Exam date: 10th of November 2024
Background: Non-US IMG. YOG: 2023.
My story in brief and length of preparation: 2 years not dedicated. 3 weeks dedicated.
A friend of mine took step 1 while we were internship year and i bought uworld just out of curiosity to see what it's about. I would read FA , watch B&B and then do Uworld system wise. Timed. But I would take big gaps between each systems. Like WEEKS or MONTHS . which was a big mistake.
March 2024 I decided I wanna do the exam. I reset Uworld. Did 40-80 Questions daily, random, untimed. and then took 3 weeks leave from my work during which I only did and reviewed NBMEs. My tips and most importants takeaways,
1.DO NOT PROLONG YOUR PREPARATION. This is an exam that requires you to know a vast amount of knowledge. You will keep forgetting things. this is a fact. The more compact , intense and focused your preparation is, the more sharp and vivid you can retain and recall info.
2.Do not spend too much time taking notes from uworld. Limit it to the tables, images and educational objectives. only spend considerable amounts of time on Qs you got wrong and questions where you guessed.
3.Do at least 40-80 Qs per day. keep it intense. Take one day break every week.
- Ethics and Biostats are now a big portion of the exam. combined they make up to 12 Qs per block.
- Focus on deep understanding of concepts and your analysis rather than obsessing over knowing every little minute detail.
Here is what people get wrong. When someone says the exam is the NMBEs ,most people think they mean the same questions show up. THIS IS NOT WHAT IT MEANS. IT MEANS THE SAME TOPICS AND CONCEPTS show up, not the same questions. ( You might get 1-2 repeats, I myself didn't get a single one)
FOR EXAMPLE: In the NBMEs there are several questions about McArdle disease. In the real deal, I got asked 6 question about Von Gierke disease. SO THE POINT IS TO KNOW THE GLYCOGEN STORAGE DISEASES NOT TO JUST STUDY MCARDLE DISEASE. This is what they want you to know.
ANOTHER EXAMPLE: In one of the NBMEs there is a pic which is a cross section of the penis with labels asking where sildenafil acts and your are supposed to choose the label of the corpus cavernosum. In the real deal the same exact pic shows up where they ask you to choose where a Foley is supposed to be inserted and you are supposed to choose the label of the urethra (Yes many of the questions are so fuckin obvious and easy you won't believe it, a point i will take about later). SO THE POINT IS TO KNOW THE ANATOMY OF THE MALE PENIS.
7. How to do NBMEs.
I only started doing NBMEs during the 3 weeks dedicated study period. PRACTICE LIKE YOU PLAY. I would do the nbme under strict timed exam conditions and I would take the breaks in the same manner I planned on taking , eat the same food (protein bars) during these breaks. Do the NBMEs under the same conditions you would do the exam.
I would do the NBME on one day and then spend the next 2-3 days reviewing it. Now as mentioned earlier, when you review the nbme you review THE WHOLE TOPIC RELATED.
FOR EXAMPLE. If you got a question wrong regarding Crohns , don't just review Crohns, you also review ulcerative colitis. You got a question about silicosis wrong , you don't just review silicosis. You go and read all of the pneumoconiosis, and so on.
I would briefly read the questions I got right and HAMMER THE ONES I GOT WRONG. I would recognize my weak areas and review them from the Mehlmann PDFs (The man is a goat).
8. Mehlmann Arrows are a must do before your exam. Try to do it at least twice, the 2nd one being a few days before your exams.
- Respect the test but keep things in perspective. This is a test supposed to be taken by 2nd year medical students. This is not you specialty board exams or your phD thesis. Almost half the questions are easy , obvious and in your face. about a quarter requires some thought and a quarter that's just experimental or is there to fuck with your head. If you know the easy obvious answers you will pass. As one guy said here before, if you had to choose a brain setting between dumb and overly smart , choose the dumb one. (If you are reading this I wanna say thank you). This is not Uworld where the question writers get off on playing gotcha ( https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EMYk2RZl3M8&ab_channel=FunnyorNot ). So only do NBMEs during dedicated.
My scores:
Uworld 1st round: 100% finished, 66% correct
Uworld 2nt round : 92% finished, 78% correct
26: 81%
27: 84%
28: 88%
29: 86%
30: 84%
31: 85%
Free 120: 76% . I did it 2 days before the exam where my pre-exam anxiety was peaking. Try to finish doing all of your assessments a week before your exam and spend that week reviewing your weak areas.

2024.11.27 17:40 stopthatmonkey Question for those saying "The MAGA voters will see their mistake once Trump screws them over"...didn't we say this in 2016/17? Why is now different?
This is some severe deja vu, as I remember thinking this as a thought to get me through 2017, specifically about repealing the ACA and all the tariffs/price increases on soybeans for farmers. I even thought that "this needed to happen", like a fever coming to a breaking point, and Trump voters will see the effect their vote had, see that it screwed them, and not vote for him again. I even remember town halls in red states with people so angry that their healthcare might be repealed. Add in the mismanagement of COVID and having family members die from it, hispanic immigrants and kids being rounded up and deported, overturning Roe, I really thought there's no way these groups won't see their mistake.
Whelp.
A lot of those states/counties/voters voted for him again and again, and now we've got a second Trump term just four years later.
I have no doubts that these people will be hit hard by the policies they voted for and didn't understand, but I also know that when Trump blames the Dems/Biden/"Globalists"/Jhina/etc, they'll believe him.
Can someone explain to me why they think this time will be different?

Hello hello. I turned 20 March 2023, my symptoms started October 2023, slight pinch in my right hip when I sneezed or coughed. Fast forward a year later, my knee hurts and pops a lot, I feel pins and needles in both my feet, left side of my face, arm (this one is new), lower back pain, and the pinching is still there but now more painful. My doctor tells me it’s nothing but my pain and symptoms are really scaring me. Please tell me if my MRI results are bad.

I was seeing a guy pretty casually over the summer- I could tell he was getting feelings for me but I was not in a place to get into anything more serious. I was very upfront with where I was and how I felt and said I’d understand if he wanted to move on. At that time he said he was wanting casual still so we continued but I kind of backed off out of fear of hurting him.
I continued to date others casually and eventually realized I was ready for something more significant (a few months later) so I reached out and asked if he was seeing someone new and he said he was but it was a casual thing but exclusive.
He said he’d want to be friends and he’d let me know if anything changed. Then we ended up hooking up one last time (mid September) and it’s been downhill for me since then.
He’s still seeing this new person but we tried to be friends and he has said several times that he had no choice but to move on, he didn’t want to but he was upset when I kind of backed off.
It’s been a week and a half of no contact after I told him that I cannot be friends- he was genuine about remaining friends. He was never inappropriate again and was very clear that this was a friendship and nothing more. I told him I can’t talk to him until/unless he chooses me bc it is too hard for me. He understood and we wished each other well and said we hope we find happiness blah blah.
This is the first time since we met that we aren’t actively texting.
Has anyone messed up something great and gone into no contact wirh success of them coming back? I know I’m in the wrong here but I can’t help but think there is a chance he will miss me and reach out. Am I insane? 🤪
