2024.11.26 03:59 chrisdurand She's finally gone, but she didn't lose the fight.

My mom, after almost six years with Stage 4 NSCLC, finally passed tonight. I'm gutted, but man, she fought that fucker with every fiber of her being. It had metastasized to her brain, bones, and adrenal glands. And even then, she worked full time for five years.
In her last months, she was having a rough go of it. I was her caretaker. And she never gave up hope.
She didn't lose this fight. She chose to go into hospice. She told the cancer "you can't fire me, I quit" and refused to let it make her miserable.
She finally passed on peacefully. And I'm glad she's with her parents and the other family members who went before her. I'm going to miss her but I'm going to channel her strength whenever things get tough. It's what she would want.

2024.11.26 03:59 NienNunb1010 Just Finished Rewatching for the Million Time and Here's How I'd Rank The Show

Just Finished Rewatching for the Million Time and Here's How I'd Rank The Show From worst to best:
  1. Season 8 - The Office at its worst is still better than a lot of other sitcoms. While there's a lot of plot lines that kind of don't go anywhere and I'm not crazy about Andy as manager, the Lizard King makes it worth watching as a whole.
  2. Season 9 - A nice return to the show's roots. The Jim & Pam storyline gets a little cumbersome on rewatch because we know they won't actually break up and there's some unnecessary filler, but that last stretch of episodes and the finale are absolutely excellent.
  3. Season 1 - As a huge fan of the original Office, it's hard for me to watch this one because it's just too derivative. That said, it does have some stand out episodes (namely, Diversity Day and Basketball).
  4. Season 6 - While the wedding is excellent and there's still some very funny moments ("hey, Cynthia"), I genuinely hate the co-manager arc and the Sabre stuff just doesn't work for me. This season really seems like a shift in the overall vibe of the show in a way that I can't quite put my finger on.
  5. Season 7 - Still a lot of filler in the first half, but the stretch of Holly returning through Michael's goodbye is one of the best stretches of the entire series, in my opinion. Plus, Dwight as acting manager is one of the funniest episodes in the show.
  6. Season 5 - There's a few episodes that I'm not crazy about, but when this season is good, it's really really good. The MSPC arc is one of the best in the whole series and while there's a slight decline in quality compared to the previous few seasons, it's still a really strong and funny season.
  7. Season 4 - Kind of hard to judge due to it being shortened by the WGA strike, this is arguably my favorite season purely from a comedy standpoint ("The Deposition" & "Dinner Party" is the funniest one two punch of the whole series). It's also (except for Jim and Pam being happy) fairly dark and explores some themes that the show very rarely touched on (loneliness, addiction, financial hardship).
  8. Season 3 - Honestly could switch places with Season 2 depending on my mood. Just a phenomenal season of a show firing on all cylinders. Every joke lands, every arc has the perfect amount of dramatic weight and payoff, the performances are all excellent. Just a remarkable season.
  9. Season 2 - While Season 3 is near perfect, I give Season 2 the edge because there isn't one episode that doesn't work for me. Absolutely perfect from beginning to end. The show is at its funniest, the dramatic stakes at their highest, and the tone is the perfect balance between realistic and sitcom-y (a balance the show would lose by season 6 and which starts in season 4). Quite possibly the best season of any American sitcom.
What do you think?

2024.11.26 03:59 Different_Fold_5932 About own concern , please help me out

Hie ! I’m 22yrs(F) I’ve been experiencing intense itching around my vaginal walls for the past month, and I’ve also noticed something unusual around my cervix. My periods are regular, and I don’t have any other symptoms of infection. However, my vulva itches severely, which is very irritating. I’d like some guidance on how to manage this because I feel too shy to visit a gynecologist.

2024.11.26 03:59 BoratMustache EA888: water pump for preventative maintenance while I clean valves.

'14 1.8 EA888 engine with 135k. About to clean the valves again and I'm spitballing doing the water pump (wp) while I'm in there (I hate taking the manifold off). It's OE with ZERO issues thus far. I've heard the WPs on these engines were cursed, but perhaps I'm lucky. OEM kit on FCP is around $220 so it's not peanuts, but peace of mind goes a long way.
Part of me is also thinking "If it's not broke don't fix it" and replacing it could potentially introduce the crap WP issue.

2024.11.26 03:59 envelopedhumour Around half way through my first ever short story. i thought i would post on here to get feedback and see if people like it.

Parousia - in the eyes of a sinner

Timothy 1:16 – but God had mercy on me so that Christ Jesus could use me as a prime example of his great patience with even the worst of sinners.

