probopass, it performs poorly during the Elite Four due to its subpar attack stat, poor special bulk, and abysmal speed.
Crobat (-): The poster child in this game for starting off great and falling off. Crobat dominates all of the Gardenia, Fantina, and Maylene splits with its typing and dark type coverage, making it the best Pokémon in the early game in my opinion. However, after decent performances in the Wake and Byron splits, Crobat’s performance falls off a cliff due to its poor learnset, lackluster offences, and only decent bulk. U-Turn is always a great option and Black Sludge synergizes well with STAB Fly, but Crobat doesn’t do enough damage to keep up with the competition.
Magnezone (-): A great Pokémon due to its record high twelve resistances, good bulk, and outstanding power. While these are all amazing traits, they don’t completely overshadow the fact that it is obtainable after getting Surf, has poor speed, limited coverage, and outright loses to half of the Elite Four members. Definitely great, but it isn’t the all encompassing tank that can be used everywhere like what some people say.
Lucario (-): This Pokémon is overrated. It has its good traits such as sweeping Byron and Candice, abusing Choice Specs with STAB Aura Sphere, and having great priority in Extreme Speed, but it outright loses to Bertha, Flint, and Lucian. With Light Screen support, it can potentially sweep Cynthia with Swords Dance, Close Combat, Extreme Speed, and a fourth move that hits Spiritomb, but this is unreliable. Obviously still a great encounter since it’s guaranteed and has good offensive stats, but nowhere near as amazing as a lot of people say it is.
Jolteon (-): Unironically the worst encounter for the Fantina split (if you evolve it) because it literally cannot touch Ghosts at that point of the game. After you get the Thunderbolt TM and Choice Specs, you’ve unlocked the electric type version of Alakazam. Having a strong, fast Thunderbolt for fights like Wake, Cyrus, and the Elite Four can be a game changer. Volt Absorb also makes it great for pivoting against electric attacks.
Torterra (-): Oh boy, time to make people angry with my opinions. Let me just get this over with by saying that I think this is one of the most overrated encounters in the game. I was very tempted to put it in the B-Tier, but kept it at the bottom of the A-Tier solely because of how well it does in the early game. Speaking of the early game, Turtwig and Grotle are great against the first three splits with Razor Leaf shredding through Roark, Grotle tanking hits from Mars’ Purugly and Gardenia’s Roserade, and Bite being a great weapon against Fantina. Once it evolves, it gets access to Earthquake early on without needing a TM, letting it easily beat Maylene’s Lucario. However, it then begins to fall off hard in a Crobat-esque fashion. Neutrality to water and a quadruple ice weakness make it decent at best against Wake, it’s an absolute liability in all three Cyrus fights, gets destroyed by Candice, fails to do anything in the Spear Pillar double battle, loses to Aaron, can’t sweep against Bertha due to relying on Wood Hammer for STAB (unless you want to give up a valuable move slot for Giga Drain), performs poorly against Lucian due to its poor speed and middling special bulk, and is shaky at best against Cynthia. Even in fights it should win like Byron, Torterra is unable to tank Flash Cannons well against the lead Magneton, fails to oneshot Steelix without a Swords Dance boost, and gets killed in return by Ice Fang. Against Volkner, it needs both Swords Dance and Rock Polish to outspeed and oneshot the Luxray reliably without getting OHKO’d itself by Ice Fang. Finally, against Flint, you need an Occa Berry (which is given to you at random from a daily event) to even attempt sweeping with Rock Polish and even then, the strategy risks burns and a crit from the lead Houndoom’s Flamethrower. Torterra has a hard time contributing much in the late game and performs poorly in three of the most difficult splits of the game (Candice, Volkner, Elite Four). Argue with this placement all you want, but boot up the game yourself and try using Torterra for the final three splits of the game. It isn’t fun and relies a lot on RNG.
Milotic (-): A better Vaporeon that you can pick up after reaching the basement of Mount Coronet. It’s lower than the other bulky waters because it’s encountered even later than Tentacruel and lacks offensive coverage outside of Ice Beam. Access to Recover with great stats make it a good late game wall.
