In the soft glow of a flickering oil lamp, Erya Bingen dipped her quill into a small pot of dark ink and resumed her meticulous work on the scroll before her. The room, cluttered with parchment rolls, ancient codices, and half-empty ink pots, was both her sanctuary and her prison. The air was heavy with the scent of aged vellum and beeswax candles, and the faint hum of court activity outside her quarters seemed like the distant echoes of another world.
She paused mid-sentence, staring at the intricate lines of her script. The chronicle she was working on, Just After the End, was an ambitious attempt to compile an authoritative history of the time immediately following the Event, the end of Old America. Sponsored by Celestial Emperor Elton IV Yudkow himself, the project had consumed her life for the past three years. It was a task few others would have been trusted to undertake, and for good reason. Her scholarship, painstaking precision, and unbreakable determination were renowned throughout the court.
Yet tonight, her words felt hollow. The isolation was wearing on her. The Imperial Court was a gilded hive of politics and intrigue, yet she floated above it all, like a ghost who had forgotten how to haunt. Erya could not remember the last time she’d spoken to someone at length. The occasional summons to present her findings to the Emperor were formal affairs, stilted and brief. She still received letters: warm, meandering ones from her family in the fertile valleys of San Luis Obispo, and sharper, flirtatious notes from King Gaston of Baja, whose playful wit never failed to bring a smile to her face. But even those she had neglected to reply to lately, consumed as she was by the weight of her self-imposed mission.
Erya let out a sigh and stretched her fingers, stiff from hours of writing. She stood, stepping away from her desk, and moved to the narrow window that overlooked the gardens. Below, the moon cast a silvery light over the orchard of ancient olive trees, their twisted branches swaying gently in the evening breeze. Beyond the gardens, she could see the spires of the Imperial Palace rising like jagged teeth against the horizon.
For a moment, she considered leaving her quarters, perhaps taking a walk through the gardens or visiting the Imperial Archives. But the thought of encountering other courtiers, with their prying questions and feigned politeness, made her hesitate. She preferred solitude: didn’t she? Yet, as she gazed at the shadowed paths below, she could not shake the longing for real connection, a conversation that didn’t revolve around dates, events, or the endless parsing of fragmented texts.
Her eyes followed the next lines of the text she was writing, the conclusion to a larger section she had been writing: “the defeat of the Tannerites and their Dominionate came at the hands of the League of Three Arrows in 2121, heralding a time of great upheaval in the Pacific Northwest and indeed across the West. Change would grip the West in those times: religious, societal, demographic. The Mormon Schism would come to a resounding climax, the Millenarian Revolts would rock the Christian world, Gaianism would spread across the north, and Old King Cole would drive the cults out of Colorado, among other things. The Old World would finally perish, and the new one would be born, a better one.”
History was built on change, but where was the change in her own life? The Green Sash Rebellion had ended fifty years ago, and California was safe, if stagnant. She had been working on this chronicle for the last three years, but how long would it take? Would she ever finish Just After the End?

I've been reading/listening to JBP for a number of years now, and this has set me on a path toward God. I'm surrounded by non-believers and I wonder if something that keeps agnostics/atheists from believing might be comfort? What I mean is: might unconsciously followed biblical concepts at least partially account for a person's inability to recognize the value of following/living those concepts? A simple example might be: humans undoubtedly find a sense of acceptance and fulfillment by remaining married and having children. While this may not be a purely biblical concept, it's more and more held to be a high standard by more biblical-minded people. Anyway, is there a name for this idea? What does everyone think? Thanks

This is my 14 week old puppy Callie. I finally got the food sensitivities figured out that caused her to have liquid poops, but now she has RANCID smelling poop. I’ve had plenty of animals in my life and hers by far are the most foul smelling poops. (Even my cat with stomach cancer didn’t have poop this smelly)
What are some things I could give her to lessen the smell of the poop? I understand it will naturally smell to some degree, but if I could find something to minimize it. That would be super helpful.
