The scientific policy group of the eight countries with territory in the Arctic Circle says that over the past 30 years, the minimum coverage of summer ice has fallen by half while its volume has fallen by three-quarters. This change has profound implications, beyond those countries that have a direct stake in the region. The energy-storing capabilities of ice could provide a more efficient, climate-friendly approach to cooling. Ice thermal energy storage like this can also address the need for storing surplus renewable energy to balance out the grid at times of peak demand. Applications range from district heating and cooling to power generation. Jahda Swanborough, Lead, Environmental Initiatives at the World Economic Forum, said: "News that the world’s largest ice sheet is melting more rapidly is a loud wake-up call. This is a classic example of a global commons challenge – the consequences of Antarctic ice caps melting have the potential to affect most people on the planet. Since the 1970s, we have lost 75% of the volume of Arctic summer sea ice. The Arctic affects the jet stream, causing extreme weather all over the world. The Arctic used to be white but now it's turning blue, and absorbing more heat in a feedback loop. Ice loss from the Antarctic and Greenland ice sheets was the largest contributor to sea level rise in recent decades. Even if all greenhouse gas emissions ceased today, the heat already in the ocean and atmosphere would cause substantial ice loss and a corresponding rise in sea levels. But exactly how much, and how fast, remains unclear. In the 1980s, there was as much as 600,000 square kilometres of multi-year ice covering around two thirds of the Laptev Sea. In 2020, it has been ice-free for months with no multi-year ice left at all. The whole Arctic Ocean is heading for ice-free conditions in the future, defined as less than one million square kilometres of ice cover. During a career spent studying glaciers and ice sheets from Norway to Antarctica and the Swiss Alps to the Himalayas, she has watched all of them shrink. As the 2021 UN Climate Change Conference, also known as COP26 , wraps up in Glasgow, Scotland, Wadham’s warnings about the consequences of global warming are more important than ever. Researchers from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) recorded a significant decrease over time in both the extent of ice cover and its thickness. In the 1980s, the average March sea ice was more than 15.5 million square kilometres, but in recent years the average is closer to 14 million square kilometres. And rather than diseases being released by melting ice, some argue that as Earth warms northern countries will become more susceptible to outbreaks of "southern" diseases like malaria, cholera and dengue fever, as these pathogens thrive at warmer temperatures. Melting ice sheets is one of the most cliché signifiers of global warming and the climate crisis — but clichés originate in the truth, after all, and ice sheets are still melting. In fact, new research has found that the rate of global ice loss — aka melting ice sheets — is higher than ever before.

Coming up this weekend for Thanksgiving and wondering about ice skating. Last year my kid saw an outdoor rink somewhere downtown and was bummed he didn't have skates with. Are there any rinks with open skating or open hockey/stick and puck? Would love to skate off some calories.

Completely stumped.
23M-Graduated with a degree in Criminal Justice. I’m grateful in that I live in a HCOL at home with my parents therefore I am not under water yet, but I have made multiple attempts to spread my wings and they got to be clipped at this point. I cannot get a good criminal justice job for the life of me. I fail every single polygraph I take purely because of the job hunt anxiety I have. Found out this morning I am out of the hunt for another Homeland Security Job. Got denied for a Bureau of Prisons secretary job. Got denied for two different local police agencies. One for polygraph, one for a stupid traffic ticket (illegal left turn), they never even cared to do answer my appeal. Two years of hunting and nothing. I have 8 years of consistent work experience moving up the chain at my private education job. It’s insane because I literally can do anything and everything that is asked of me in mere seconds yet I feel like an utter waste. I have done everything from changing the thermostats to lifeguarding to running the front office to running the athletics program. I have no criminal background (otherwise I wouldn’t be employed at a school lol). I don’t do any drugs. I have the work experience and a degree, yet I am finding myself shut out of my entire field of study. If it helps I’m in South Florida (not sure if that is doxxing myself).
While I am not in any way depressed, I totally understand why people our age just give up.

Luke 19:10 NIV [10] For the Son of Man came to seek and to save the lost.”
What I think one of the first indicators is that the Soul lives apart from the body.
The body is always emphasized to be perishable as where in the New testament as well as the Old testament seem to show that the Soul exists independently from the body.
There are more verses that hint but don't say it outright.
What do you guys think?

Last night I got a message saying that I was perma banned for "manipulating game files" or something like that (it was basically saying I was cheating), but I don't cheat. I've been shadowbanned lately apparently, and have been in lobbies where most people are cheating, that and it takes a really long time to find a game. I don't know why I could have been banned, but for some context, I am a college student who plays on a gaming laptop when I am there, and I just came home for break a few days ago, and I noticed that the "shadowbanning" started when I came home. Could it have been because I started playing on a new device? I've also tried the hacked account recovery but everytime I do that it says that they didn't find any suspicious activity on my account. I don't have 2FA on battle.net or activision but I do have it on steam. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

2024.11.25 19:30 Chris_UK_DE Reducing Property sale capital gains tax

So I’ve been researching how to sell my home in the UK. I moved to Germany and kept the house that I lived in in case I wanted to move back. I still might move back but not for at least 10 years I guess at this point. I have tenants and they’d like to buy but are saving the deposit. My current mortgage is up in 2027 which is right around when they’d be in a position to buy.
The problem is - capital gains tax.
I only just realised that there is no link to inflation, successive governments removed it and now unless you are invested in assets that appreciate more than inflation plus 25% then you are only treading water! Daylight robbery by the government in my eyes.
It’s not just the UK government though, the German government would tax me on it also if I’d owned it for fewer than 10 years. But 2027 will be 10 years so at least there I’ll be ok.
So anyway. I think I’d be looking at a tax bill of 8k. It’s my only home. I can’t afford to buy in Germany so will probably move the funds into some ETFs after the sale. Can anyone suggest some creative ways to save some money from the tax bill? I’m thinking add the kids to the deed for a start.
What else could I do?
