Shriek: Cacodemon by D.C. Josiah (Paranormal)

2025.02.01 23:41 DCjosiahwriter Shriek: Cacodemon by D.C. Josiah (Paranormal)

“Well that led nowhere” I said to Billy, my investigative partner as we just left a site with no results, a full 10 hour investigation of a so-called “Haunted” church . We first received information on the site about a month ago and we were excited to finally make our way to this side of the country. It took a month of planning and research before we even headed to the site and to get no results was very upsetting. Billy and I have worked together for just over a year now trying to get proof of the paranormal, and all we have discovered is a few EVPs and a couple of shadows . We met just over a year ago in a paranormal sub reddit and found out that we lived in the same area , so naturally being intrigued in the paranormal we came to the conclusion that we should investigate different haunted sites together and document them. We planned out over the phone how we would go about doing this by renting certain equipment and even taking out a loan for a work van to make travel easier on both of us , because in our country cars aren’t prevalent and you would be lucky to have access to one.

Our first expedition was to an abandoned mental hospital that my uncle actually lived in at one point before I was born , according to my Father . We had to sneak into the premises and most of our night was spent talking to ourselves in the dark. We captured nothing on our night vision cams and no EVPs, but we did hear things crash and bang in the large abandoned building which made our night there somewhat worth it. It was our first time investigating together and Billy and I really hit it off, as it seemed we were both in it to capture proof of the paranormal . My Father thought it’d be foolish to even attempt , but we had already rented the proper equipment and took out the loan for the van so there was nothing stopping us. After the investigation and going over footage and recording at my place it sure felt like a waste of time , but our curiosity in the paranormal was still at an all-time high since all we had to do is capture one piece of proof and that would put an end to our families skepticism in us and the paranormal.

We always knew they were out there, it was just a matter of where , over the year we visited 10 different sites with little to no proof , but we did catch an EVP that made my Father question himself . That was on investigation 5 which made us research and visit 5 more sites. Just like me , Billy was still heavily driven to find solidified proof , and we would get closer than we ever would after Billy and I decided to go to the west-end of the country . “Man this place is beautiful” said Billy as he stuffed his face with a carne asana taco , “ It sure is isn’t it” I responded, we had stopped at an outside villa café on the main road leading to the west-end of this town, kind of in the middle of nowhere was 6 or 7 buildings with a gift shop , restaurants , and grocery carts, all was oddly placed. While enjoying our lunch we see an older man in tattered clothing with no shoes on approaching the restaurant , “So sad” Billy says with a full mouth, “ What?” I ask , “The man”, “What man?” “ The one standing right behind you.” “Ahh!” I shriek as now the old man is standing behind my white low back chair, “Can I help you sir?” “ Yes you can, you young men are explorers right?”,”Well more like investigators” I explain, “ Well if you were explorers I would advise you to head to the Caco houses , but if that doesn't interest you…” “WAIT , Caco? Like CacoDemon?” I interrupt ,” Oh so you are explorers then?” The old man responds, “YES YES WE ARE, where are these houses?” I quickly ask, “Just up the road , you won't miss them” He exclaims, I then turn to Billy who is slowly chewing his food, “Dude Caco? , CacoDemon, you’ve never heard of that name before?” I desperately ask, “Nah bro , but we should check it out” He says while he eyes the plate of tacos.”Thank you sir.” I say as I turn around but the man is no longer there, it’s like he just disappeared. I looked ahead of us and behind but no old man, “Where’d he go Billy?” Billy just shrugs and now I am annoyed that Billy wasn’t adept to the word or knew where the old man went. “ We're going tonight.” I declare.