Chapter I
“Know the man.”

“Wake up! Wake up!”. Wow, don’t you just love being woken up every morning in the most nagging induced way possible? Being shouted at to wake up, having my face pulled and stretched all while being morning sick because of last night’s “fun”. Well, I can tell you right now I don’t like this routine of a morning wake up, but my mum sure seems to get a real kick out of making me miserable on a regular morning basis. Whatever I’ll stop complaining, at least my morning shower is a good stress reliever, or it usually would be, but recently my hair has been getting out of hand. I love having curly long brown hair simply for the fact that all the girls love it and I look hot as hell. But I seriously need to get this cut or maybe even buzzed. Same with my scraggly excuse for facial hair, now I know I’m not expected to have a luscious chin of growth at the age of 17, but I could at least have a better attempt at a beard than what I got now. Well, there goes my so called “relaxing” shower time, wasted all on stressing about my hair, and before I knew it, I had to get the bus for school, I didn’t even get breakfast.
Now, I know every kid complains about school, but my school gives me an excuse to complain. My mum has forced me to go to a catholic school since I was in prep. So, day in and day out, for 12 long years, I have had to deal with annoyingly persistent bible thumpers for multiple hours on end. Now I know that its their religion and all but are you seriously telling me you can’t take one fucking day off. Now I can’t just complain about school, it does have its positives. But trust me, there aren’t a lot. And when I say there aren’t a lot, I quite literally couldn’t be more right. The one and only positive that derives from school, are my friends. Mill/Milly my American Girlfriend with her long dark brown hair and hazel eyes to match it, Deeks/Deacon my best friend since year 3 and one of few people I can rely on in my life, Darls/Darla the equivalent of deacon to me but for Milly, and Cars/Carson, the only god believer friend I have ever had. And I know after all my shit talk about the bible thumping you wouldn’t expect me to be friends with a Christian. But Carson was different, he wasn’t the type to shove it down your throat or make it his whole personality. Obviously, he still spoke of his faith often, but he would talk about other things that the whole group shared an interest in.
My friends and I were the group known by the whole school for being the “dropkicks” or “the dickheads”. Now none of the other students would say this, as to preserve their faith, but we all were thinking it. The only reason we get this rep is because of everyone from the students to the almost priest like teachers, goodie two-shoes way of living their life, practically bound by the rules of the school and the constraints of their religion. The only teacher I would say I “like” would be surprisingly our school priest of all people. Father Angola. He was of Portuguese decent and had been raised a Christian. Always being obsessed with his faith, he knew from a young age he wanted to be a priest. And no, I’m not a weirdo who studied him, he just told us about his childhood. Now, why is this god loving man, my favorite teacher? If you met him, you would know. His Portuguese accent and his wise old man attitude, made for some great and merely humorous conversations. Or maybe I just liked him because the class he taught had no work to do. The only reason I would call it a class is because that’s the label my school gave it. It’s called morning Prayer, and the session entails exactly what the name implies, first class of the day, being in the morning, and it would all be based around praying, which obviously knowing me and my attitude, I didn’t really love, let alone like. But the church we would gather in had this amazing Leonardo DaVinci, or who ever painted that famous church in the Vatican, design that really caught your eyes. The beautiful, almost photo-realistic paintings of Jesus in a vast open array of scenic fields coupled with the parts of scripture from the bible that provided information into an already beautiful work of art. Don’t mistake all this positive talking for me loving Christ and me being Christian or anything, I just really like art. And I’m not all about that religion mumbo jumbo. I respect it and all, but I would rather live my life my way and enjoy it while it lasts. Rather than having to adhere to a list of rules and regulations that prevent me from living my life.

Chapter II
“Know the sin, Part I.”

