2024.11.26 22:10 FieryCapybara Was Dungeons and Dragons the first to differentiate Orcs and Goblins as two distinct races?
In Tolkien's works, Orcs and Goblins are synonymous, but Tolkien doesn't really go out of his way to explicitly state that they are one and the same. He just uses the terms interchangeably. I'm guessing this is because he never thought that people would see them as the two distinct races they embody in Dungeons and Dragons.
But now, most people could reliably explain to you the incorrect difference between orcs and goblins in The Lord of the Rings. This is definitely due to the fact that the movie adaptations of the books seem to portray goblins and orcs as two distinct races.
But I read the books before the movies came out. When I read the books I held these two distinct definitions of orcs and goblins that I projected onto the books. I know that many others did as well. So it couldn't just come from the movies. Im guessing that, in a way, Dungeons and Dragons kind of retroactively revised Tolkien's work... which is pretty cool.
Is there any source that predates Dungeons and Dragons as being both distinctly Tolkienesque as well as portraying orcs and goblins in a similar manner?

I'm pregnant with my second girl and having a hard time with names! My first daughter is named Luciana. Dad is hispanic, and I'm of Irish heritage, so we are trying to incorporate both somehow, but I want the names to be cohesive in a sense. Or does that even matter? Would a sister named Maisy or Maelyn sound odd next to her sisters name, Luciana? Could be way overthinking this all but help! lol

2024.11.26 22:10 lxurin_hei If Riot changed Thresh's story in a future show like they did Viktor, what changes would you be happy to see?
In my opinion Thresh's story is impactful in many other champions' lore, so they can't completely change him from the ground up, so I'm mainly talking visual changes / small details. But if you want you can also go super crazy and think of some completely new ideas for our favourite boy :)
If they put him in a show at some point in the future I really hope they make him more terrifying. While his actions are pretty scary already, his visuals feel a little comical to me sometimes. Also I would love to see a rewrite of how he became so bitter and hateful, which was in my opinion always the weakest point of his lore, which is why it was difficult for me to understand his later actions as more than just "ohhh big evil green ghost guy".
Anyways, that's just my thoughts, what about you?

I haven't been able to drink coffee since I started taking my prozac almost 2 months ago. The caffeine takes my anxiety over the edge, so I've been drinking decaf for a while now. Maybe after a while, and when I get over the 40mg hump, I will be able to ease back into a real cup of coffee.
I know it's a "me" issue, and everyone is different, but how have others been able to handle, or not handle drinking coffee when they suffer from anxiety?

I have a learning disability, which makes it hard to structure my thoughts and remember behaviors fully.
I have done 8 interview freestyle and they were a massive flop, I forgot most my behaviors, was stumbling over my words and yeah trust me they were bad... I got 2/3's and rarely 4's. I made my mind up and said I would only use scripts, as I was getting much better scores with them.
I spoke to my coach and have done presentations within my last roles. For presentations I usually make a script for most of it and freestyle some areas, so it doesn't look like I am reading from a script the whole time. I was trying to move away from using script but my coach kinda changed my mind, they specialized in working with people with my disability. He said it's fine to mix a script with some freestyling, he recommended I get better at making it seem like I am naturally speaking while reading a script, which was good advice tbh. I just saw using a script as a massive failure on my part and something I needed to fix.
The issue is I feel I am being marked lower for mostly using scripts with some elements of freestyle in interviews. I mean I have been told by someone who hired me, they marked me lower due to it and didn't like it.
This is a silly question but how badly would you make someone, when it seems like they are most;y reading from a script... I am struggling to figure out how to address this. If I do not use a script I get much lower marks than with a script. Does anyone have any advice for this as well?

Hallo zusammen,
ich habe bereits zwei verschiedene Trinkbrunnen für meine Katzen ausprobiert, aber leider bleibt das Problem das gleiche: Mein 9 Monate alter Kater schafft es immer wieder, Teile des Brunnens herauszuziehen oder zu verschieben, wodurch das Wasser nicht mehr richtig fließt und überall Wasser auf dem Boden landet. Auch rutschfeste Matten helfen nicht, da der Brunnen trotzdem weggeschoben wird.
Beide Brunnen hatten unterschiedliche Designs (beides Edelstahl), aber das Problem besteht weiterhin. Meine andere Katze ist nicht betroffen, es ist wirklich nur der Kater.
Hat jemand von euch ähnliche Erfahrungen gemacht oder Tipps, wie man das verhindern kann, ohne den Brunnen dauerhaft zu fixieren (da ich ihn regelmäßig reinigen muss)? Vielleicht gibt es ein spezielles Modell oder eine Lösung, die besonders stabil ist?

I was searching on the topic, and I didn't quite find any good advice about mounting a defense with few active/eligible members
In my guild, there are typically 15 players with various level of character power. Being myself a more strategic dude than a battle-skilled one, I want to discuss some takes and hear fresh ideas about the topic.
Is it a good idea to "guide" the enemy into certain "path" with carefully placed undefended buildings? Is it a good idea to leave the first row (front lines) empty, and pile up defense in second and third rows, with the best players on third? Maybe a checkered defense instead?
I'm writing while walking, so I can't offer a more in-depth analysis right now, but I'll be glad to interchange some ideas with you.
