The other day I was watching an interview of Marilyn Vos Savant (the interview is from several years ago). She said something that struck a cord with me: the idea that high IQ people should go into STEM and the idea that STEM attracts all or most of the smart people are nonsense. She asked, "Wouldn't it be great to see a smart person look at the world through a microphone instead of through a microscope?" Although she didn't expressly state the implications of her thought process, it seemed rather obvious to me: so much of science today is reactive - it is geared towards solving problems that society has created through bad policies. And bad policies are often the product of bad politicians. And bad politicians are often - although not always - politicians who lack the analytical ability to grapple with the myriad nuances and complexities that characterize the challenges that beset our world. Even if bad politicians are surrounded by extremely bright advisers, the politicians call the ultimate shots, and nothing can quite compensate for an insufficiently capable intellect.
Of course, a high IQ is not sufficient to be a good politician. At the very least, however, it seems a bare minimum requirement to be an effective one, i.e., one who can actually effect the change a society needs.

20M dealing with sexual ocd, might be seeking reassurance but this has been driving me crazy. The past couple months my ocd has been at an all time high and it’s been attacking things that I feel make me “me”, like video games or movies. I’d typically use things like that to escape from this living hell of a disorder. I try so hard to not associate my interests with my ocd that my brain automatically associates it with it. Anyone relate? Does it ever get better? Will this taint the things I like?

2024.11.28 05:31 JUST-A-GHOS7 Chalazion about to burst? Help!
Long story short, I'm about a month or less into blepharitis/chalazion. It got kind of better, but in the last few days has gotten a LOT worse. I know not to squeeze it or anything, but I'm certain it's about to rupture on its own.
IIRC, the first doctor said that if it were to rupture or something, that's a hospital visit, not a "make an appointment and wait to see a doctor" visit, because it can seriously mess up your eye/eyelid if not tended to quickly and has a risk of spreading infection into the actual eye. If/when it pops, should I really rush to the hospital right away? I don't necessarily mind, I just don't want to walk into the ER and look like an idiot if it's not that serious. It's Thanksgiving tomorrow and I have an appointment with my normal GP on Friday. I've been trying to see an opthalmologist for weeks, but they've had no availability. Please advise.

I'm a healthcare professional. My work is sad - serious mental illness and addictions. I work with the sickest of the sick in the community, and everything mostly rolls off my back. I am good at maintaining boundaries. But 2 weeks ago something happened to a patient. Something that would normally not have really bothered me, but this time it did. And this, combined with a whole bunch of little things going wrong in my personal life kind of made something snap in me today.
I had a bad day. Just one of those days where things go wrong at work, but nothing life-altering. But in between work obligations, I'm worried about my living situation, my child who is struggling with anxiety, my partner who has been sick for a month with pneumonia, my own mental health stuff, etc...chronic, stressful things that are again, not life altering on their own, but piled together, the stress is palpable.
So then I got a flat tire and the place I took it to in the middle of my work day wouldn't fix it. One technician said it could be repaired, the other said it couldn't. So they sent me away. Driving on a spare for the second day. I find another shop that will take me if I can get there in 15 mins, so I hop in my car and figure I will have just enough time to get this dealt with, see my last patient and pick up my kid from daycare.
Then I look down at my phone to see how long the drive will be to the shop and a cop sees me. Pulls me over. I immediately started having the most intense panic attack I have ever experienced. I couldn't get my license out of my wallet because my hands were shaking so hard. I was sobbing and couldn't stop. In the end the cop was understanding and let me go with a warning. I think I scared the shit out of him. I scared myself. It was just the last straw for me today.
I sat there for 10 minutes afterward, just bawling. Managed to somehow see my last patient of the day, but didn't get my tire repaired.
I have been tearing up on and off all night. I'm so embarrassed, ashamed, cringing at the recollection of that interaction. I keep replaying it over and over and catastrophizing about what this incident means for my future. I'm hopeless, worthless, a terrible parent, partner, friend. I will never be happy, never live the life I want to live. Because of me. Because of how messed up I really am...and now someone has witnessed this mess in my brain. How humiliating and demeaning.
I know what I would tell a patient or another person if they were in my shoes. I know what resources I would give them and how to get them help. But for me, I just feel lost. And I can't tell anyone in my sphere, so I've dumped it on you, Reddit. Just looking for some commiseration as I lay in bed. Sorry. Thanks.