It was about 2:48 pm. Finally, just 12 minutes left of school, and this day I was much more excited to get out of there. First things first, it was Friday, everybody loves Friday. But even greater than that, Deacon had a “surprise” for me, he had been ranting on all week about “how awesome it’ll be on Friday when I show you the surprise I gotcha”. I mean c’mon how am I not meant to be the least bit euphoric that the weeks almost up, after this idiot’s weeklong teasing and taunting behavior. DING! DING! DING! YES, there goes the bell. The rush of excitement I felt changed my mood from a dull timid sleep-like transient state, to an intense exhilarating surge of newfound energy. I am so pumped up that I don’t even remember leaving class. All I remember is being at my locker talking to Milly. She was in the same position of joy as me, she and Darls wouldn’t stop talking about it all last night. We both couldn’t wait to see Deacon. Although Deacon clearly had an easy way of really grasping mine and Milly’s attention, he didn’t seem to have the same effect on Carson. Deeks claimed to have told Cars what the surprise was early that week. Immediately after hearing this Cars didn’t want anything to do with it, he even stopped talking to Deacon for the rest of the day. He soon came to his senses and forgave Deacon but stood strong on not wanting to be apart of what Deacon had planned. Whatever it was Deeks was preparing, it was clear that it struck a nerve in Carson.
Rapid like rabbits, is the only way to describe how fast Milly, Darls and I ran to the school parking lot, that was pure excitement, a feeling I haven’t felt in a long time. While waiting in the scorching heat, by Deacons old rusty ford pickup. It Was the type of car you hate at first, but then it grows on you, and you start to love it. it’s become an unofficial member of our friend group. There he was the man I had been talking up this whole time. Deacon, with his short curly black hair and big 6ft demeanor. His appearance made for a more than anything else intimidating stature. But knowing Deacon made you realize he is just one big emotional softie. I was glad to see him, not just to see his surprise, but for the fact I had someone else to talk to, instead of sitting silently and listening to Milly and Darls yammering on about girl stuff. Okay, enough waiting for this surprise. Deacon said we had to go to the park before he could show us the surprise. While driving there, he mentioned a dream he had that really confused him. He said he vaguely remembers how it started, but the ending was strong enough to stay stuck in his mind. Deacon told me he had had a dream about a man, a strange man standing alone, alone in a field, and his face was an unclear blur. Deacon remarked almost feeling the strange man’s presence, from around 20 feet away, and it felt almost like the presence was coming from him not the strange man it was that powerful. The man was also holding something in his arms. He held it like a baby, but it didn’t look baby like, it looked like an animal with bright white vibrant fur. After hearing this, I started to picture what he was talking about, and before I could piece everything together, we were at the park.
We entered the park through an opening of large birch trees, with the branches dropping down in an intertwining spiral down to almost the floor, making us almost have to crawl through the shrubbery on our knees to get in. Now, where we were getting into exactly, it was this beautiful cut off section of the park, it wasn’t cut off like it had been made out of bounds by fencing, but it was cut off by all the different flavors of trees around. The trees combined with one another to make this almost fictional hidden circle amongst them. The circle was almost like an actual bedroom, with an impractical ceiling of woven twigs and pieces of bark that had fallen from the skins of the trees and had been caught by the branches, leaving an almost intact roof, that nearly blocked out all sunlight. We all got in and sat down, we were in a circle all staring at Deeks. It was like he brought us here just to play a secret game of duck, duck, goose. When I broke my stare at Deacon, to really take in the scenery around us, he pulled out a small metal container. The container was about the size of an iPhone case, it had different engravings on it, with Deacon’s name carved into it. What Deacon did next would really shock me and the rest of the group. Deacon pulled out a tiny pocketknife and waved it in my direction. “ARE YOU CRAZY!” I yell, after slapping the knife out of his hand, thinking he was going to stab me or something. “Will you just relax, I’m not gonna stab ya, I just want each of you guys to carve your names on this little box.” “Say that next time idiot.” Darls said it, but we were all thinking it. After everyone had a moment to settle down, Darls picks up the knife and the container and carves “Darls” into it right below “Deeks”. Next up is Milly, she does the same, but almost slips and cuts herself, still managing to finish carving she puts her name below Darls’ “Milly”. Last up was me. I started carving in, it took me a little longer than the rest of them, but in the end, it looked pretty good. Now that we all carved our name on this box, we were all wondering what it was Deeks dragged us out here to do. It was in that moment of thought; Deacon opened the [box]().