We gathered up our gear right before the sunset and headed back down the road we had the encounter with the strange old man. I don’t know how I knew ,but I knew we’d find something, anything, just based off of our encounter, I’m not sure Billy knew ,but it was like the universe was speaking to me and telling me that we will find something big.The road was about 3 miles long and at the end of the main road was a 2 story gated house , you literally could not miss it, we parked by the road , packed our equipment and looked for a way in. The front gate looked like it was chain locked up , but after further observation I noticed that the lock wasn’t even in place and you could remove the chain links , it was dummy locked. This should’ve been our first red flag , the fact that nobody bothered to lock it back, but we saw it as a sign so we went right ahead. It was about a 50 yard walk to the front door, as we approached we noticed that the front door was cracked and you could see the darkness inside, what we also noticed was that a strong cold draft was bursting out of the door. If we didn’t know better it would seem like air condition blowing full blast, and as we both felt it we both looked at each other , waiting for one another to take the lead , it was like a warning or a portal , so we decide to flip for it, “Call it in the air” “ Tails!” I responded…heads. I never really had the best luck in life, so now it looks like I’m going in first, I then gently push the door open and it lets out a loud creak that echoes through the entire house. I advance through the doors with Billy close behind , all we hear is our hard nervous breathing as we make our way inside. With the sun going down , there was no proper lighting so all we saw were two massive staircases , one on the left and one on the right , and straight ahead was straight darkness , which appeared as if there were no back windows to let even the slightest bit of light in. “It’s dark as shit in here” I mutter as I pull out a flashlight and turn it on to begin to examine the darkness of the house , we walk forward to try to look for any back door or windows, only to see though the flashlight beam that the back windows were boarded up and covered with graffiti . It was very chilling , one word that stuck out on the boards sprayed out like blood splatter spelled out,”HELP”. “Well then” Billy says as we spot it at the same time, “ Alright it will be dark soon , let's setup at the front door so we can find our way back.” We turn around and head back the way we came, only to find that we are now walking down a hallway, “What the fuck!, we just walked straight, we made no turns” Billy said manically , “ What the fuck bro..” I replied back. “ Okay then we set up here , wherever we are”, only a few minutes had passed and we were already lost in this house, “Lets just setup bro we can mark our spot with our trackers and find our way back in the morning.” I suggest , “Fuck man what kind of house is this?!?!” Billy said worriedly , “ CALM DOWN BRO, we’re still together and we have trackers, we just have to last until we find a way out.” He takes big deep breaths in and out ,in and out , in and out “ Okay, let's do this.”

We get started with setting our home base equipment up by taping an X to the floor with a tracker attached and set up our first tripod camera that is night vision capable and has a built in EVP device , as we are setting it up we hear loud demanding footsteps right above us, mind you , we haven’t even been upstairs to even check , so for us to hear this at our first X was very unsettling. We quickly finish setting up the camera and a quick technical check to see if its recording, we then pull out the bigger flash lights out of our backpacks and set them down , one facing the hallway and the other facing our 2 camping sized backpacks so we can unpack the recorders and grab the other cameras to record and to search for our next spot. “Alright … we need to find the stairs “ I said “ Well they were straight back the way we came , but now there is somehow a big ass hallway there, let's go down it and try to find them “ Said Billy , we begin down the hallway with large flashlights in hand. Our big lights have about 20 yards of range so we can see what looks like an entrance of some sort , it's about a 30 yard hallway and our flashlights are just good enough to beam a little light at the end, when we hear the demanding footsteps again but this time on the porcelain floor we were standing on , the steps startle us and we turn to look behind us , when we turn back, we see a shadow man crossing the entrance. We are now frozen in our tracks , in the middle of this long hallway and we just saw a full shadow walk by just in front of us . “Oh shit , holy shit!” Billy lets out, “ Dude we need to document this.” “ Fuck that man , we need to get out of here” “ What are we here for dude, we came to capture this, now buck up.” I then take a knee and remove my giant back pack and pull out our main camera, Billy does the same, “ Lights off.” I say slowly as now we can see everything on our 2 main night vision cameras.

We now have officially started our active investigation , we are walking towards the entrance slowly, closely watching the LCD screens on our night vision cameras as we approach, when we walk through we realize that we are behind the left staircase that we saw when we first walked in , “What the hell , we are back where we started .” We then quickly walk towards the front door, it's shut and chained up like we didn’t just walk through the front with no resistance, “ We didn’t even close the door behind us, what kind of shit is this, HELLO? HELLO? ANYBODY IN HERE?” Billy screams, “And how did we end up down the hall, we walked through the middle” He whispers closely to me, “ I don’t even know” I reply . “Fuck it , lets setup a X and a cam” I suggest , we immediately get to work and attach a tracker, set up a tripod cam , and now we have our exit X . Now that we have our exit marked we feel a sense of comfort, so we decide to begin hunting as we like to call it , we set our big back packs down and pull out our extra recording devices and we head upstairs, we get to the top of the staircase and at the top where the floor is now carpet of some sort, almost like felt . “ Are there any spirits in here, do you guys want us here?” I ask as I hold the EVP recording device in the air, no reply, we walk further down the long hallway, and we can see there are over 5 rooms lined up on the wall, “ Big House” I say , I point my camera in the closest room to my right as I look on my LCD screen, and I see something pass by on the screen, "Whoa ,what was that?” I exclaim, I quickly pull back the camera and run the tape back. As I run the tape back and look for the figure, a loud growl sneaks up behind us, the growl was so loud it made both of us jump and start running straight to the end of the long upstairs hallway. We run and run but it seems the hallway gets longer as we run. I'm huffing and puffing because there is no way we have been running that long. I then stop to look behind me only to see that there is nothing, and no sign of Billy either, “Billy? Billy?” I whisper trying to keep it down in the dark. I get no response ,and after a few minutes I realize that there is no one else there, “What the hell?, let me call him”, the dial tone rings and then I hear him pick up, “Hello?” , “ Billy where are you?!?”, “I’m back at the hotel, where are you? You said you’d be right back” I hear Billy say as the phone goes dead. Wait , so who have I been talking to this whole time?

