2024.11.25 07:58 Mediocre-Fly4059 Free accommodation for Student instead of Au-pair?

I need input for some considerations: For some years now I hire au-pairs to help with the children and household. They get to live with us in our house for free plus the usual au-pair package. Still, it has been often problematic, bc some au-pairs lacked general motivation, some had little interest for children or they came to Germany for completely different reasons than they initially pretended, like to get health insurance and treatments or solely as a first entry to the EU. Sometimes it was more effort to fulfill their needs than the help they provided. Before you downvote - pls don’t get me wrong: we had great experiences as well. But with both of us working full time we really need some support and not somebody who calls in sick every second day with a sneeze or headaches. So me and my wife are currently a little bit fed up and evaluating other options.
One option might be to lend the space we have (bed room+bath room) to a student for free, who then besides studying keeps the house clean and who try’s to be flexible if we really need somebody to take care for the children (>7).
I do not know at all how much student itineraries have changed since our time at university, but I guess it might be more flexible nowadays with online courses.
Do you think this might be a model beneficial for both sides? Do you think students would accept to live closely together sharing a house with a family?

Heya all,
In grammar school, I learned English, Latin and Spanish (there was no French offer), but I was so intrigued by the complexity and sound of the French language that I really wanted to learn it. So after my Abitur (GCSEs/highschool diploma), I started to study by myself. I got pretty far and have been accepted for translation studies (FNL >> DE) at a German university.
I've been a student for 3 semesters now. We're a very international campus with only translation and interpreting students from all around the world. So naturally, I've tried to engage with French native speakers. Here's where my problem starts: I don't seem to click with any French native speakers at all. I've met many people from France, Belgium, Romance Switzerland, Algeria and Cameroon. But simply put, I don't like any of them. Even my native French teachers are really unsympathetic. On the other hand, I easily get along with people from Spain, Italy, Portugal, Latin America, Czech Republic etc. How can that be?
After 1.5 years of unsuccessfully engaging in French language & culture events, I'm not sure I want to pursue my French studies any longer. I'm just so frustrated because I put so much money, time and effort into learning French, and now I'm seriously considering giving up on French and switching to another language, only because of what? A different mentality? What even is the reason?
I'm not even sure what I'm actually asking you all. I guess if you have any thoughts or insights, feel free to share.

Hi all,
I have a difficult choice to make between two jobs, and having the opinion of strangers would actually be really helpful...
I am currently in Job 1 (and have been for about 15 months). I have a formal offer for Job 2, and need to decide whether to accept it or not by the end of the week!
A bit about me: I am in my early 30's, recently married, no kids yet. We have planned to try for a kid around this time next year, but nothing is set in stone. I would describe myself as more of an introvert, so I do not have a massively busy social life.
JOB 1
- Low-stress, low-stakes job - but I am really bored. I can generally get my work done in about 3 hours and then have to essentially kill time for the rest of the day.
- Hours are 9-6 (so roughly 45 hours a week) and very predictable. I almost never have to do any work during the weekend.
- I am required to be in the office 4 days a week (so unfortunately I still have to be around even when out of work).
- I am paid well (too well for the amount of work). Other benefits (time off, insurance, etc) are broadly the same as Job 2.
- I do not really enjoy the work, but I don't hate it either.
- My team is really not sociable, which makes the days feel even longer / more boring.
- There is limited scope for progression at the company (but there may be scope to progress laterally by joining another company in the longer term). My boss likes me and is open about the fact that he wants me to progress as quickly as possible (and will support it), but there is only so much room for progression within the company.
JOB 2
- Much more stress, much higher stakes - but I am almost certain it will be a lot more interesting / engaging.
- Hours will be a lot more unpredictable, will likely average around 9-7pm (so an average of 50 hours a week) but will likely get to 55-60 hours a week on a semi-regular basis (maybe one week a month). I will likely have to work a weekend day here and there.
- I would be required to be in the office 4 days a week (so same as Job 1).
- I would be paid roughly 20% more than Job 1. Other benefits (time off, insurance, etc) are broadly the same as Job 1.
- My would-be boss seems really nice / sociable, and I think he will be a good role model / mentor. The rest of the team seems fairly nice too.
- The path to progression is a little bit clearer. If internal progression is too slow, I would have the opportunity to progress laterally (either in a similar job, or back to a job similar to Job 1 but with a higher level of seniority).