Chapter III
“Know the sin, Part II.”
[ ]()
I suddenly understood why Carson was so against this. Me personally I’m not against it, and by the looks of it neither are Milly and Darls, or maybe they just have a massive grin on their faces for no reason. What Deeks had in the box was weed, not huge news for any other group like us. But to us, this is insane. The place we live in is pretty much exactly like our school. An all-religious town that claims to be “perfect”, which is another reason why me and my friends are looked down on by the school and everyone else in town. Being in a town like the one I live in, its incredibly hard, near impossible to find anyone willing to sell you drugs, not only that, its also difficult to get any sort of alcohol. So, to see that Deeks got weed, and enough of it for all of us, we were astounded. Obviously, Carson would be against this, he’s against when we go out for drinks. I don’t blame him, it goes completely against his religion, but it would be cool to have just one drink with him. Deeks pulled out of the box a thin plastic baggy full of weed, and 4 pieces of a thin brownish piece of paper. He then pulled out a black lighter, with a flashy silver lining, he had carved “D.H” on the lower part of the lighter. Deacon Hill, these were Deacons initials. Deacon had a lot of stuff ready for this, it was either something he had already done often, or something he just really wanted to be prepared for, I asked him which it was, and he said “I’ve had this stuff for weeks, I just didn’t have the weed, a dealer said he could hook me up, but he had been postponing until Sunday last week when I got it”.
Deacon laid out the bits of paper on the lid of the tin, he opened the plastic baggy and portioned the bits of weed evenly in thin lines. He then started to lick the paper, I was confused why he did this, I mean I don’t want to taste his saliva, but if that’s what he’s got to do then it’s fine. He finished “rolling” the blunts, I don’t know if “rolling” is the right terminology but its whatever. Deacon then pulled out the lighter and started lighting them up. Look I’ll be honest, I am very nervous, my heart is pounding. Deacon hands everyone their own lit blunt, we all start to countdown. 3… 2… 1… Ahh God *cough, cough*. “Wow that’s strong” exclaimed Deeks, meanwhile Milly and Darls immediately locked eyes and started laughing. My heart slowed, and I started taking deep breaths. “WHOO-FUCKIN-HOO! I am on top of the world baby!”. I have never felt this good; I am literally screaming at the top of my lungs from sheer joy, I immediately took another hit of the blunt. I was in this almost heroic stance, looking over the whole area, Milly and Darls both pointing at me and laughing like never before. I had so much energy, I felt like I could run a marathon. “let’s go, let’s run” I shout “where? What are you talking about” Deeks asked me, but I was already heading out the entrance of the circle. Before I knew it, I was running like a gazelle running through the streets with a cigarette in my hand, getting followed by the group all doing the same, until I spotted a forest. “I always wanted to go in a forest, you wanna go in the forest? I’m gonna go in the forest, let’s go in the forest. I don’t know why, but the group seemed equally interested in what I was rambling about, they all agreed to go to the forest.
Stumbling and missing steps while running, I continue to sprint through the forest, stopping periodically for a hit of my blunt. I’ve never felt so free, I assume it’s the same with the rest of the group, considering Milly and Darls had been reaching near death from their levels of laughter for the entire run, and Deeks almost running faster than me, as if we really cared about being in the forest, maybe it was just because it was the first thing I set my eyes on. We all start to settle down and decide to take a stop in a little divot in the ground surround by a few moss infested logs and old dead branches collapsed over, making the whole look like a nest for a bird that had been burrowed into the ground by mother nature herself. We all started to calm down, but we kept laughing hysterically. Only 15 minutes after the blunts all ran out, I started to doze off same with the rest of the group. It was around this time it started to get dark.
“The ground, its moving” “get up, we gotta go”. I was woken up from my nap by Milly, and not just her, it was the ground, it was trembling, it was shaking and rumbling. It was an earthquake. This earthquake was like nothing I had ever felt, it must have at least been a multitude of 7 or higher. The ground was practically splitting, logs getting flipped and trees getting uprooted. A thunderstorm started raging throughout the sky, beaming down hail across the forest. The sound was loud and nearly indescribable, the best I could do would be maybe a firing range, with hail clanging against the wooden walls of the trees making them sound as if they were walls of an industrial factory that had been shot at repeatedly. The divot we slept in had flooded in less than a minute. The rain was nearly drowning us with the water while the hail was bashing us around, as if it was trying to fight us. There was an issue, bigger than the storm and the earthquake. We had run so far into the forest, we were lost. Deeks claimed he knew we came from the east, while Milly and Darls claimed that we came from the north. We all came to an agreement to run north-east. As we started running, basically for our lives, we caught a faint glimpse of an opening in the tree line. I couldn’t clearly make it out, but it looked like the town’s main shopping center. Aurora Plains mall. I only noticed it because of the shining reflection of the big, windowed roof, and the tall sign that stood taller than all other buildings in the town. The sign was a cross, and it’s weird to say this, given my history, but it was almost like a bright beaming sign of hope guiding me to safety and sanctuary. We made it to the clearing behind the back part of the mall, we ran out the front, and it was carnage. Cars crashed in the streets, people lying in the roads and worst of all the park, and all types of bushes alike, were set a blaze by bright dooming flames scorching through the greenery. It appeared the earthquake caused cars to swerve and crash, and for the power lines to blow up and collapse upon the tree line of the park, leaving nothing in a good enough condition to be restored. We went from the highest moment in our lives, literally, to being at the lowest level of sadness and sheer shock from the event that had transpired. Darls and Milly, bawling their eyes out. It was so bad; I saw a single tear roll down Deek’s cheek. I had never seen him cry before, he was the strongest person I had known for my whole life, he was the one independent person that I could trust in, no matter the circumstance, and to see him cry, it almost broke me.

