2024.11.26 15:20 mjagiel Question about bringing a new puppy home to our 4 Y/O Corgi

My wife and I have a 4 year old corgi that has developed a very protective personality around us when it comes to other dogs. In her earlier years she was pretty good around other dogs but now she gets very snappy when other dogs try to come near us. My parents dog-sit for us regularly and she gets along great with their English Bulldog whenever we aren’t around. They could spend a week playing with toys and eating/sleeping around each other with no problems, but as soon as we’re there she gets very defensive and agitated when he’s in the room. She bites his face and will come running across the room to attack him for seemingly no reason. If we are on walks and pass another dog she acts all excited like she wants to greet the other dog but once it gets close she can start snapping in an instant. It’s the point where I don’t allow her near these other dogs any more and I think it’s only encouraged the aggressive behavior.
The breeder we got her from has 3 new puppies for adoption and my wife really wants one, saying we should give her a chance and she’ll be nice to a baby, but I’m not so sure. I feel like it’s a really bad idea to bring another dog into our home and share the same food and sleeping areas (aka “her territory”). If she’s already very protective passing other dogs on walks and visiting family I feel like it will be even worse at home.
Can this behavior be adjusted at almost 5 years old and is this something that she can warm up to with a new puppy or are we better off being a one-dog household? I don’t want to bring a puppy into a dangerous situation and possibly have that dog adopt the same behavior so we have two aggressive dogs. Any feedback would be appreciated. Thanks!

I’m a third-year PhD student in Europe at a top university with two advisors who couldn’t be more different. Advisor #1 is supportive and encouraging—when I published my first prestigious paper, they celebrated with me and gave constructive feedback that actually helps me grow.
Advisor #2? Total opposite. Every meeting is a barrage of negativity: “You don’t know enough,” “This isn’t good enough,” etc. Even with two prestigious papers under my belt, they constantly nitpick and make me feel inadequate. It’s exhausting and makes me question myself.
It used to affect me to the extent where my life at home with my family would be affected as i would always be moody or simply depressed. Every day prior to a meeting would feels like a descent to hell. I am trying to adjust my attitude and try not to take it all personally. Still it is hard.
Is this normal in academia? Is constant negativity from an advisor supposed to “build character”? How do you cope with someone like this? Would love to hear your thoughts.

I have been deep in my fermenting hobby,and apparently homebrew supplies sell bulk pectinase. Pectinase is the enzyme that breaks down pectin.
IDK how well it works on whole fruit or even applesauce. However it should work fine on pectin in liquids like apple juice/cider, hibiscus tea, rosehip tea, etc.
(I drink hibiscus and rosehip teas for the antioxidants and because they're delicious.)

I posted here a few days ago about salvaging my stained sweater (photo 2). Just wanted to update with the finished product! It is a little splotchy on the front (more visible in this photo than it is in person), but I plan on just using this for layering under sweaters anyway so it doesn’t matter so much. I was impressed by how dark black it came out, the black RIT dye definitely worked well for this!