After discovering the mind boggling fact that I’ve been talking to myself , I realize that Billy was never with me , I had to sneak in the back gate to get into the building from the side, that’s why the front was barricaded, and the interaction with the old man never occurred how I thought it did, as I recollect, the old man just asked for money to eat , and I told Billy I was going out ,and left the hotel room, taking the van , he probably thought I was going clubbing or something. I am now in this mysterious house with no way to find my way back because the whole time , Billy was supposed to be holding the Ipad with the camera tracker locations pinged , but now I am in straight darkness with a LCD light as my only source of light. I try not to panic , but now I need to find the way I came in, I lightly jog through the long dark hallway to find the stairs , I then hear what sounds like harmonic humming up ahead and I follow the humming I eventually hit the middle top of the staircase and hear multiple hums coming from down below, I look down to the bottom . What I see when I look down is a group of 5 in all black holding hands circled around a burning pentagram , I quickly stop in my tracks which they all at once look to the top of the stairs and I hear one singular older woman’s voice say,” Brothers and sisters , our new vessel,” “ Vessel?” I say to myself , as a strong pair of hands grabs my arms viciously and replies , “Yes, our new vessel for the Cacodemon.”

2025.02.01 23:41 cgood_dingdong i'm starting a vlog to track my DJ journey and my progression to try to make this a career

Hey everyone,
Firstly, long time first time. Thank you to everyone in this community for your knowledge and insight into everything under the sun, I have grown so much from keeping tabs on this subreddit. Just wanted to share my first episode in a vlog series I'm starting to track my progress trying to make a career out of house music and also to double as an "art piece" depicting the struggles and triumphs an artist faces throughout their journey. I feel like I'm starting to get a little bit of headway but still a long way to go to where I want to be at.
Another complaint of mine is that the "DJ vlogs" that are out right now (Summit, Stussy, my lord and savior James Hype, etc) only seem to show the high points? Like alot of their vlogs are just "I had a sick set" and a bunch of montage footage but I just thought it would be cool if one of them started tracking their progress from the "local" level and we could see what they did to get there. Not saying I'm those guys by any means, I would give my left kidney to become James Hype because I truly love him so much.
bs aside, here's the link for anyone interested in checking it out, would love any feedback on the premise or any ideas you may like to see for this project. Thank you all for the time, I'm going back to my role as viewer now <3

2025.02.01 23:41 Dazzling_Macaron8439 Disappointed

Grabbed the x4 in the Costco bundle and then bought a dive case for it. Dive case dinged and scratched first time using it so easily which leads to artifacts in the video. in general underwater videos are not clear and crisp even when filming in 8k. I use it in Maui off the side of a raft to film whales underwater but my old go pro videos look clearer than my insta360. Maybe I have settings wrong but disappointed for the price, only nice part is the 360 so I capture more of the whale without having to move the camera.

I matched with a very pretty girl on hinge, she’s in town visiting her brother. Wanted to take her out to dinner and she agreed, invited her to my place to meet a few friends and their girlfriends before dinner, was not received well. I honestly just thought she’d might like to meet some people in the town her brother lives in, which she admitted she knows nobody in. Could’ve been communicated better, and I honestly might be the asshole for the ending, but thought the whole conversation was just weird