Chapter IV
“Know the reckoning, Part I.”

It was hell on earth. The town torn in two, and all that was left were people running for there lives and others standing still and praying, perhaps for a last chance at life, or a miracle sent from God. But for all we know that miracle never came. we remembered, Deeks’ pickup. We headed for the park but were cut off by the flames expanding depth covering the oil spilt from crashed cars, leaving nearly no entrance to the park. Luckily for us Deeks’ pickup was on the outskirts of the park, making it possible for us to get out of there. The one issue was, we had to run past thick and undying flames if we wanted to get there. We looked for anything that could help us create a clearing in the flame. Milly spotted a crashed down firetruck down the other end of the park, she said “if we can get the firetruck’s hose, we can make an opening in the back half of the park and get behind the Deeks’ car then drive out of here”. It was a great plan, it just had one issue, someone had to risk running past a crashed down power line, the wire of the line was sparking and flailing about, as if it had its own conscious, and was aware of its movement. “I’ll do it”. “No, I won’t let you, you could die” Milly was more than against the idea. I knew it had to be me, “I led us into the forest, I took us away from the car, I have to do this”. “Be safe” hoped Darls, “good luck” wished Milly, “you’ll be fine” Deeks told me whilst handing me his keys. So, I ran. Right to the edge of the sparking wires range. I stood frozen for several seconds, thinking about where to go. I saw a pattern in the wire’s movement and waited for it to shift to the left leaving me an opening on the right. So, I made a break for it, the wire slung left, and I ran, as I passed the wire it flew back and almost grazed my right leg. I made it, I could hear light cheering from the group back at the intersection. Now was my chance to get into the park, I ran through the middle of the park, past the playground. I stopped, I couldn’t not stop, the park was so close to the fire the slide had started to melt, the same slide I would play on when I was a little kid, and the swing had been ripped down and bent beyond repair, that struck a nerve. Seeing the swings destroyed laying upon themselves, it hurt so much to see them. The swings were the only memory I had of my father. I was 4, and I vividly remember being pushed back and forth by my dad, I was giggling so hard, I almost cried tears of joy. I wish I spent more time with my dad, at least before he passed away. I speak about this with my mum frequently, but not so much recently. My mum always said it wasn’t my fault, and that I was too young to have properly known him. She didn’t like him too much, but always refrained from showing her opinions on the matter, to maintain a good relationship with me. I arose from being frozen in place, after being smacked in the center of my forehead by an almost kilogram heavy ball of hail. I realized I had been standing there for over 3 minutes reminiscing, I needed to hurry up.
I made it to the other side of the park; I saw Deeks’ car. I couldn’t be happier to see that old rust bucket, sitting in the parking lot, dints in the hood from the hail, and scratch marks from tree branches flying past. I made it to the driver’s side door, flung the door open and immediately sat down, jammed the keys in the ignition, and started the car. The car started then teetered out and started making loud clanking sounds. “COME ON!” Now was not the time for this piece of shit to stop working. 30 seconds I sat there, 30 seconds jiggling the keys around. Then, BAM! The car’s engine picked up and turned on. I realized I had to drive through a small dash of flame to make it out. It was terrifying, but then the thought of Milly, waiting and worrying in the center of the intersection, not knowing if she would see me again. That was enough for me to drive, drive right through the flame. As I swerved out into the road the flame just leaving the roof of the car, with a little help from the rain. They were all there waiting for me. Milly, Deeks and Darls. They all ran out towards me and immediately hopped in the car; we had no idea where to go. Our collective first thought was to go to my house Milly thought to call someone, anyone, but all reception was lost, so we headed off for my house, since it was closest to the park and where we were, and phones were no longer an option. As we made it to the turn into my street, spirits were at an all-time low. Every house that we had passed had been torn down by the elements, with nothing left to rebuild. Houses were black and covered in char, other houses had whole trees sticking through their living rooms, and the rest were a mix of both. As we drove down my street I saw my front lawn, and then I saw my house. It was bad, it was about as good as the rest of the houses on the block, covered head to toe in what could only be described as, the remains of the neighborhood. I almost started to cry, the thought that my mum might be inside, the only reason I didn’t break out into tears was my mum’s car, it wasn’t in the driveway, she couldn’t have been home. At least one good thing has come from all of this. Last ditch idea was to head back to the school. Everyone else lived on the other side of town, and we knew Carson lived near the school.
We took off, Deeks was driving now, I had to rest my eyes. I couldn’t believe any of this, it was surreal and not in a good way. As we kept driving, I could see the school rising in the distance, from over the top of the hill. As we got closer, the ongoing earthquake arose harder and heavier than before. The ground out at the front of the school started to split, and not just little cracks, it started to separate. The separation started to lead to becoming a crater, we swerved to a halt right at the edge of the crack. We rushed out of the car with the thought of having to jump, jump right over the gap. After a lot of getting ready and hyping ourselves up Deeks jumped. He made it. I jumped. I made it. Milly jumped. She made it. Darls jumped. She didn’t make it, she fell short of the ledge, we hurried to grab her hand. I was the only one fast enough to get a grip of her hand, I pulled with all my strength, and it was in that moment a bolt of lightning had chosen to strike, right in the center of the crack barely missing Darla, but it was enough to scare her. She screamed and let go of my hand, I watched in a slow-motion like state as one of my best friends since I started high school, fell into the darkness, faded into the abyss, and left the distance of my sight. Milly screamed out a gut-wrenching cry of agony. Deeks had his hands on his head, pacing in circles repetitively, breathing so fast he sounded like a puppy who had run a mile. I was still non-responsive, in a frozen paralytic state. Darla was gone.