Drapion (-): This encounter just barely meets the minimum standard of performance to qualify for the A-Tier. Min-maxed stats, great bulk, set-up potential with Swords Dance, good coverage, great typing, and crit immunity with Battle Armor are all outstanding traits — that you only get access to after level 40. Before that, Skorupi is useless and Drapion itself doesn’t perform at its best until the Volkner and Elite Four splits.
B-Tier (34-59)
Giratina (+): This thing’s performance somewhat mirrors that of Mamoswine if it was obtained even later and dominated the Elite Four even harder. Giratina, alongside Garchomp and Gyarados, achieved the prestigious SS-Rank for the Elite Four split for being ridiculously bulky, hitting hard, and having a great typing offensively and defensively. It’s held back severely by its availability so it sits at the very top of the B-Tier.
Floatzel (+): Buizel suffers from being frail and weak but once it evolves, it learns Crunch right away to be a perfect answer against Fantina. After that, Floatzel is the fastest water type available, letting it act as a great lead against frailer threats like Cyrus’ Houndoom and Candice’s Sneasel by outspeeding and oneshotting them. While it performs decently throughout the whole game, it doesn’t stand out in any fights aside from Fantina, making it a perfect gatekeeper of the higher tiers.
Whiscash (+): The ugly duckling of the WateGround trio clearly got the short end of the stick. It lacks the reliable recovery that makes Gastrodon so good in the Elite Four and the additional immunity provided by Water Absorb that benefits Quagsire. What you’re left with is the inferior version of the archetype that doesn’t distinguish itself in any way. Even so, having this typing as well as passable stats is good enough to sneak in the upper echelon of the B-Tier.
Spiritomb (+): This mon is weird to rank. On one hand, it provides three crucial immunities to Psychic, Normal, and Fighting, bullies Maylene with said immunities and Psychic, beats Lucian’s entire team with ghost coverage and strong super-effective priority, and performs admirably in the Candice and Elite Four splits. On the other hand, it doesn’t do too well against Cyrus, relies on Sucker Punch and Will-O-Wisp often which is unreliable, and competes for an encounter with Bllissey. All of these balance out to this placement in B-Tier.
Bastiodon (+): Probopass’ little brother is a tier below its fellow Rock/Steel type due to having a significantly worse early game. Shieldon is useless and performs poorly in both the Gardenia and Fantina splits while only being marginally useful as a wall against Jupiter’s Skuntank. Once it evolves, Bastiodon becomes a worse version of Probopass with lower special bulk and special attack. This means that it performs great in the mid game and in the Candice and Volkner splits, but poorly once again in the Elite Four.
Porygon-Z (+): The tactical nuke spends most of its time as a Porygon2 which serves as a decent tank with bolt-beam coverage that lets it check a few prominent threats. Once it evolves, it becomes one of the hardest hitting Pokémon in the entire game, with Adaptability boosted Hyper Beam being a fantastic finishing weapon against any boss’ final Pokémon. It is slightly let down by not having fire coverage and learning Tri-Attack after the eighth gym.
Froslass (+): My go-to ice type of choice for the Elite Four. Bolt-beam coverage with ghost STAB and Choice Specs is incredible for the final gauntlett of the game and this is further backed up by Froslass’ speed stat which lets it easily outrun Cynthia’s Garchomp. Froslass is also great against Cyrus, Bertha, and Lucian, making it more than just a Garchomp “counter” like other ice types.
Weavile (+): Fantastic offensive stats and typing for the last two splits, but can have a hard time pivoting in without U-Turn support or a sacrifice. Swords Dance lets it sweep through Bertha and Lucian while STAB Ice Punch is a great weapon against prominent ice-weak threats like Cyrus’ Honchkrow and Cynthia’s Garchomp. Just be careful when using it because its STABs have unimpressive base power.
Azelf: One of the best Pokémon to use in the Elite Four. Its mixed offences and speed are high enough to put Infernape to shame and Explosion in conjunction with Levitate make it the most reliable Garchomp check in the entire game. Having access to a strong STAB Psychic, Flamethrower, Stealth Rock, U-Turn, and the aforementioned Boom let it contribute to every Elite Four fight. Too bad that it’s only available for Volkner and the Elite Four.
