2024.11.25 12:31 Efficient-Cook-7961 Epic, we need to talk..

I feel i need to preface this by saying i genuinely enjoy playing Competitive Fortnite (CC, FNCS, etc) not because i believe im the next Bugha, or even that i want to be a "tier X" pro or god forbid a streamer.
Simply put, I find honest enjoyment and excitement in the process of learning and mastering strategy and mechanics specific to a number of disciplines. Then taking that practice and dueling it out with other players who enjoy the same challenges in a race to better yourself and your abilities in the hopes of besting you opposition.. Eventually, hopefully, resulting in some fast pace, action filled bouts of pure focus sometimes showing off incredible feats of human ability all in the name of being able to yell "SIT DOWN BITCH, you just got fucked on!!!".. (I say that purely defined in white line fever. Off the "field" i always push for humble and respectful conversations with adversaries. After all we both love the game we're trying to kill each other at, we clearly have things in common ❤).
With that out of the way. The last two solo CC's i've played i have died 3/7 games and 2/7 games to cheaters. They were blantent. I reported and 4 did have actions taken against them.
Regardless of if you want to believe the above stats as true or exaggerated, and/or just want to call "skill issue" in relation to my performace (not unwarrented sometimes, i admitt, but at almost 40yrs old i regularly qual for solo CC. Best finals game was 6th with 3 kills)..
Its no secret there is known issues with cheaters in E-Sports as a whole and Fortnite - being one of the most lucrative games - the lobby is never short of Neanderthal plebs with the coordination of a sloth on valium fucking up legitimate players games trying to make a souless $100 from Epic and.. what?..... Brag to a girl about how he cheated to get it? .. The irony must be lost on people with room temp IQ's i guess? I dunno. I dont hang with losers, that shits contagious.
But I digress ..
Being beaten by a truely better player is just as valuable as winning against someone else. IF the passion and spirit of competitive integrity exists. You learn how you were beat, you plan counters, you practice said counters, you get better, and hope next time you're up to the challenge if you cross paths with the same or better opponent down the line.
This is as ancient a philosophy as sport itself. Even older.
I dont have a perfect idea for a fix, im just spitballing here. But the main premise i feel im trying to convey is that Competitive Tournments need better curating (stating the obvious i know).
The most obvious solution is having multiple days of comp in the hopes that by the time the finals roll around all the cheaters are out.
However time delay curating unfortunate causes issues for genuine players as some (most) cant always commit to multiple days of qualifiers.
And if it was to be standard, as an (purely made up number) example, three rounds at 3hrs each just to make a Finals lobby each week just isnt always feasable for alot of people.
So why am i writing this? Well, take this with a grain of salt, im in no way trying to infer i have a magic bullet... But
If i was trying to optimise the above predicament (making CC viable for casual competitors who cant grind 6-10hrs a week in multiple qual rounds just to make the set lobby games at a later date.
How would people feel about having new permanent offical epic game mode/s, say 1v1 box fights, 1v1 build fights, even realistic or speed 1v1, or all of the above, in which you are to prove your metal.
This would be done in an attempt to bring back competitive integrity by adding more filters and thus opportunities to catch / ban cheaters. It also has the abilty to collect stats from large number of the short duration fights on every player through these evaluations that could set base line stats for each player. From which any sudden or significant increase in aim could be easier to catch if someone toggles off cheats in these early rounds only to have their stats suddenly and drastically increase when they land on tournament island.
This mode/modes could be available 24/7 and with much smaller render environment/ shorter fight times and shear number of fights a data points, reprted players will HOPEFULLY get banned just trying to qual into the Islands Open Rounds.
If they toggle off cheats and still meet the requirements of these intial qual rounds, once on the island, if the base line stats are suddenly exponentially better, it could make for quickeeaiser bans.
Compoundem the above, with my belief the minimum account level should be raised (again), added with the need to acquire ranks from both BR ranked and the hypothetical official 1v1 mode/s above, Epic is giving as many possible chances for potential suspect/s to be reported and hopefully removed before ever even being able to get on the real BR bus when money is on the line.
This may get met with opinions of "grinding hell" .. But every comp player practices these modes (boxfight, build, etc) anyway. and for genuinely decent / honest players it shouldnt be anything to you but higher quality practice... With a simple dream of hoping youre the one that 200 pumps a cheater back to his desktop (not the lobby), and the knowledge that you just sacrificed that pathetic cheater to another week of grinding to try again. Eventually it will be a choir, not an "investment".
TLDR; Epic could increase competitive integrity by adding new official 1v1 creative modes, to increase the number of filters (chance) of people exposing themselves using hacks and hopefully gets a community ban before even being allowed anywhere near a tournment bus.
Ive seen so many cheat devs sell their scripts as "an investment"..
Epic, you need to make their "investment" such a pain in the ass, that for people wanting to cheat, it just becomes a choir because of the increased probability of your account being flagged at one of many filters, instead of low risk / hogh reward cheating methods that currently exist.
What do you think? ..