2025.02.01 23:41 M1chaelLanz Unqualified Space | Chapter 22

A sudden change of plans was not uncommon in the United Galactic Planets Navy. The crew was expected to take new orders in stride, but the effect on morale was not negligible. Captain Tarkey had the tough task of telling everyone their vacation was over and to report back to the ship. She knew most would be displeased, so she offered to double their shore leave time at their next port. It was a kind gesture, but Captain Tarkey was in an exceedingly good mood after her wonderful date. She wasn't the only one. Officer Kurney was too.
“My sweet, sweet, angel. You have no idea how long I have dreamt of seeing you again,” Kurney said, holding his sweetheart in his hands. “Xavier, be useful and find her a place to sit.”
Xavier shuddered and a bottle of green liquid fell from the shelf. Officer Kurney was quick to place his sweetheart on his desk, freeing his hands to catch the falling bottle. The bottle tapped the floor, but Officer Kurney’s gentle hands slowed it down enough to stop it from cracking.
“Xavier, how could you? This is a Finenkle. From one of the first barrels on Tarnik. It is priceless.”
Xavier responded by sucking up his “sweetheart” on the desk and placing her on the shelf where the bottle of Finenkle was. It wobbled on the shelf, showing an unusual lack of care for Officer Kurney's liquor.
“This is not like you. What’s wrong?”
Xavier said nothing, giving him the silent treatment. Even if Xavier could speak, he didn't have to. Officer Kurney had known Xavier long enough to know why he would act up.
“This is about the stain. Isn't it?”
Xavier made a defiant crunch from one of his internal gears. It was his best attempt at a hrumpf.
Officer Kurney put the bottle in his hand on the desk. His placement was apologetic, prefacing his next words. “I'm sorry, little buddy. They ran out…”
A faint dejected whirl came from behind the shelf. Officer Kurney rounded his desk and opened the last crate. What he pulled out was not the last of his alcohol shipment, but instead a small bucket of stain.
“Because I bought the last of it!” Officer Kurney exclaimed, holding up a new brush as well.
Showcase lights above the individual shelves lit up and Xavier replaced the bottle of Finenkle on his desk with a champagne bottle and accompanied glass.
“And you thought I would forget about you.” Officer Kurney stroked the wood with the bare brush. The bristles moving down the wood dimmed the shelf lights. “No, I was just saving the best for last.”
Officer Kurney was on the brink of popping the lid off the stain when someone rapped on the door.
“Who is it?” he asked.
“Lisa.”
“Sorry buddy, I gotta handle this first. Then we get you all pretty,” Officer Kurney said and waved the door open.
She came right in, dressed in her normal uniform. There were answers she needed, but her first question was definitely impromptu.
“Why are you holding a brush?” Lisa asked.
“That is my business,” he said, pointing it at her. “Why are you here?”
“I heard Lotan was arrested.”
“You heard correctly.”
“For what?”
“He was the spy we were looking for.”
Lisa’s eyes darted back and forth, deep in thought. She thought back to her interactions with him. None of them were good, but neither were they the work of some master sleuth. He was woefully incompetent at proving she was a slacker at work. It was almost one of her favorite things about him. His comical failures, which all the more reinforced her belief Lotan could not be a spy, no matter how annoying he was.
“That can't be.”
“Why not?”
“Because he is insufferable.”
Officer Kurney set down the brush and poured himself a glass. “I'm confused. That's why he can't be a spy?”
“When was the last time a spy was someone people hated?” Lisa argued, crossed her arms.
“No one hates Lotan…well…now some people might.”
“He was always trying to get me in trouble and failed every time. Nobody that inept at bringing information to people is a spy.”
“What kind of trouble were you in?” Officer Kurney’s eyebrows raised, more intrigued by the drink in his hand than her near admission of avoiding work.
“Nothing…but that isn't the point. The point is, he is not the spy.”
“I don't know what to tell you. High Command interrogated him personally. I'm just glad the Captain didn't blame me for this blunder.”
“Captain Tarkey? She knew about it?”
“Told me this morning.” He took a drink, savoring the bubbles. “She still wants you to continue working on decrypting that device though.”
She still wants me working on it? If the spy was found, why continue? I need to talk to her. Lisa thought, then promptly turned and walked out of his office.
Officer Kurney scratched his head, surprised how fast she just dropped it and left. “That was weird, wasn't it, Xavier?”
Xavier retracted the bottle of champagne and the sound of rocks tumbling rattled under the desk. Once the sound stopped, the champagne bottle returned, this time riding in a bucket of ice. Officer Kurney chuckled, finishing his first glass.
“Okay, okay. I’ll get the stain. Have some patience, will you?”

