I saw the Book of Mormon musical tonight (I had to pick a Sunday) and it was so cathartic to be able to watch it and laugh at the absurdity as an outsider.
I felt free. It was nice.

2024.11.25 06:21 dbyolton Caveat Emptor – MacOS Users and ADM 5.0
I’ve recently purchased an Asustor LockerStor6 Gen 3 (AS6806T), as a replacement for an outdated Areca Technology Thunderbolt 1 20TB DAS.
I configured the Asustor LockerStor6 Gen 3 with four Seagate IronWolf Pro 24Tb drives and four Samsung 990 EVO Plus 1TB M.2 SSD drives.
I made the decision to purchase the Asustor unit based on online research. I wanted a RAID5 NAS or DAS unit with N.2 SSD Cache that supported USB4/Thunderbolt IP connectivity, in addition to dual 10Gb Ethernet connections or a standard Thunderbolt 4 connection.
I knew that IP tunneling over USB4/Thunderbolt wasn’t part of the original LockerStor6 Gen 3 specification, but that it was something that might be added to the final product. So, when I learned that the Gen 3 series was shipping, I looked at the ADM 5.0.0.RA82 release notes. Under new features, it said “Added support for IP over USB4. Devices that also support this feature can be connected through USB4 and use typical network transfer protocols for transferring files.”
That tipped the scales for me in favor of the LockerStor6 Gen 3.
My unit arrived in late October and installing the 3.5” drives and N.2 SSD modules were easy to install. The hardware is solid.
Unfortunately, Asustor’s documentation, software quality assurance and technical support turned out to all be substandard. I soon discovered that Asustor had knowing shipped the unit without a feature complete, tested or documented version of ADM 5.0, their NAS software. By doing so, they have forced me to spend hours of time and effort alpha testing their product. Yes, it’s that bad that I won’t say “beta testing”.
Let me go through my issues, all of which are unresolved!
My first issue was with USB4/Thunderbolt IP connectivity, the feature that convinced me to purchase the LockerStor6 Gen 3 in the first place. I discovered that this feature is undocumented by Asustor. The unit “ships” with online ADM 4 documentation only, so the new USB4/IP and other features are undocumented. There is not even a supplement for ADM 5.
I know enough about Thunderbolt IP connectivity to configure the Thunderbolt Bridge on my Macintosh without documentation. Everything looked good when I connected my Macintosh to the LockerStor6 Gen3 using a Thunderbolt 4 certified cable. My Macintosh saw the LockerStor6 Gen3 and both units self-assigned an IP address on the same subnet.
So, from a technical standpoint, everything looked good. However, trying to connect using the LockerStor’s USB4NET1’s IP address resulted in a timeout and no connection.
Thunderbolt 4/USB4 cables can be temperamental, so I confirmed the cable, and my Macintosh Studio’s Thunderbolt Bridge configuration were correct by connecting my MacBook Pro using the same cable. It connected just fine.
I put in a support ticket with Asustor and have had the most incompetent support I’ve had in years. The technician first said that he had confirmed with R&D that USB4/IP connectivity was not supported on the unit, that it was not a feature of the product and the tech note would be corrected in the next release of ADM! After writing a letter of complaint about the technician, he finally came back and said that the USB4 connectivity was working on Windows 11, but that Macintosh support “was still being worked on”. This was three weeks after the original ticket was created.
This illustrates both the poor service provided by the Asustor support team and the marginalization of MacOS users by the development team. Did Asustor release ADM 5.0 before it was feature ready and fully tested with MacOS, so it can begin shipping the LockerStor Gen 3 and FlashStor Gen 2 products for use with Windows 11?
My second issue is with SMB support. It locks up whenever I mount a volume using SMB. It hangs just after I authenticate, and I can see an error in the SAMBA log. (I can log in if I use Windows 11 or downgrade to the much slower SMB1 standard.) Do I have a hardware problem or is ADM 5.0 this buggy? After reporting this issue, three weeks ago, Asustor has not yet acknowledged the problem or come back with an ETA about when this issue would be fixed.
While I waited for these two major items to be fixed, I’ve found problems with the AFP service.
- After copying and then backing up 10Tb of data, it had problem with long file names being corrupted. For example, “Monarch Butterfly © 2022 D. Bruce Yolton.jpg” became “Monarch Butterfly © 202#BAF.jpg”. These issues resolve if I unmount and then mount the volume, but they should not be occurring.
- File locks are not being released properly on Adobe Photoshop files, even after the application is closed. These locks are cleared if I unmount and then mount the volume, but this problem is interfering with my nightly backups.
- Adobe Lightroom Classic locks up if delete 500+ photographs, or only deletes only some of the files.
So, as I write this in late November, I have enough issues with the ADM 5.0 software and MacOS, that I seem to have a $1,499 paperweight.
Does anyone have contacts within Asustor who can help escalate these issues out of Tier 1 support? Or solutions to the SMB authentication or AFB bugs?