2024.11.25 12:31 Phoebus_dm Need help with a problematic couple

Hey friends :)
We are currently facing a dilemma as a gaming group that has been building up over the last few months and has now reached a point where action has become unavoidable. It concerns a couple, let's call them John and Jane, who joined our group about six months ago. Our core group consists of four men, one woman and my golden retriever, who is always with us and, as we jokingly say, is our mascot. We've been a close-knit and loyal group of friends for years who see role-playing as more than just a hobby: It's a means for us to tell stories, laugh, cry, and sometimes challenge ourselves in a safe setting.
What are we playing?
"Dance of Death" unfolds a world in which loss and emptiness devour souls. We are set in the present day in St Petersburg, the new capital of Russia. The mysterious ‘disappearance’ incident has torn Russia apart - and the characters too. From one day to the next, Moscow was deserted, as if all the millions had suddenly disappeared. Marked by depression and trauma, they search for meaning in a St Petersburg caught between decadent decay and brutal reality. Whether through anger, faith, repression or destructive hope, they all wrestle with what they have lost. Everyone tries in their own way to somehow heal the hole in their soul caused by the loss of their loved ones, the ignorance of their disappearance and the end of hope.
The players are part of the newly founded ‘Section 13’ department of the Russian secret service, whose aim is to investigate the unexplained and preserve the stability of the country. The setting is occult but lowkey supernatural, the focus on realism is much more interesting.
The narrative role-playing game dispenses with character sheets or systems. Decisions are made with a D10 if fate demands it, a maximum of 2-3 dice per evening in total. Totentanz is dense, intimate and emotionally powerful. Inspired by Frank Miller's Sin City, Polanski's The Nine Gates and the Hannibal and The Leftovers series, it is aimed at players looking for in-depth storytelling. It's not about heroes, but about damaged people searching for their place in a destroyed world.
The introduction of John and Jane
Our dynamic is characterised by a mixture of deep trust and a willingness to tackle uncomfortable subjects - both in and out of the game. Totentanz, our current setting, is designed to explore moral grey areas and intense personal conflicts. The themes are complex and require a level of emotional investment from the players that tests not only the characters, but also their own limits. John and Jane initially seemed like an enrichment. Jane is always polite in the OT, brings home-baked cakes and shows a keen interest in role-playing, even if her involvement has increasingly waned. She also seems to have little interest in our approach and wants to play much more blunt, superficial heroes. John is friendly in the OT, but can't avoid being overly know-it-all in OT discussions and also in the course of the game IT, which over time became not only annoying, but downright exhausting. He seems to have a main character syndrome, so his criticism mainly comes when he doesn't think he's had enough screentime.
Causa John:
We have a specific problem with John: his behaviour at the table is increasingly causing tension. He has a habit of appearing arrogant, even on topics where he clearly lacks knowledge. That might be tolerable in itself, but the way he corrects others in discussions comes across as disrespectful and patronising. It gives the impression that he thinks the rest of us are naïve or uneducated - an impression that is reinforced by the way he expresses praise or thanks. It seems as if even his positive words are not authentic, but meant ironically or mockingly.
A prime example of this was a tabletop game that we played together with the core group. John had been invited to play along, although as a long-term student in his late 30s he had no money. Out of solidarity, we financed a starter set for him (approx. 200 euros/250 Dollars), which wasn't a big problem for us as we all work - with the exception of one of our fellow players, who is a student and had to cut back for this. We found it irritating and disrespectful that John didn't express any thanks for this, but even commented that he would find other systems more interesting. Even more serious, however, was the fact that he simply missed half of the planned games, turning up late once and not even cancelling the other two times. This behaviour was increasingly perceived by the group as unreliable and disinterested - a tipping point after which his know-it-all attitude and lack of awareness of social cues finally became a bigger problem.
Causa Jane:
The problem with Jane is different, but no less difficult. Although she is friendly and committed, she has a fundamentally different approach to role-playing that is difficult to reconcile with our group. Jane tends to completely block out unpleasant or conflict-laden scenes in the game. This is particularly problematic as it means she is constantly pulling herself out of narrative nodes that were designed specifically for her and her character development. In my role as game master, I have developed four different story arcs for her alone, all of which she has cancelled out with a mixture of passive rejection and deliberate ignoring - an experience I have never had in almost ten years as a leader.
Another obstacle is Jane's black-and-white thinking. She seems to politcally divide the world into clear categories of ‘good’ and ‘evil’, whether due to a lack of knowledge or a conscious decision. She says, that she is very woke. While moral ambivalence and ironic comments are appreciated and enjoyed in our group, Jane often takes them negatively. Her discomfort with the emotional and conflict-laden game is palpable, which significantly affects both her own enjoyment and the dynamics at the table.
Bonus: Depression and the question of personal responsibility
Another aspect that complicates the situation is the issue of depression. Jane addressed this issue in relation to John, trying to at least explain his behaviour. Whilst I generally sympathise with such challenges - I have had bouts of depression myself - I cannot and will not accept this as a universal excuse. I believe that an illness should never be used as a ‘free pass’ to avoid responsibility or social consideration.
As someone who has struggled with such phases myself, I have learnt not to let an illness dominate me. My life is full of responsibilities: I am heir to a business with approx. 50 employees, friend and to many people, and also dog dad to a wonderful golden retriever. These roles require not only my commitment, but also the ability to pick myself up in difficult moments. Claiming to accept depression as an excuse for everything is not only incomprehensible to me, but also problematic. It may work in other weaker circles of friends, but in our group, which is characterised by a high degree of personal responsibility, such an attitude inevitably leads to tensions.
My own omission: the problem of delayed criticism
One point I have to make self-critically is that I withheld criticism from the others for a long time. Our group normally has an open and direct climate, but I had the feeling that Jane and John would not be able to deal well with the confrontational culture we cultivated. For this reason, I vetoed when the others wanted to voice their criticism earlier. This veto was a mistake. It didn't ease the situation, it made it worse. Yannick and Pia seem to be used to avoiding conflicts and sidestepping critical issues from their previous circles of friends. However, our dynamic as a group is different and it would have been better to address this openly earlier.
The current situation and the next step
The rest of the group has now reached a point where patience has run out. This is not about ‘settling scores’ or wanting to force someone out of the group, but about the need to maintain our momentum and the fun of the game. Role-playing is a hobby based on mutual trust and respect. It requires everyone involved to be willing to question themselves and their own comfort zone. If this foundation is no longer there, the experience suffers for everyone. John and Jane have both shown characteristics and behaviours that are increasingly a burden on our group. While John isolates himself through his smartassery and lack of awareness of social cues, Jane is so emotionally and content-wise blocked that her participation in the game feels more like a compulsory exercise. Both points are now openly addressed by all the other players and it is clear that we need to find a solution.
Conclusion
Our situation is difficult, but can it be solved? We will either have clear and open discussions, which will hopefully lead to an improvement, or part ways with Yannick and Pia if there is no constructive change. As game leader and the heart of this group, I see it as my responsibility to stop ignoring the problem. I hope that we can find a solution that works for everyone involved - either by adapting or by setting clear boundaries.
What do you think?