Cam’s eyes darted between the different commanders in the conference room. The meeting felt far more casual with Lieutenant Commander Hoffman leaning against the wall. He took the news better than the rest.
“Captain, why are we leaving so soon?” Borgan asked.
“We have new orders.”
“Which are?” Lieutenant Commander Jynx asked. Her unwavering eye contact demanded an answer she was not going to get.
“Straight from High Command. And it is need to know.”
“We don't need to know?”
“Those are my orders, Commander,” Captain Tarkey said, wishing she could say more. She appreciated Lieutenant Commander Jynx's frustration. At least she cared enough to complain.
Lieutenant Commander Jynx looked back to channel her anger on a more acceptable target. Lieutenant Commander Hoffman was unfazed by Captain Tarkey’s vagueness. “Are you hearing this?”
“I'm hearing. Listening, not so much,” he responded.
“How are we supposed to prepare when we don't know where we are going or what we are supposed to do?” Warrant Officer Dander asked.
Lieutenant Commander Jynx turned her head back to the captain, adding to his question. “And what about repairs? We only got half of what I needed to get this ship back to fully operational.”
“I hope one of those halfs is the seating in this room,” Lieutenant Commander Hoffman groaned.
Lieutenant Commander Jynx’s eyes burned with rage, once again turning back to him. “If you would just stand like everyone else, you could justify the extra food you shove down your gullet.”
“Oh, that's right,” Lieutenant Commander Hoffman responded, letting her insult slide right off. “Will our food supply hold up for the journey?”
“We’ll have enough food, especially once we get there,” Captain Tarkey answered. “As for preparing, carry on as you normally have. I don't expect any resistance.”
“And repairs?” Lieutenant Commander Jynx asked.
“All we need is the hyperdrive…and maybe the tow beam, but I believe that is still functional.”
“Why would we need a tow beam?” Lieutenant Commander Jynx asked.
“Isn't it obvious? To tow things.” Lieutenant Hoffman chimed in.
She had enough of his comments, marching over to him.
Cam closed the gap first to prevent a fistfight. “Lieutenant Commander, why don't we take a deep breath?”
Her fists were balled up, nostrils flared as she stared daggers at Lieutenant Commander Hoffman. His content smile further infuriated her. She leaned toward him, but Cam stood between them.
“Lieutenant Commander Jynx,” Captain Tarkey said sternly.
She straightened up, remembering where she was. “Yes, ma’am.”
“I know you're frustrated with this arrangement, but I don't think hitting him will change anything.”
“His jaw might be rearranged, probably would be a better change,” Warrant Officer Dander remarked.
“I want an update on the hyperdrive status by days end. You can't do that without a good hand,” Captain Tarkey reasoned.
Lieutenant Commander Jynx wanted nothing more than to show the Klendaran what she felt of him. It would have to wait though. The captain was merciful to her rare action and would not likely take kindly to a refusal to be civil. “Yes ma’am.”
“Good. You are all dismissed.”
Lieutenant Commander Jynx was the first out the door, followed by Borgan, and Warrant Officer Dander. Lieutenant Commander Hoffman was almost to the door before the captain called to him.
“And Lieutenant Hoffman.”
“Yes?” he asked, trying to face her.
“Might I suggest you learn to work with her. Otherwise next time, neither Cam or I will stop her.”
He nodded and left. It was hard to tell if he took it seriously or not, but at least he was warned. Captain Tarkey let out a sigh of relief, exhausted from the tense meeting.
“I know what you need,” Cam said, walking behind her. His hands cupped her shoulders and thumbs pressed into her tight muscles. She relaxed, leaning her head straight back.
“Aww. That feels good.”
“You like it? My mom always said I pushed too hard.”
“No, harder the better,” Captain Tarkey said, feeling him press harder. She gasped, finding it hard to find the words with the wave of pleasure surfing through her. Her eyes looked to the ceiling, flickering to stay open.
“Too much?”
“Never,” Captain Tarkey said, getting weak in the knees.
He continued his massage, wanting to bring up something far more worrying than a meeting. “Banyani, I was thinking about High Command and I was wondering, why did they give you a new mission after believing there are still spies onboard?”
“I have been thinking about that too,” Captain Tarkey said and moved away. His touch was too intoxicating to focus on answering this question. “I think it is a test.”
“A test?”
“To see how I handle rooting them out. Maybe it's their way of giving me a second chance.”
“So, was Lotan even a spy?”
“I don't know, but that is the story I'm telling my officers. High Command will find out the truth. In the meantime, if there is a spy still onboard, I just gave them a reason to think they are safe.”
“Then what is our next move?”
Captain Tarkey touched his collar, fixated on his neck. She dreamed of unbuttoning his uniform to show off a little skin. Her gaze stayed on him, idly answering his question. “We need to look at those shuttles. Find out how they can be stolen so easily.”
“I'm on it then.”
He turned to go, shattering her daydream. This man was eager to help. And she was eager to show her appreciation. Captain Tarkey grabbed his hand. Cam looked back at his hand and then to her. Her eyes begged him to stay, despite him going off to do real work.
“How about a kiss for good luck?”
She really does have the hots for me. How did I get so lucky? Cam wasn't going to turn her away, giving her a kiss. He thought it would be brief, but apparently last night wasn't enough to satisfy her thirst for him. Once their lips touched, she held him close. Her hands crawled up his back and she leaned in further, almost knocking him off balance. She was all over him and he was a willful slave to her every move.
Captain Tarkey wasn't fully enthralled in her own desire, pushing away from him suddenly when the door swooshed open. She turned to see who it was, relieved to see Lisa instead of virtually anyone else.
“Did I interrupt something?” Lisa smirked.
Captain Tarkey and Cam both responded at the same time, giving the opposite one word answer. Captain Tarkey did a double take, glad to hear his disagreeing answer was yes.
“We were just wrapping up. Did you get that device decrypted?”
“Not yet. I heard Lotan was arrested. Was he really a spy?” Lisa asked.
“That is what I am hoping you will find out. I don't want to assume victory so quickly. There may be more than just him.”
“What do we do next?”
“You can always come with me and help figure out how these shuttles are stolen,” Cam offered.
“Shuttles are being stolen?”
“My sister was one of the culprits. She left the ship early and nobody knew about it. I need to see how that is possible.”
“I bet I can figure it out before Cam.”
“You're on!” Cam playfully said and ran to the door. His competitive spirit was spurred on by his need to impress Banyani. With that kind of motivation, he was unstoppable. To Lisa, it was adorable.
“One date and he is head over heels for you. What other alien secrets are you holding out on me?”
“You really think so?” Captain Tarkey was absolutely beaming.
Lisa gestured to the closing door. “He’s not running to get away from you. What did you two do after leaving the dance floor last night?”
Captain Tarkey swooned, thinking back to the night. Typical first dates on her planet were usually more formal, at least in her limited experience. Vani would attest to a far different custom, but none of those dates were expecting more than a warm place to rest their genitals. No, her time with Cam was far more rewarding. They bonded over stories of their past, all of which were thoroughly eye opening and reasonably comical. She loved to laugh and he was quick to joke. Another quality she loved about him.
“We took a walk along the beach. Told each other stories of our lives growing up, made some jokes, ran away from a flock of birds. You know, normal date stuff.”
“You two have weird hobbies.” Lisa smiled. “What are you going to do about Vani?”
“I don't know yet. Discipline doesn't ever seem to get through to her.”
“You ever tried pranking her?”
Captain Tarkey tried to recall pranking anyone. It was not her style, but hearing Lisa's suggestion made the idea sound like the answer to tempering her sister's never ceasing antics.
“How would pranking her do anything?”
“It would embarrass her. Make it a point it will continue unless she shapes up.”
The more she thought about it, the more worried she became. Vani was already being nice by not hitting on Cam. She didn't want to disrupt that dynamic, but her theft could not go unpunished.
“It can't be a big prank,” Captain Tarkey’s worried tone made it clear to Lisa this couldn't be too malicious.
“I got your back, Banyani. Leave it to me,” Lisa said and began to make her exit as well.
“But you have a device to decrypt.”
“I'm waiting for it to finish. Also, justice delayed is justice unserved!” Lisa declared, leaving with her fist raised in victory.
“Why do I have a bad feeling about this?”