Many of you know that I've been using nylon satin cord in 1 mm, 1.5 mm, and 2 mm diameters = partially because I'm going for a different look, and partially because my body can't handle how long it takes to make the bracelets, it's too hard on my body and my eyes (although I appreciate suggestions for help with my eyes, I'm still not ready to make the switch to embroidery thread.
One of the reasons I keep using the satin thread is that some of the challenges have been fun to find solutions for. I love problem solving . At some point I'll put together some tips and tricks for this fiber.
But for projects that I want to make smaller, or ones with a lot of negative space in them, I'd like a cord that holds a knot a bit better (double half hitches hold with no problem unless you are trying to crimp just above them without having put glue on them first). I was wondering if anyone had anything else to suggest that has 1) a wide range of colors 2) isn't too rough for the underside of the arm 3) consistent quality. I would love a particular brand if you have one you like.
The image here is the same pattern and colors that I have used for one armband (about 15 inches) and 3 bracelets (this is when the lack of knot sealing was resolved). I love it, but I can't remember my original bracelet book password and the last time I tried it I never got a change your password link. I'm not sure the pattern number therefore but I'll add a picture of it to the post. This has my colors I don't think this variation was saved because otherwise I'd expect a google image search to find it.
The other thing in my photo that might be worth while for y'all is that I've got something that I find invaluable. What I'm using to hold my macrame while in my recliner is an old foamcore based laptop riser. So I can't draw permanently on it and there is no ruler the way there would be if I was using my macrame board. But It turns out there are two different types of tape that are basically labels or stickers if you prefer which are rulers. If you want ones 12 inches long at minimum you can get them with carpentry supplies, but the one I'm using is a wound ruler that is 8 inches long. It also has metric and is made by Med Tape. You can get it in the US from Amazon.
My favorite thing to do with such rulers is to mark a line which is the length I need and then start the knotting at the very top. That way when I reach the goal length I know right away.

2024.11.25 06:20 Complex_Ad_7708 Should I mention going to prison during my C&P exam?
I’m currently at 70% for PTSD and have my C&P exam tomorrow.
Last year, I accepted a plea deal and was sentenced to a year in prison for a crime that I committed.
The crime was extremely out of character for me and I don’t know if I should mention it during the C&P exam. The reason I feel like this is because it wasn’t a violent crime or anything I would consider really connected to PTSD (from being in combat zone).
Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Title says all. I feel like I need an iPad to complete my dive into the apple ecosystem, but I just cannot find a reason to get one except for maybe being able to download movies for offline watching on a screen larger than my phone. Just a little update because you all were so nice before (mostly. Some of you need time in the naughty corner).
Quick recap: my redundancy meeting came suddenly, even though I had known it was coming for months... these things still feel fast. I took the money and ran the very next week and have been funemployed since early October. I would have stuck around and used up all that personal leave, but I honestly preferred to have them pay me the 5 weeks notice.
Since then I've been enjoying the downtime, catching up on personal stuff and ignoring the little voice reminding me to find a job. Then my mate shoved a job in front of me, and honestly it's a good'un. Plays to all my strengths. More money than I've ever earned. Great workplace culture.
And they just told me I'm the preferred candidate, with confirmation to come tomorrow.
Team, I'm superstitious, so I can't tell everyone until it's firm, so I'm telling you. If it comes through tomorrow, I'll be in the best place I've ever been, financially. With the added bonus of having a higher wage than ever before. So fingers and toes crossed for me.