2024.11.25 12:31 LunaticoGamesYT Upgraded from a Lenovo Z70-80 laptop to this baby!

Just wanted to say thank you to everyone since this community and buildapc was of great help in choosing every single part. I spent 10 years with a Lenovo laptop that had an Nvidia 840M and suddenly it died on me so it really was time for an upgrade. Spent some weeks researching and overthinking every single thing but couldn't be more happy, even bought myself a new 1440p monitor to match and it's amazing. Games feel smoother than ever, no more searching for guides to optimize my PC, no more worrying about FPS drops and no more worrying about if a game will run on my PC. I'm extremely happy with the results and while it's not state of the art, it's a massive upgrade and I'm extremely grateful for every post, question and answer posted in this subreddit because it helped me a lot so thank you everyone!

2024.11.25 12:31 TRASHBOAT_94 Floating Sensation after "Waking Up" From a Dream

I dreamt I jumped off a tall ledge in my dream (video game style, so jumping wouldn't have lasting consequences). But after painlessly hitting, I didn't respawn into the game world, but instead I "woke up" in what I thought was my bed. I felt my arms and upper torso floating while my eyes were still closed, like I was still settling down into my bed. Felt pretty trippy and relaxing tbh.
After that, I opened my eyes and looked around. It seemed like my normal bedroom, until I truly woke up and remembered details that didn't match from this dreaming bedroom (like a white towel thrown over a computer chair). After realizing this, I committed the experience to memory and fell back asleep.
Not a full OBE, but absolutely progress! (Currently starting Wave VI)