Chapter V
“Know the reckoning, Part II.”

Since her scream, Milly hadn’t moved. She sat with her legs beneath her body, like a bundled up stray dog, left with a wide-eyed ghastly stare, a stare strong enough to leave you in fear, a stare that had seen far too much. Deeks had slowly started to come to terms with the situation, it took a lot of calming, but he eventually calmed down. I was the only one left in a reasonable enough state to make decisions, I calmed Deeks but couldn’t calm Milly. I carried Milly in my arms, with Deeks leading the way to Carson’s house. It was clear, Milly didn’t want to go, she had screamed the moment I even tried to make her budge, so when I picked her up it all came pouring out. Every emotion Milly had ever had, all in that one moment. The moment had lasted over a minute long. Tears, snot and blood, had all left Milly’s body, leaving her distraught and racked with an emotion that looked like nothing but guilt. I asked if she was okay, at least considering how okay she could be, having lost her best friend. “It’s my fault, it’s all my fault. I failed her as a friend, I failed her.” Milly wept, a sad sorrowing sight, to see my girlfriend blaming herself for such a tragic instance that was mere miles out of her control. “It’s not, don’t say that Mills, don’t” I didn’t want her to blame herself, that was the worst possible thing to do right now. “We’re here” I halted at Deeks’ command. We were here, we were at Carson’s home.
I sat Milly down and rushed towards his front door. Carson's house was in surprisingly good condition, as if unscathed from the earthquake and storms, I wondered why, it appeared as if his house had been chosen to remain. I was at Carson’s front door, and I went to knock. My knuckle reached the wood of the door, it followed through, completely swinging the door open, leaving a clear view down the house’s hallway. Why was Carson’s door unlocked, let alone open, Carson’s car was in the driveway, same as his mum’s, but as far as I was concerned, they weren’t home. I called for Carson, and got nothing in return, Deeks and I practically ransacked Carson’s house while looking for him, but we found nothing of use. It was at this point, I realized I was lost, not physically, I knew where I was, but mentally and emotionally, I was lost. For all I know, everyone in my hometown was dead, all gone aside from me, Milly and Deeks, what were we going to do, we had nothing left. It was from this moment, a switch in my head flicked, I had a newfound will to live. “let’s go” I started to lead a charge and a movement. “Where, what are we even gonna do?” Deeks and Milly were both confused at my switch up of mindset. “Police station, that’s where were headed”. We managed to find Carson’s keys, we took his car and headed down south, straight for the police station Headquarters. Deeks drove, he knew his way around town the best, and was the only one left that could properly drive. As we drove down the freeway, Milly resting in the back seat, and Deeks yawning whilst driving, signally for me to take the wheel and let him get some rest. We’d been driving for at least an hour, and by this point Milly and Deeks had both been asleep for over half the time, it was at this moment I had a glance out my driver’s window. I was looking at an empty array of baron desolate grass fields, layers of green and yellow farm like land for miles on end. There was a reason this stood out to me, it brought out a thought I had forgotten, I had locked away in a small box at the deep reaches of my mind. It was Deeks’ dream, the dream he mentioned on the way to the park, the dream he had told me in this same truck, the dream that confused him and worried me. I finally had a moment of peace and quiet, a moment to myself, no one else, just me. I went back to piecing the puzzle of Deeks’ dream together, and what it meant. He had dreamed about the strange man, with a strong presence, and a small white furred creature in his hands. I knew who the man was, I knew what he was holding, I understood why Deeks was confused. I’m now left wondering why this familiar image is stuck in my mind.
We had reached the town two towns down south from ours. Macken Hill. This is where the Police Headquarters was, we needed to see who was there, if anyone. By this point Milly and Deeks had arisen from their slumber. Milly seemed better, I looked back at her when she woke up, and she had a small child-like grin on her face, a grin that was enough to encourage me to keep going. Deeks was fine and basically in the same place as me, a place of action, a place where we knew we needed to do something, anything. We headed into town, it was bad, this place was far worse off than our town was. Tall 100-foot-tall buildings nearly collapsed and torn in half, other buildings fell upon others, as if a giant had played dominos with them. Cars crashed in the middle of roads, people were left lying dead in the streets, alone and cold, with no one around to help them in their last moments. This was known as the main city in our state, and to see it left like this, it was rough. The city looked as if it had been hit by a zombie apocalypse and had been abandoned for over a decade, but it hadn’t been, it was not even a day since the earthquake, but it was long enough to leave the city looking like this. Deeks said something that sunk deep within me. “If there is a god, then why would he let this happen”. “Fair point, why would he fucking do this” Milly seemed to agree. As we reached the city center, I noticed what looked like a bit of movement at the train station across the road from the Police Headquarters. This sent chills down my spine, this could be another person, another piece of life. Milly and Deeks didn’t believe me, convinced that I hadn’t seen what I saw. I pulled the car over and ran to the station, there were long broad steps leading down to the subway station below. I sprint down, almost slipping and catching my feet as I reach the bottom of the steps. At this point I’m sprinting down the side of the tracks, but it's too dark to see, I was running blind. I’m yelling out to see if the person ahead could hear me, and maybe even stop, that’s if it even was a person, I still hadn’t seen it clearly. I had almost reached the other end of the subway tunnel, after almost 2 minutes of long sprinting. I was about to give up, until I heard a loud clang of metal, it was coming from the tracks, but it was in the tracks tunnel. I stopped on instinct after hearing the sound, I leaned down to the tracks and tilted my head, I was starting to get a good view of the tunnel depths, until my foot slipped from underneath me, I fell. I landed directly in the center of the tracks, hitting my head on the edge of some metal and a large chunk of gravel, it wasn’t the worst pain, it was bearable. But it had me close my eyes in a quick moment of agony. Amid clenching my body, I heard footsteps rapidly approaching me from the tunnel, it was too late for me to do anything, something was standing right next to me, staring down directly at me. I was too scared to open my eyes, frozen still, not knowing what to do. Whatever it was, it started licking me, it was licking me all over. It was a dog, a fully grown, female labrador.