Luxray: 50% of the time, you get a reliable Intimidate user that also serves as a decent electric type attacker. The other 50% of the time, you get a blatant sexist that has unreliable damage output against a variety of fights. Luxray has standout performances against Wake and Cyrus, but is only decent at best into the other major bosses. It suffers from a lack of good physical STAB and coverage options outside of Crunch. Seriously, why is Spark its best physical electric attack?
Raichu: Unironically one of the best encounters for sweeping Crasher Wake due to its access to Grass Knot. Outside of that one fight (and Bertha too I guess if you’re crazy enough to bring it to the Elite Four), it’s an inferior version of Jolteon. At least being a worse Jolteon makes you naturally good against Cyrus and Aaron.
Rotom: Not having access to the appliances is a real bummer for Rotom. This thing feels like a waste of a fantastic defensive typing backed up with Levitate to remove that ground weakness. Rotom suffers from poor bulk while not exactly being a fantastic special attacker in its own right.
Machamp: On paper, this looks like a great tank that should merit a much higher placement due to the combination of No Guard and Dynamic Punch (the same combination that got it banned from competitive play in Gen 4). In practice, Machamp doesn’t learn Dynamic Punch until the very end of the game and its combination of a bad defensive typing, poor speed, and only decent bulk make it difficult for it to reliably score KO’s without risking status effects or crits. Machamp is great against Candice with No Guard, but I’d recommend holding a Papaya Berry to play around crits from Froslass’ Psychic.
Toxicroak: Dry Skin and Swords Dance make it one of the best Pokémon in the game at sweeping Wake, but no Cross Chop or Close Combat via level up means that this thing has to rely on Brick Break as its fighting STAB. After fantastic performances against Wake and Byron, it's only decent for the rest of the game.
Magmortar: By the time you get this thing, it has two amazing performances off the bat against Byron and Candice respectively and holds its own quite well during the Volkner split. The real issue with this thing is the Elite Four. Base 83 speed with poor bulk and pure fire typing leave it outsped and oneshot by several late game threats and despite hitting hard, it doesn’t quite oneshot many of the opponents that threaten to kill it in return.
Lickilicky: People hate on this thing too much just because they don’t like its design. Lickilicky is a serviceable tank with decent offensive stats, good bulk, and great coverage that lets it hit most opponents super-effectively. This thing also has the strongest Explosion in the game, guaranteeing that it annihilates any non ghost target during its final stand. Its poor speed and lack of resistances prevent it from moving higher up the list, but the aforementioned good qualities let it be a consistent B-Tier pick throughout most of the game.
Clefable: Compared to Lickilicky, it has less bulk, worse mixed offences, and less coverage, but greater utility with Encore and reliable healing with Moonlight. Both are interchangeable in my opinion.
Golem: The quintessential early game wall for new players. Geodude is fantastic against Roark, is one of the best answers to Mars’ Purugly, and does similarly well against Jupiter’s Skuntank. The only problem with this line is that it is inconsistent throughout the run. For every good matchup like Byron and Volkner, you get bad matchups like Wake and Candice, so it all averages out to a B-Tier placement.
Hippowdon: On paper, this is straight up an upgrade compared to Golem and for the most part, that is true. However, where Hippo falls short is actually with its ability and evolution level. By the time you fully evolve, the only great matchups left for it to take on are Byron, Volkner, and Flint. Hippo does well against other fights due to how bulky it is, but bringing it to longer fights such as the Spear Pillar double battle and the Elite Four runs the risk of exposing other teammates to Hippo’s sandstorm, which can make pivoting more difficult. Sand is helpful for chipping at enemy health and determining speed advantages, but provides little benefit outside of that unless you are running rock types alongside Hippo.
Rhyperior: Basically a Mega Golem that you use in the late game of a nuzlocke. Its huge physical stats are hard to ignore when building an Elite Four team and it does very well in the Volkner split leading up to it. Unfortunately, Rhyhorn is complete dead weight and its level up learnset is horrible until the late game.
Dusknoir: Great Dusk is a serviceable wall that can stay relatively healthy with Pain Split or Rest, cripple targets with Will-O-Wisp, and dish out decent damage with priority Shadow Sneak and Shadow Punch. Its physical STABs leave a lot to be desired, which make it a bit passive, but has good coverage options such as Earthquake, Fire Punch, Brick Break, Thunder Punch, and \inhales deeply** ICE PUNCH. Memes aside, Dusknoir is a serviceable tank in the late game with some decent utility. It doesn’t particularly shine during any point in the game though.