The clanging of metal echoed in the shuttle hall as Cam was trying to pry off the center console of the shuttle in question. He had a rudimentary understanding of where to find everything, but no tools or real practical knowledge on disassembly. Instead he resorted to the tried and true method of a desperate man. Beat the hell out of it.
It took him quite a while, but eventually he got access to the console. The cables inside were all rather neat, except for a few sections. Some cables were clipped and others were wound together. There was a lot going on, so he took pictures of anything possibly out of place. He had a few friends in engineering who could help him decipher this later.
Once he was satisfied with the amount of pictures, he had a new problem. How was he going to put the heavily dented, scratched, and bent piece of metal back on?
“How was I ever allowed to be an engineer?” he said to himself, holding the mangled piece in his hand.
The unwanted answer to his question came crashing in from above as Guiffy fell from the ceiling. His body bounced off the ground in a cloud of black dust. He coughed and moaned as he rolled up onto his feet.
“Guiffy?” Cam said, shocked to see him.
“Hello Cam, long time no see.” Guiffy waved. “You're probably wondering why I am covered in dust?”
“Or why you were crawling around in the ceiling ducts?”
“Haha. See that is a funny story. Apparently that transfer to engineering never got approved. Bureaucracy and all that, so I have been just doing all the work no one else wants to do in the meantime. Check the ducts for leaks, patch holes near the hull, and rewiring the laser turrets. Thankfully, I can get to them all from the ducts.”
Cam felt a tinge of guilt. He never actually submitted a transfer, at least not formally. It worked fine when they swapped, but people were going to start asking questions when mail stopped arriving. What he should've been worried about was the havoc Guiffy was unleashing on the ship, seeing as he had no formal training.
“Say, what are you working on?”
Cam held up the mangled metal. “I was investigating a shuttle that was hijacked.”
“Hotwired. Oh, yeah, everyone does that around here.”
“They do?”
“Sure. Best kept secret in the fleet. All you have to do is tie a few wires together. I saw Nurse Tarkey and Doctor Shamberg take this one a few days ago. Were they not supposed to?”
“No, they weren't. You said Doctor Shamberg was with her?”
“Yeah…at least I think so. I’ve been seeing Doctor Shamberg everywhere ever since I started mapping the ducts. He is one busy guy, I tell ya. I'm not surprised he wanted to get some extra R&R. All these other aliens are so needy.”
Dang, how am I going to break the news, these shuttles are easier to steal than an unchained bike at the park? Probably over dinner or something. I always prefer bad news on a full stomach.
“Well, I better get going. It was nice catching up. “ Cam raised the metal up. “Any chance you could repair this for me?”
Guiffy took the metal from him. “Consider it done!”
Whew, at least that is one less piece of bad news I have to tell Banyani. And I beat Lisa to it. Looks like everything is coming up Cam today!

