Hi, TIA for reading this long post. My son (Bob) is 8 and in 3rd grade. He appears to be thriving academically and socially as is relayed to us by all his teachers thus far. Bob has a classmate that he became friendly with, Gene, although in 1st grade, Bob avoided Gene because he said Gene frequently got in trouble and was disruptive. So I was surprised.
This year, Bob has been going over to Gene's house for playdates. At these playdates, I did notice that Gene exhibits inappropriate, somewhat aggressive, and definitely disrespectful behavior. He would come up to me and knock the hat off me and my boys, for example. He once slapped my behind in jest(?) A lot of impulse control issues. The mom would correct him so I was forgiving of the behavior in hopes she kept a good eye on him. The friendship continued but I did say that Bob couldn't go over to Gene's house if they were going to play video games. That's all Gene wanted to do. So their playdates slowed down. Plus, the red flags regarding Gene's behavior were not going away, of course.
The playdates slowed down, but both Gene and his mom continued to ask frequently and Bob wanted them too, so they had a couple more despite my gut feeling. It was at these playdates that my son started saying Gene would call him idiot. Also, on the last playdate, Gene pushed Bob's little brother because Gene's dog ran out the front door while he was coming inside Gene's house. Bob's little brother started crying and Bob scolded Gene for being so rough. Gene didn't reply and soon after wouldn't let Bob have a turn playing video games for being an "idiot." Bob waited until we left to let the tears fall, and mentioned he was glad he didn't cry in front of Gene.
Bob started not liking Gene as much. Bob also reported Gene was kicking at him at recess and continued to call him idiot. I questioned Bob why he would still want to be friends with him at all. But from what I can understand, Bob didn't think the behavior was frequent enough or bad enough to stop being friends with him completely. Maybe Bob just didn't know how to detach and deal with his friend seeming to turn on him. But Bob was no longer seeking Gene out; it was Gene seeking Bob out. Bob started to play with other friends who were nicer. So it became more of a passive friendship on Bob's part.
I also asked Bob how he felt each time after being called an idiot and why he didn't fight back or say much in response other than "Stop." The last time I asked Bob how he felt about it, he said, "I'm just used to it now."
Last week at the park playground after school (not a playdate but a school event), I saw Gene shove Bob hard. I snapped at Bob not to shove Gene. The mom was there too and she told Bob not to shove. I told the mom that Bob has been having pushing issues with Gene. The specific incident I relayed to her was that Gene pushed Bob's little brother and made him cry. She wasn't that alarmed, but told me I should have let her know this was going on. The conversation ended there; she didn't tell me she would put a stop to it. I didn't go into more detail; we were at a school event and I hoped there would be some positive change.
Fast forward two days, Gene hit Bob in the face over Bob not giving Gene the pencil he wanted. Hard. It was the first time Bob told the teacher on Gene. The teacher spoke with Bob, according to Gene, but Gene just sat back down next to Gene. We emailed the teacher requesting that Bob no longer be paired up or grouped with Gene. We also have a conference scheduled for next week with the teacher.
Another teacher suggested I enroll my kid in Taekwondo to help with Bob's self-esteem in case he's feeling like a victim. My son was in Taekwondo before but didn't like it. I was going to revisit the idea of enrolling him. I told Bob he should hit or kick back to stop Gene; but Bob said he doesn't want to hit, and that Gene would hit back harder anyways. Even though I pushed Bob to fight back, I am proud of Gene and know fighting back isn't going to solve the problem. Bob is a gentle soul, but I also don't want him to feel like a victim.
The face smack was on Friday. In retrospect, I discussed the situation too much in front of Bob. I spoke negatively about Gene and Gene's parents' lack of parenting, and been discussing it with my husband over the weekend, whether it's about next steps or having us all watch a video on Bullying and Self-Esteem. My son seemed to process the video okay. My son on his part said he's tired of talking about it. My fault. But he was in good spirits over the weekend. We all spent a lot of good, quality time together. He went to bed in good spirits.
This morning, my son woke up tearful and said how much he doesn't want to go to school, and hates school and would like to stay home. That is abnormal as Bob usually is dismayed if he is running late to school. We encouraged Bob and got himself going, and the drive to school was good as usual, but my husband did notice at drop-off Bob wasn't as cheerful as he usually is walking in.
I told my husband we should schedule a therapy session for my son, his first ever. I don't know if he necessarily needs it, but I do believe therapy is a great tool just for every day life issues. My husband agrees and he scheduled my son for a child therapy session tomorrow after school.
One of my questions is: "Should I get Bob's consent on this first? Or wait until the teacher meeting? Or consult with Bob's pediatrician first?"
I also started doing some online research and realize this would go on my son's medical records. I would like to ask if there are any potential negative consequences to this. My husband said I am overthinking it, but I did read that there could be negative effects, such as not getting into a particular class depending on what the therapist diagnosed, etc. I don't expect a diagnosis with a behavioral issue so I am not sure what I am apprehensive about. What kind of notes could potentially be included on his medical record that could effect his life later on? My bad if I seem paranoid. Generally what I have experienced is the less on paper, the better.
Basically, I just wanted my son to have someone to speak with that can relieve any anxiety, helplessness or even low self-esteem he may be feeling because of Gene. I don't know if he is, because other than this morning he's been his usual cheerful self, but I don't want him to be internalizing it.

It sounds like something out of a movie, but it proves that if your organization is a target of state-sponsored hacking groups, they will do anything to get to you... According to a report published this week, the Russian hacking group APT28 tried to break into a U.S. organization, whose name hasn’t been disclosed. The attackers managed to acquire the identity credentials of one of the users on the organization's network, but it didn’t help them because the network connection required MFA (multi-factor authentication), and connecting to the organization’s WiFi in the usual way wasn’t possible due to remote restrictions, of course. So, did the attackers give up? Not at all. They came up with a creative solution – they decided to break into companies located near the building housing the target organization, so that the WiFi network would be within range, allowing a direct connection without needing the exposed interface that limits connection via MFA. According to the report, the group broke into several companies geographically close to the target organization, not just one company, but several were hacked just to reach the goal. The attackers moved laterally across the different companies until they found a laptop with WiFi access in a meeting room located in a building next to the target organization. This meeting room was at the far end of the building, positioned just right to capture the WiFi network of the target company, which the attackers initially wanted to infiltrate. Through that laptop, the attackers connected to the target company’s WiFi network using the password they had and bypassed the MFA restriction. Once inside the network, they began moving laterally, escalating privileges, and of course, stealing data... As they say, woe to the victim and woe to their neighbor. In short – now you have a new vector to worry about, assuming you’re a target of a state-sponsored hacking group... Hi everyone. I have recently been diagnosed and treated for gw and while I know it’s not the end of the world, it’s been pretty hard for me to keep cool. My partner and I have been in a monogamous relationship for nearly 10 months now and I let him know what was going on and he was thankfully very understanding and supportive. I’ve been doing as much research as I can but I still have a lot of doubts and insecurities. Have any of you been diagnosed while in a long term relationship? How has it impacted your intimacy? My partner and I understand that we most likely share the same strain at this point (we’ve been tested for everything else so we haven’t used condoms in forever). I’m worried that this will affect us down the line. We already discussed no more oral for the time being and I’m wondering if that will be forever.
