i just want to preface this by saying i am (obviously) not diagnosed, and could very well not have pots, but something similar.
so, yesterday i had an appointment with a cardiologist to talk about the issues happening (almost passing out multiple times per day when going from laying / sitting to standing..) and it did not go well, at all, to say the least.
first, they had an ekg done even though i already had one last month, not a big deal though, just kind of confusing.
but then, another nurse came in to do what was basically a poor manâs tilt table test, just not referred to as that. except, from my understanding, it was done completely wrong. she had me sit, then lay down, and then stand, but she didnât monitor my heart rate for longer then 40 seconds each. not to mention when she did the standing one, she re did it a second time with no explanation and didnât even record the highest it got, which i assume theyâre supposed to do? my heart rate got up to 150 and she only put 137.
the doctor was 10x worse though. he came in, told me my ekg was normal (which i already knew), and that my heart rate was normal as well (which.. no.. but okay?) and then went on to say he was sure i already knew why it was happening (blood pooling, that kind of thing), i said i did know, and then he said he was going to explain it anyway. (felt like mansplaining, but itâs his job i guess, so benefit of the doubt).
while explaining it, he said he was sure iâd already heard of things like POTS (which was said with a bit of a dismissing tone; for context), but that it was normal. he told me that a lot of teenage girls (context, im a teenage girl), come in saying they have these symptoms, then backtracked after a few seconds to add âand boys tooâ.
he told me that what was happening is normal, and that i should drink more water (i drink plenty) and.. to put my feet up. that was genuinely his only advice.
he told me that he could put me on a medication (didnât even specify which) but went on for at least 10 minutes about how he doesnât recommend it, thinks itâs bad, thinks i shouldnât, that he would tell his daughter the same thing (??), and that he doesnât think you should be on medication if your daily life isnât interrupted (i canât walk without taking a break after 30 minutes.. but okay), but that itâs my choice.
to be clear, it 100% did not feel like my choice and i felt like i would be judged if i said i wanted to. i chose not to, because honestly i donât want to have any connection to this doctor.
after that, he handed me a picture of what the ekg said and said it was proof nothing was wrong, and to show it to my sisters if they didnât believe me (??đ) and then stared at me for like 2 minutes while i just awkwardly looked over the paper that i had no idea how to read.
anyway, he left the room and i cried, obviously. and then for some reason i broke out in a rash on my chest??? felt like bad luck or something.
i donât want to make it seem like im saying it felt misogynistic/biased or something just because he was a male doctor, because iâve had lovely male doctors before, but it genuinely felt like he simply didnât believe me because of my age and gender. i do believe he would have taken another male more seriously tbh. the entire time, i felt like i was being talked down to and i kept tearing up. (which was super embarrassing..).
