Wrote this for another subreddit a few years ago:
At the store I work at, we hire a few people on a seasonal basis every year (November and December). One of the new hires was an international student at a local college. Normally, all new hires are required to do online on-boarding and submit banking information prior to their first shift. One new co-worker didn't do that, but our store manager told her to just complete them prior to her second shift.
The only problem was... she never showed up for that shift! Or the next one. Or the next. She also didn't answer any calls, according to our manager, who was concerned for her safety.
Just yesterday, a month and a half after the shift she worked, she called the store demanding that she be paid for the shift she had worked which still isn't possible as she hasn't given her banking information. But even crazier...she said she was busy and decided she wasn't ready to start working just yet, but she would be ready after Christmas or maybe New Year's. Again, despite the fact that she was hired for a seasonal position. Our manager said she could not help but laugh and told her there was no chance of that happening; submit your banking information and you'll get your pay for the one shift, but there is no chance of you working here any more.
While I have no doubt that there are cultural differences between Canada and this woman's home country, I can't imagine there is any country where ghosting your employer and then just expecting to come back would be acceptable.