Porygon2 (-): Remember everything I said about Lickilicky and Clefable? It’s all of that, but includes having marginally better stats, no Explosion or Encore, and no fire coverage. The last one is what really brings P2 down. Fire coverage gives the other two better matchups into Byron, all Commander fights, and Aaron, making them that much more versatile. The difference isn’t huge, but it is noticeable.
Medicham (-): This thing is in a similar situation to Toxicroak where it has to rely on the Brick Break TM for reliable STAB. Pure Power is a great ability, but a lack of set up, more limited coverage, and bad psychic STABs make it entirely inferior to Gallade. Unlike Toxicroak or Machamp which both have standout performances to help differentiate themselves, Medicham finds itself struggling to stand out even in splits before Gallade is accessible. Even so, a budget Gallade is good enough to be a B-Tier Pokémon and Medicham still has its merits.
Drifblim (-): Another Crobat/Torterra situation where a Pokémon starts off great but falls off later on, but Drifblim’s highs are nowhere near as good. Three immunities is amazing, but poor coverage, middling bulk, and mediocre offences hold it back significantly in the late game. Poor matchups into Byron, Candice, Cyrus, and Volkner don’t help matters either.
Pelipper (-): Yet another case of a Pokémon starting off strong, but falling off. Pelipper’s access to Roost via level up is amazing since it doesn’t need to waste the TM, but after Byron, its days of walling opponents are over. It’s too passive, has little to no coverage, is too slow, and straight up loses to too many late game fights without even getting the opportunity to contribute much at all. Dunking on all three of Maylene, Wake, and Byron isn’t too bad of a feat though.
Umbreon (-): Probably the most overrated wall in the game. In the previous tier list, people brought up Sand-Attack being a major selling point of Umbreon which is just sad. It doesn’t get any recovery outside of Rest, is useless against Fantina for the same reasons as Jolteon, gets beaten up by Maylene, and then goes on to only perform decently against the rest of the splits that it supposedly “walls”. Toxic stalling with it does work against certain threats and it is one of the better answers into Lucian, so it just barely sneaks into the B-Tier.
C-Tier (60-86) (I’m running out of characters and these Pokémon are less interesting, so analyses may be more vague)
Kadabra (+): Much worse than the other psychics due to its lower stats. When a Pokémon’s coverage is as scarce as Kadabra’s you’d really wish that its main attacking move could oneshot more than it actually does. Kadabra lacks the raw power that the other psychics above it have to muscle through opposing teams even with Choice Specs available. Due to this and the widespread usage of Sucker Punch, it isn’t viable in the late game.
Haunter (+): Diet Gengar that is noticeably weaker and significantly slower. The lower speed really hurts it against fights like Cyrus, Volkner, Lucian, and Cynthia where Gengar gets a lot of mileage due to its amazing speed.
Octillery (+): Being a water type with access to usable fire coverage sounds cool on paper until you realize that this thing has Infernape levels of bulk and Golem tier speed. Cool for the mid game, but not in the late game where opponents get stronger movesets.
Golduck (+): A bland water type that does great against Roark, Byron, and Bertha as all waters do while being mediocre against everything else as most mediocre waters also do. The late evolution level hurts it a lot in the early game where team building is much more limited.
Azumarill (+): Huge Power is a great ability, but it’s completely wasted on Azumarill in this game because it doesn’t learn Aqua Jet and lacks the Fairy typing that makes it so good later on.
Scyther (+): This performance surprised me due to how poor it was, but looking back at it, this mon is severely held back by its typing. Bug/Flying is absolutely horrendous in these games and Scyther really suffers from it, especially in the Byron, Candice, and Volkner splits.
Uxie (+): A bulky psychic type with some nice utility that you can pick up right after beating Cyrus. Yawn and U-Turn alongside screens make it a fantastic supporting option for the Elite Four.
Electivire (+): Just like in competitive play, people love to overrate this thing. It has great stats and coverage, but it’s literally given to you later than Giratina itself. EVire is a great option for Volkner and the Elite Four and would have been a strong candidate for the A-Tier if it was available earlier, but as it stands, it’s too late to warrant a higher placement.
