I know the idea is there is nothing, but I don't understand how do we know what is there, did we do any experiments? Or any math calculations? How is it that "nothing" takes up space? I asked this to my quem teacher in high school, about 20y ago. She said we don't know. Do we know anything new now?

So for context I am 23 male my back pain has been coming and going every couple weeks for about a year. But when it’s there it is easily the worse pain I have ever felt. The pain is situated in the lower right side of my back, very close to my butt.
The back pain makes it incredibly hard for me to do basic tasks, and makes sleeping extremely painful. I usually sleep with a body pillow in between my legs at night and when I’m laying on my back trying to turn over to my side I get this overbearing pain in my back. It honestly feels like someone has a knife in my back when I’m turning over. Sneezing or coughing can be extremely painful as well.
I find it odd that my pain is at it’s worse when I am laying down. In the mornings it is the absolute worse pain. In the middle of the day, the pain comes and goes, and at night I find myself having an incredibly hard time getting comfortable without my back hurting so much.
I have gone to physio for a duration of around 4 months and it would help here and there but ultimately the pain kept coming back so I stopped going. Now the pain is at its worse it’s ever been.
I have no idea what I should do and how I can make the pain go away. Does anybody have any advice for me?

A couple months in now and starting to feel great. My doctor thinks I might be one of those people that metabolizes medication a certain way and I end up having a big impact from a low dose. Started at 12.5mg and had big time headaches, no appetite, and odd serotonin rushes in the middle of the night. Up to 25mg and had the same side effects but amplified. We kept it at 25mg since the side effects were pretty substantial there and really felt awful for a while.
First started sertraline after extreme burnout and DPDR exacerbated my IBD symptoms, so my doctor wanted me to try sertraline after success in other patients for the same condition. It turned out to help with that and more. It gave me back so much I’d lost over the past couple years to these physical and mental issues, including my sex drive, a somewhat normal appetite (I realized that my GI system was moving so fast, I was insatiably hungry — sertraline completely slowed it down), sleep that makes me feel truly rested, and generally the intense anxious edge I’ve had is dulled.
The main downsides are more bittersweet than anything — I have to eat really intentionally because my appetite doesn’t always want to cooperate and I find that I’m no longer able to overwork, once my brain and body are done working then it’s time to rest. I had to drop a couple of side projects because of this (as if the extreme burnout wasn’t already the sign lol)—on the other side of this, it brought a little more struggle financially but some freedom in other ways. Worth it.
If you’re just starting, I really hope you stick with it and give it a fair shot. Everyone is so different but if it works for you it can give you so much life back. If sertraline isn’t for you, I hope you find the right medication that helps bring you some balance and relief. It’s a journey and it took me years to even take this step. You’ve got this.
