Hello everyone, this is my first post to the subreddit. Iāve been following Dr. K for along time, and Iāve found myself in a situation that I didnāt know where else to go to for help. I donāt know what to do in this situation, and I also want to know how to handle the stress Iām under.
Iām a 20 year old guy in college. I met my girlfriend (21) earlier this semester. She was very upfront with me that she has a dad that she doesnāt like and doesnāt let into her life. However, he still tries to be in her life.
She had a boyfriend before me of 5 years, but her dad forced her to break up with him. Basically, she kept trying over the 5 years she was with her boyfriend (from high school into college) to bring him over and introduce him to her dad. The dad kept making excuses to not let him come over, and was out of the house for the two times he did come over. One day he told my girlfriend to break up with the guy, and went to her exās house to talk with his parents. He told the parents that they should break up, and my girlfriend responded to him that she wants to stay with her ex. Later that night her dad beat her until she said she would break up with him. He said that she embarrassed him in front of her exās parents. After that, she secretly kept meeting with her ex on campus. Her dad then came onto campus one day and took pictures of them together and confronted her about it. He told her that if she didnāt break up with him permanently, he would go over to the exās house and kill his family. She hasnāt talked to her ex since then, and was scared of getting into another relationship. She has been working on not being afraid of her dad anymore, which is why she felt comfortable enough to be with me, but that fear is still hanging over her head, and now my head. On a side note, I personally cannot imagine how strong she must be to have lived with her dad for so long when I feel like Iām starting to break. The possibility of this guy wanting to kill me is terrifying me, and it must only be a fraction of what she has to deal with.
My girlfriend has since moved out of his house, gotten her own car, and has not seen him in person since then. She still answers his calls because if she blocks him and hides her location from him, he will start stalking her to find out what sheās doing. He is a gun owner and has crazy anger issues. He has also told her that if someone hurt her that he would hurt them, and that he would rather go to jail than let it slide. Iām scared of what he will do when he finds out one day that she has a new boyfriend.
She has tried to get a restraining order, but there was a police officer there who confronted her and knew her father. She came home to her dad being very upset that she tried to file a restraining order on him, so she canceled it. I told her she should try again now that she has moved out. She hasnāt fully talked to her mom and step dad yet (who sheās very close to) about the whole situation in detail. I told her she should do that as well and see what they say. I know itās not my job to fix this, but I am now involved because Iām dating her.
From her description of her dad, he seems like he doesnāt want her to be independent so that she will have to rely on him and only him. I donāt know anything really though, and itās all conjecture. He has had a new wife for a while, and he hasnāt tried to out right visit my girlfriend since they fought. So that tells me that he isnāt super insane at the very least.
I donāt know what else she can do and I can do other than for her to talk to her parents and try to file a restraining order again and a different police department. I also donāt know how to manage this stress. The best Iāve been able to do is humanize him a bit and imagine that he isnāt crazy enough to kill me on sight. I donāt want to leave her. I love her. Please donāt give advice like leave her. Iāve also already talked to my parents and they told me the same thing, but for some reasons I donāt want to get into, they are letting me be for the time being and are just advising caution.
TLDR: My girlfriendās dad is a psycho and Iām scared he will hurt us if he finds out we are dating. How do I manage the stress, and what are our options?