Chapter VI
“Know the aspiration.”

The dog seemed friendly, or it was just excited to see another human, another potential owner. I lead her back out of the subway, to the top of the steps. Milly and Deeks were waiting for me at the exit. “who’s your friend” Deeks didn’t seem to be impressed; he wasn’t a huge fan of dogs. Milly on the other hand, was a massive fan of dogs, so much so that she started cuddling the dog on the spot, laying on the concrete pavement, rolling around whilst being licked by the dog. “So, are we keeping her?” I could tell Milly wanted to; I knew Deeks wasn’t a huge fan. Milly and I were on board, we both locked eyes with Deeks, with Milly having bright wide puppy eyes, almost ready to beg for this dog. “Fine” the one word that Mills and I wanted to hear. Milly was ecstatic, beyond recognition, I hadn’t seen her this happy in a bit, it was a refreshing sight to say the least. We went to cross the street to the Police Station, the dog now following our group closely. “What should we name her?” I asked, not knowing a good name for her. No one could think of a good name, so, we put the idea aside for now, and went to the Police Station. The Station would normally be locked shut, but due to the industrial damage caused by the earthquake, the huge glass entrance was blasted open. We entered the Station, looking for anyone or anything of use. What was once a haven, a secure facility and a place of work, was now destroyed and brought to incomprehensible levels of damage and despair. We managed to jump through the front desk window, that was cracked down the middle and had one half almost fully missing. There was a body lying cold on the floor, exuding an awful, retched stench. We found a flashlight on his body, perfect since the power had gone out throughout the whole city and left the Station in a compromisable state. With the Station in ruin, and no power throughout the building, it left all once electric doors unlocked, meaning we had access to the entire building. With all power out of the building, we had to take the stairs, which would increase how long we were in here for, but lucky for us there was a chart on the wall next to the front desk, the chart detailed every main room in the building, including which floor the armory was on. Floor 17. We weren’t all too excited to run up 17 flights of stairs, but we were willing to do so. As we reached around the 8th flight of stairs, Milly was out of breath, Deeks and I were fine, but Milly was already done with running. We all agreed to let her stay and wait for us to come back, and at least she could stay with the dog while she waited. We made it to the 17th floor, and it was luckily the highest floor that was still intact, all floors above were ruined. As we went into the office on the floor, we found walls collapsed upon each other and desk broken in half, but one wall stood out more than the rest. It was a wall that had been labeled “gun vault”. Cinder block parts of the wall fallen into what used to be a fortified armory, metal crates busted open and scattered across the floor, but that wasn’t all that was there. There were what looked like 2 black objects under one of the parts of the wall, they were two guns, pistols, glock-22s to be specific. There were also some keys under the broken half of a desk, they looked like car keys. We took the guns and the keys, very ecstatic that we might get a new car, and guns, even though the guns would be practically useless, unless there was someone else worth shooting.