Lisa walked down the hall, thinking about the perfect way to prank Captain Tarkey's sister. She had nothing against Vani, but if it gave her friend one less headache, it would be worth it. The question was, what to do?
There were so many options, many of which were either far too diabolical or insignificant to enact any real change. She needed something with some punch, but not too much. Lisa was leaning toward cling wrap in front of a doorway, but when she saw Borgan outside his door working on something, she thought crowdsourcing the idea might be helpful.
“Hey Borgan, whatcha doing?”
Borgan nearly jumped to the stratosphere, fumbling with some strange L shaped tool. The metal clanged on the floor, louder than his startled gasp.
“Lisa,” Borgan said, catching his breath. “You scared me.”
“Jumpy, are we?”
“I just…didn't see you there,” Borgan said, picking up his tool.
“What is that thing?”
“It's a baton.”
Lisa chuckled. “Wasn't that thing straight when I borrowed it? What did you do?”
“It's a long story.” Maybe she'll drop it? She doesn't seem like someone who likes long stories.
“I got time.”
“You don't have anything else to do?” Borgan said.
“Just trying to think of a way to prank Vani.”
“Have you tried changing out her perfume? She hates the smell of seafood.”
Lisa put her hands on her hips. “Huh, how do you know that?”
“That’s a longer story.”
“Well, now I have even more time and you have two stories to tell.”
Ugh, might as well. It is the least I could do for her, saving my life. Just don't offer her any tea. “Only if you promise to tell no one.”
“Not a soul.” Lisa beamed, curious what strange troubles occured in Borgan's life.
“Come inside, I'd rather not tell the whole ship.”
Borgan led her inside and Lisa was not ready for what she saw. Dark blue walls were offset by a pink floor. He had a single white couch in the entryway with a bright stage light shining over it.
Should I be watching out for cameras? Oh, he’s a lizard, duh. I got to get my head out of the gutter. Lisa briefly reasoned before taking in the rest of his home. Behind the couch was a table piled high with bagged food. On both sides of the table were two doors. His room was much smaller than Captain Tarkey’s, at least on first impressions.
“Sorry for the mess,” Borgan said, gesturing to the table of bagged food. “I ordered too much.”
“Do you have a pet?”
“Eh…something like that…” Borgan said, throwing the baton on the couch.
“Something like that? Borgan, you are so mysterious.”
No, I'm vague. How am I supposed to tell her about this? She wouldn't understand. “Would you like something to drink?” No! I wasn't supposed to offer anything. Well, as long as she doesn't say tea, I'm fine.
“Do you have any tea?”
Borgan, you fool! “...yes…” Borgan’s eye twitched, trying his darndest not to say no. His mother taught him to be polite. He went to get her some tea, tapping the back wall. When he did, it transformed into a kitchen. Shelves flipped out and a counter jutted out at his waist. On the counter was a pot of tea, already brewing on a futuristic flat top hot pad.
“Wow, I didn't realize you had a whole kitchen hiding behind your wall.”
“It's nice, I guess,” Borgan said, pouring them both a cup. He added the only teabag he had to hers and sat down with her on the couch. She stirred it a little and watched him sniff the warm steam.
“So, story time. How did you break your baton?” Lisa said, pulling the baton out from under herself.
Borgan sighed. “I left it in the room over there.”
“The room?” Lisa turned around to see him pointing at one of the doors. “That explains nothing.”
“See…um…have you heard of Lamatcha?”
Lisa took a sip. “Sounds tasty, whatever it is.”
“It is tasty. Probably the best food you can eat, but it can be…difficult to get. Especially for me.”
“Okay?” Lisa was lost on the relevance, but wanted him to continue. “Why?”
“I think I waited too long.”
“Did it get ripe or something? Does the shell get hard? It has a shell, right?”
“You know, maybe I just show you. Might be easier to explain.” Borgan got up and went over to the door on the left. Lisa followed him, curious to see the reason for his uncomfortable explanation. Once he got to the door he couldn't bring himself to open it. His hand stood frozen, not willing to wave the door open.
“You going to open it?” Lisa asked.
“I don't know. It might be a–” Borgan began before Lisa moved his hand for him. The door swooshed open to a bear sized fly cramped in a tiny room. It turned to face them, snapping pinchers at them. He quickly waved the door shut, ending the nightmare of the bulbous gaze the creature always gave him.
“What was that!” Lisa asked.
“A Lamatcha.”
Lisa pointed at the door. “No, you said a Lamatcha was food, not a giant bug.”
“It is food.”
“To who? That thing is huge!”
“It is a delicacy on my planet. It is also a rite of passage. I was hoping to take it out and finally prove to my clan back home I was worthy, but every time it looks at me with those eyes…” Borgan shuddered thinking about what that thing could do to him.
Lisa felt for Borgan. His fear has been crippling and now he faced an obstacle even she didn't want to look at twice. She finally understood the extent of his fear and was sympathetic.
“Do you know how to kill it?”
“You hit it in the head. One good whack will do. It has a soft head.”
“Then why does your baton look like it had a fight with a bender?”
“I poked it first. His pincers are very strong.”
Lisa was ready to go to war against the monstrosity in the other room, but she knew this was not her fight. It was his alone. What he needed was a confidence boost. Someone to show him his fears could not control him. She had a feeling she was the only one who knew of this creature, so she took it upon herself to be his fear fighting coach.
“You’re afraid of it, aren’t you?”
“No…yes…but who wouldn't? You saw it.”
“You need to face your fears, but I think we can ease you into it.”
“Ease me into it? How?”
“Meet me at the simulator tomorrow,” Lisa said, giving his tea back to him. “If you can't face your fears in person, well face them in the virtual world.”
Borgan began curling his tail, thinking of what he usually used the “simulator” for. It was often a pleasurable time, but what she was offering was a far more terrifying experience based on the footage he saw of her. It hit a bunch of his fears, but if it would help him slay his overgrown roommate, he was willing to give it a shot.
“Why are you helping me?” Borgan asked. He was not used to such kindness, even from lower ranks.
Lisa shrugged. “You helped me. I help you. It's what friends do.”
“Friends.” Borgan smiled as she went off to complete her previous task. “Thanks…friend.”

