Hi everyone, I’m in a bit of a bind and could use some advice about handling a situation with a professor I really admire.
I emailed my professor about three weeks ago to ask for a letter of recommendation for graduate school. He taught me three courses and supervised my capstone project over the summer. I did well in his courses, and I think I especially impressed him during the capstone since it was closely supervised. I feel like he could write me a strong LOR, and it’s really important for one program I’m applying to with a December 2nd deadline.
Unfortunately, I haven’t received a response yet. I followed up politely twice (last week and again yesterday) and even had a friend visit his office hours. My friend said the professor promised to reply at the start of this week, but I haven’t heard anything yet. He’s juggling five courses, so I understand he’s very busy, but I’m running out of time.
In the meantime, I’ve reached out to other professors as backups, but most said they couldn’t write me a strong letter. I also emailed the assistant dean for advice, and he generously offered to help by contacting the professor or finding alternatives. I’m wondering if I should ask my friend to visit his office hours again or if that might come off as too pushy. I don’t want to jeopardize the relationship, but I really need his approval to list him as a referee.
Do you think I should:

  1. Wait a couple more days and hope he responds?
  2. Ask my friend to check in during his office hours again?
  3. Accept the assistant dean’s offer to reach out on my behalf?
  4. Try to secure a backup professor for just this one application?
  5. Or perhaps something else?
I’d really appreciate any advice or suggestions on how to handle this situation respectfully but effectively. What would you do in my shoes? Thank you!

2024.11.27 15:35 lucraak Gravel bike for commuting (mostly tarmac)

Hi all,
I’m on the search for a autumn/winter bike next to my road bike (Lapierre Aircode). The current tire clearance on my bike is 25mm which is a bit itchy on cold wet days. However most of my riding will be done on tarmac since I commute twice a week (30k one way). I live in The Netherlands so it is safe to say the autumn and winter will deliver plenty rain.
I was thinking about a gravel bike for a few reasons:

  1. Bigger tire clearance to run wider tires for more grip on wet and slippery days (is this really the case?)
  2. More relaxed geometry (obviously depends on the model) for a more upright position since i need to be a bit more alert in the slippery wet weather.
  3. Mounting points for proper fenders
Would it make sense to go with a gravel bike for this or should i go looking for a road bike with a more relaxed geometry and wider clearance?maybe it is the wrong sub to ask ;-)
I am aiming at a Giant Revolt (really high stack and short reach) but also a bit worried that it might be a bit of a too relaxed geometry that it might lose the racy feel of a bike.

Hello!
Hello! My Fiancé (M33) and I (F30) are set to get married this upcoming year. We were briefly discussing it last night and we’re talking about how close it was coming and all the anxiety I was feeling and going to feel on the day of and I was told that I shouldn’t feel any anxiety at all, that it’s just another day and nothing changes Other than the fact that I have bling on my finger.
Is this all men’s view towards marriage? We were together for four years separated for two and back together again this time for seven. I completely disagree that it’s just a day and that nothing changes because for me everything changes.
I’ve been doing a lot of mental and physical healing and growing and it just seems like anything we discuss I have a severe disagreement with, but am not yet at the point where I can fully use my voice. It comes and goes but at times when I could really use it, it’s lost. I feel like I’m gaslit often, made to feel confused. I just don’t know what the future holds for me now.

In the past month, I launched a tool that solved a specific problem—and to my surprise, it attracted 10 paying customers in just 30 days, mostly mid-sized companies. I never thought addressing such a simple issue would lead to this kind of response.

He explained that with big-ticket items like jewelry, customers prefer a more personalized experience. They don’t just want to browse; they want to feel like they’re getting individual attention.
This got me thinking. As Steve Jobs said, “Start with the customer and work backward with technology.”
For the first time, I saw a clear use case for AI that felt relevant and impactful. I’d avoided jumping into AI until now because I hadn’t come across a problem worth solving—but this was it.
I spun up a quick solution using GPT to solve his specific problem. The result? A virtual sales assistant that eliminates manual intervention and delivers product information instantly.
This enabled me to: 1. Upload a CSV of all the products 2. Add additional prompts specific to his business (like contact information for closing sales, store address, etc). 3. That's it! Customers interact with a chat-like interface directly via a unique link that can be shared over WhatsApp or any social media.
This is now in use, not only does this save him time, but it also helps screen less serious customers using interaction patterns visible on a dashboard. I’m learning so much with each new customer interaction and adding features continuously.

I’ve loved this coat for years and own it in multiple colours (taking advantage of clientele to purchase a new one every 1-2 years). Just received my latest order (light grey colour) and let me tell you it is NOT the same. The previous versions had beautiful seaming along the body, collar, and belt which added structure and a unique style. The new version has none of this detail, and is just the most basic belted coat. It looks downright floppy and sad next to the previous version, nowhere near as distinctive. I will be returning.

2024.11.27 15:35 Radical_Armadillo C&P examiner told me about 3 diagnosis on my exit physical I wasn't aware of (10 years ago). How should I proceed with a Claim on them?

I went in for a C&P exam for my feet then the doctor said "I see you were diagnosed with Rhinitis, shoulder strain, and anxiety" on your exit physical/post deployment screening (this was 10 years ago). Then she asked why I never followed up about it, to which I said I had a lot going on and must have forgotten.
She also said Rhinitis should be the easiest because I was deployed in two areas covered in the Pact act...
anyways, I have been getting treatment for anxiety since 2020 but haven't seen a doctor about my Rhinitis or Shoulder since my exit physical. Any recommendations on how to proceed would be greatly appreciated.