We made it back down the stairs to where Milly should have been, but she wasn’t there, neither was the dog. I panicked, I shouted throughout the stairwell for her, and got nothing in return. Deeks and I continued running down the stairwell, until we reached the bottom, we were back in the main lobby, and there they were, Milly and the dog. They were sitting on the front steps of the Police Station, waiting for us to come out. Milly looked happy, perhaps with a more positive new outlook on the situation, maybe she had come to terms with everything that had happened. She looked up at me and said, “I’ve got a name for the dog, Lucy.” she had a bright smile of hope painted across her face, it almost brought a tear to my eye after she said that. I agreed with the name and so did Deeks. Her Mum’s name before she passed was Lucile, but she always went by lucy. We told Milly about the car keys and the guns, she wasn’t too thrilled about the guns, given they had nearly no use, but she was surprisingly thrilled about the car keys. We knew we would be looking for a Police Force labeled car, we just didn’t know where, it was then that Deeks remembered thought of the car park, the car park beneath the Station. We headed back inside, dog and all, and started looking for another stairwell that led downstairs. We found one in the west part of the building, the darkest part of the building, but we still had the flashlight we found. As we took two flights down the stairs towards the parking garage, we found the door leading into the garage. As we opened the door, the flashlight went out. We had no way of seeing, and we were two floors below the ground. The closest thing we had to light was the flash from the cop car when we pressed on the car keys, not the best, but better than nothing. We walked through the dark, Milly holding Lucy in her arms, Deeks leading them whilst having one hand on my shoulder, with me guiding us through the dark. Silence, waiting to hear the click of the car unlocking, and the hope that the lights might catch our eyes. Deeks suggested pressing the lock on the keys, in hopes that it would sound the horn of the car. I did as he asked, and bam, the car’s horn went off, so I did it again, and again, and again, until I could pinpoint the car’s exact location. As we turned the corner leading to the floor below in the garage, the lights flashing from the car made themselves clear. In the darkness, I could see, I could see the bright lights of our way out of here. We all headed towards the car, and hopped in, Deeks was driving, so I passed him the keys and he started up the car, turned on the beams and started driving us out, but we were caught at the parking garage exit. Trapped, right before freedom, but I had an idea. I told Deeks to hop out of the car and help me and got Milly to get in the driver’s seat. Deeks and I tried our best to pull up the garage door, after long grotesque shouts and groans, we managed to get the door open about a meter, we kept pushing, and pushing, and we managed to get the door high enough for the car to fit through, right then, Milly stepped on it, And just made it through whilst we held the door up, we let go as we slipped underneath.

2024.11.26 03:59 SweeterThanSwee7 How to make money without a car?

I am like, dead broke. I’ve been applying for a ton of jobs but so far, no one has hired me. I’m trying to stay optimistic that someone will hire me eventually but optimism isn’t making me money so I need to do something lol. I’ve been looking at side jobs, but I need to car to even get there, and I don’t have one. I can’t even afford a bus pass right now. I do have a bike, but where I live everything is outside of the city I stay and too much of a bike ride. Everything is near by car but not near enough to be able to bike (I’ll keep trying tho). I was thinking of doing dog sitting and babysitting, but more than likely I have to go to someone’s house, and I have no means of getting there.
Are there any alternatives? I have no job experience as well. Of course I’ll keep trying but I want to know if there’s more options!