2025.02.01 23:41 avid_baker Best advice on how to get from Paris to Alsace plus restaurant recommendations

Hi, We plan on taking a trip from Paris to Alsace by train, hiring a car there and staying for a few days, and then getting back to Paris (as it's the best way for us to get a flight back home). I tried to research trains and found the information to be confusing - On the sncf-connect app it seems like there are a few options to get to Strasbourg with OUIGO, but the prices vary a lot - and I didn't understand if it stands for the quality of the seat or something? Also - which station do you get to in Strasbourg? because it doesn't specify a station name, and the car companies allow you to take the car straight from Strasbourg's main railway station - and I don't want to book it in advance and suddenly get off somewhere else.
Also, on a very different note - we're celebrating something special and would like to get a recommendation for a fancy place in Paris (not necessarily Michelin level, but decent) that offers options for vegetarians. Seems like it's a hard one to find.
Many thanks in advance!

2025.02.01 23:41 Jazzlike_Entry_8807 Electrolytes

I’m on day 4 of my antibiotics. I’m a fitness person, and my stubborn self will not take a gym or yoga day off due to some meds. This is tough because the fatigue is real. My Dr did mention the importance of electrolytes….so since I had blurry vision, no energy from black tar water shitting post morning dose; I gave electrolytes a try. This is a game changer. To my struggling people, don’t forget these. I’m reading allot of posts about how horrible everyone is doing on the meds. Exercise and electrolytes are giving me hope for the next 10 days of this shit.
