Blade Runner 2049 is a 2017 film directed by Denis Villeneuve that made $276.6M at the box office, flopping but getting great reviews by critics. The budget was split 50/50 between Alcon and Sony, with Sony recouping first and collecting a fee for international distribution, with Warner Bros. distributing domestically. But how much did it lose for Alcon?
MONEY
The film made $92m domestically, $172.9m internationally excl. China and $11.6m in China. Using the 50/40/25 rule, that gives us:
- $46M DOMESTIC
- $69.16M INTERNATIONAL
- $2.9M CHINA
- $118.06M THEATRICAL
- $46.66M HOME ENTERTAINMENT ($15.553M DOMESTIC, $31.107M INTERNATIONAL)
- $93.33M STREAMING ($31.11M DOMESTIC, $62.22M INTERNATIONAL)
- $140M TOTAL ANCILLARIES ($46.66M DOMESTIC, $93.33M INTERNATIONAL)
- $258.06M TOTAL MONEY
As Alcon is a small company, they paid Warner Bros (who had a deal with them at the time) 8% of domestic revenue, with Sony presumably getting the same for international distribution. Most of the time, the distributor is paid before the production company.
- WARNER BROS: $7.41304M
- SONY: $13.23176M
- TOTAL DISTRIBUTION FEES: $20.6448M
- TOTAL MONEY AFTER DISTRIBUTION FEE: $237.4152M
The budget as stated was split equally between Sony and Alcon, the budget being $180m originally before rebates bring it down to $150m. As such, Sony and Alcon see $75m invested each. P&A is expected to be $130m, and in most cases P&A seems to be split with 40% domestically and 60% internationally, meaning Alcon has $52m in P&A with Sony having $78m invested. Production overhead is calculated at 15% of the budget, with it accounting to $11.25M for each partner. Sony would also have $7.8m in distribution overhead (10%), but as Alcon do not distribute and use Warner's distribution team, they would likely be paying the overhead for that with WB being paid back with the distribution fee. This equates to:

As said, Sony's deal lead to them earning back their money first, with Alcon recouping after. Here is an estimate on how it went:
- Sony and Warner Bros are paid back their distribution fees, leaving it at $237.4152M from $258.06M
- Sony earns back its $172.05M in costs, leaving Alcon $65.3652M
- WARNER BROS. $7.41304M - $5.2M = $2.21304M PROFIT
- SONY: $185.28176M - $172.05M = $13.23176M PROFIT
- ALCON: $65.3652M - $138.25M = $72.8848M LOSS
Thanks to the deal Tom Rothman made with Alcon, they recoup first with Alcon recouping later with ancillaries. For them, this means they made a slight profit thanks to their distribution fee. Warner Bros also made a small profit, but they did not invest anything apart from distribution overhead so their cap is low.
Alcon, however had a $72.8848M loss, and combined with several of their previous films such as Transcendence, Dolphin Tale 2, The 33, Point Break flopping as well as Father Figures not making its budget back, lead to them trimming down. Luckily for them however, The Garfield Movie was a success after multiple big budget bombs for them.

I (18F) moved into my dorm around 2 months ago and within the first week I started noticing a smell as soon as I opened the door. I have two roommates, both (18F), we’ll name one Sam and the other Emily. It’s important to know that Emily has the side closest to the door, meaning youre met with her bed, closet, and other things as soon as entering. I got the bunk above her bed, and feel that through out the night I wake up and smells musty. Through out the first week, I thought it was the room being unoccupied for so long. Soon came to realize the odor came from within her closet. Emily tends to wear sandals everyday, and the smell of old lady feet emanates through the room. I am embarrassed to have anyone over, even when it’s her own friends. In the first month, Sam went home for the weekend and brought back plug in air fresheners, aside from the bottles of febreeze I’ve been running through. It initially helped the smell and I was relieved but hours later I felt the smell creep up again despite the air freshener being on max use. It is now about to be week 9, end of fall quarter, and I began leaving my room to study rooms to help focus better on my work. It has gotten to the point where I feel nauseated every time I enter my room and as a homebody, preferring to leave the room is baffling. Sam has also noticed the smell, she has a top bunk next to mine and has woken up from the foul smell. We both tried to justify it in the beginning, but the rancid smell is just too much. The issue is that her stuff smells even after she does laundry and I’m genuinely confused and have started to be concerned for her. What should I do…?