Roserade: Probably the Pokémon that suffers the most from its typing. Grass is one of the worst typings in Sinnoh and Roserade suffers as a result. Getting destroyed by Candice, Cyrus, Aaron, Flint, and Lucian completely overrule any good start that it may have had against Roark and Gardenia.
Tangrowth: Another great Pokémon ruined by its typing (starting to see a theme with this tier?). Amazing physical bulk lets it easily sweep Wake, but after that, even with Earthquake coverage, it struggles to contribute to any fights outside of Byron, Volkner, and Bertha.
Graveler: A Golem with worse stats. So just a Golem that falls off even quicker. Enough said.
Rhydon: A slightly better Golem that is useless until the Volkner split. It does well in said split which is great, but that’s about all it does.
Wormadam Trash: Does surprisingly well in the early game against Gardenia and Fantina due to its typing, but falls off shortly after. It bounces back once more against Candice, but then retires for real afterwards. For a Pokémon with “trash” in its name, it’s not too shabby.
Dusclops: Dusknoir but it remains passive throughout the entire game and has slightly less bulk. Still has good utility and walling potential which saves it from the D-Tier.
Flareon: The Luxray of fire types. This thing not learning Flare Blitz is a crime and having to rely on Fire Fang for stab is pitiful. It does have great matchups against Byron and Candice and is a reliable Lucario counter for Maylene.
Rapidash: The definition of a mediocre fire type. It is really let down by its late evolution level and despite being one of the earliest encounters, the only early game fight that it does well in is against Gardenia. It has the same winning matchups as Flareon, but is much worse into Maylene as a result of not yet being fully evolved during the fight.
Magmar: The best of these three fire types but unfortunately the latest one you get. It has good coverage and decent stats, but is catchable too late for it to differentiate itself more from the rest of its competition.
Girafarig: A Kadabra with worse stats, partial normal typing, and access to Thunderbolt. It does decently enough against Maylene and Wake, but fades into mediocrity afterwards.
Ambipom: Technician Aerial Ace is surprisingly decent into Maylene and Baton Pass strats are definitely viable, but this thing has the unfortunate combination of not hitting hard enough and being too frail to land a hit. Just a mediocre performer throughout the entire run.
Lopunny: STAB Return on a fully evolved mon before the second gym sounds appealing, but Lopunny’s stats are just too low for it to truly abuse this. Like Ambipom, it maintains a mediocre performance throughout most of the run and is just a worse version due to how weak its damage output is.
Vespiquen (-): This Pokémon has legitimately good traits in Heal Order, early Power Gem, and slow U-Turn. However, this is all gone to waste because of that terrible Bug/Flying typing. Despite having a good start, this thing completely fumbles after the Wake split.
Bibarel (-): Sinnoh does this thing so dirty. It evolves one level after Roark’s gym, making it bad there, becomes a water type against Gardenia, doesn’t learn Bite via level up to deal with Fantina, gets beaten up by Maylene, and finally wins its first matchup against Byron. Just a poorly designed Pokémon gameplay wise that was done dirty by Gamefreak.
Machoke (-): A weaker Machamp, meaning that it’s even harder to secure KO’s with and switch it in safely. Why are trade evolutions a thing?
Mr. Mime (-): A mediocre psychic type available right before the sixth gym. Sounds like a recipe for failure. I guess Thunderbolt and Screens let it be helpful against some fights.
Yanmega (-): Perhaps the Pokémon done the dirtiest by its typing and especially level up learnset. No Bug Buzz and Air Slash until the late game is a crime and completely wastes what would have otherwise been an amazing Specs user due to Tinted Lens.
Absol (-): Available super late and only provides benefits against Lucian with the strongest Sucker Punch in the game. A niche is a niche I guess, and Lucian is a hard fight if you’re unprepared.
Mesprit (-): A frailer Uxie that hits slightly harder and loses Yawn in favour of ice coverage. Yawn is too valuable to give up and losing that extra bulk makes it less reliable than Uxie as a whole.
And that concludes my rundown on all of the encounters in this game that I would consider viable for your Nuzlocke. If you want to read what I have to say about the other "less fortunate" encounters, the rest of the post will be in the comments.
