I'm in the process of validating a couple of business ideas that I would like to begin to build and put to the test.
I wanted to ask for the opinions of like-minded people, possibly people who have done the same, whether you have been successful in it or not.
Whether this is... Recommending platforms to build it Tools to market it Tearing my strategy and thought-process to pieces Highlighting flaws in my idea/plan Asking any testing questions
All are very welcome.
Business: Online Marketplace
(i.e. AirBnB, Booking.com, Uber, Rover, etc.)
I want to build an online marketplace in a healthcare niche that 1) I know very well, as it crosses over with my current job, and 2) is very underserved in this area.
The website will list businesses that offer this type of service in a specific City/catchment area (again, similar to how AirBnB, Rover started)
So when consumers looking for it will google it "X service near me" or "X procedure in Y City" - We will hopefully be the main specialised option recommended.
They go to the site, type in their location, their desired service, and the site will show all the results available to them.
At first, I would make it free both on the supply side (companies) and consumer side, to allow the site to build traffic.
It would be free but would require business/consumers to log-in to view past the first page, to build a mailing list.
(Simple enough).
Monetisation
Once the site is built to a certain level, I would look to monetise it through:
Ads on the site Charging business an annual fee to add or 'claim their profile', add details about their services, pricing etc. SponsoPin their profile and/or services to promote themselves and increase their visibility/advertise special offers etc.
(Still simple enough).
I would develop the site to a point where consumers could book their services through the site and i would take a %.
I would also then use the site as a lead generator - Connecting with companies who are looking to promote/increase their leads and selling them marketing consultancy and services (branding, ad campaigns, social media management etc.)
Once this has been built to a successful level, I would repeat the process and build in other cities and catchment areas.
(Less simple but possible).
Background on me
I'm not currently an entrepreneur. I'm in a sales leadership role a small business in the professional services space and a consistent top-performer, year-in-year-out.
I earn good money and have done so for several years. However, like many on this forum, I have always had the internal feeling that my end goal is to start a business, work for myself and build a business as an entrepreneur.
Whilst I would like to build up a business, there is no 'urgency' to me exiting my company. Meaning I am in no rush to monetize and I can take the time to build something slowly and sustainably in a way that could give a better result once the business is monetized.
This also means the time investment required in building it would also need to scale up step-by-step.
Work is my hobby. I work 7 days per week already (not for myself) and enjoy developing new ways to develop new business through sales and marketing.
So working evenings and weekends to get this moving is no problem at all.
Product/Platform Build:
I want to build a MVP - What platforms/plug-ins are out there for building online marketplace websites that could be a good fit for this?
Is there a marketplace app that allows you to 'scrape' details from directories or to speed-up/automate the process of adding company details (Business names, addresses, opening hours, services offered, contact details) to the site? This would allow me to 'set and forget' the platform whilst it's not yet monetized and focus on marketing.
Is there a functionality where I could automatically push the most complete profiles to the top of the listings? (i.e. the claimed profiles)
Is there a way to give listings 'sponsored' or 'pinned' status? (sponsored profiles)
What platform options would I have later down the line when it builds bigger?
As I will be self-funding this without plans to monetize in the short-term, I'm looking for an online marketplace builder that is ideally a 'one-off' payment rather than monthly recurring charge, good enough to prove concept.
Marketing
Are there any sites out there where you can buy data/directories of business in a specific area?
I want to set up a mass email campaign to businesses to 'claim their company profile' - Essentially sending them an email showing their basic profile (no image, vage details on services, no pricing etc.) - Is there an email software that allows you to set up the email campaign with the same text etc. but displaying a different profile within each email?
