2024.11.28 15:39 Souljumper888 The complexity behind the pronoun question: an Analysis
Let me start with I did not really want to do this post, but I feel somewhat obliged to share my take on this controversy. Lets start with I do not mind pronouns per se in any way, but execution is always key, always the determining factor.
To understand this debate, we need to split up this discussion into three groups. At least I narrowed it down to three groups:
First group will see pronouns as purely progressive and inclusive. Execution in form of implementation does not matter. Since it is always viewed as positive no matter what, since minorities are accounted for, which is ofc a good thing. (The woke people)
Second group will see pronouns always as negative. Be it out of pure hatred, simple ignorance of not understanding the concept of gender, thus viewing it as sth suppposedly unnatural. People who are usually labeled with all the insults you can imagine. (The anti-woke people)
Third group people who do not mind pronouns as long as they fit organically into the worldbuilding, do not contradict previous established lore. Who are rubbed the wrong way not because of pronons, but its hamfisted way. To examplify: You can pick every species in ME you want and give them pronouns since they have a concept of gender. The Asari are unique, since they are monogendered. We can see they resemble females. But As Liara put it in her first conversation the concept of gender does not apply to the Asari, but you can refer to her if you wish that you need a pronoun to adress Asari. Liara herself does not apply the pronoun she herself. Liara accepts it for the purpose of intercultural interaction. At least thats how I understood it.
Therefore it makes no sense that pronouns should be applied to Asari, like in this bordgame. In other words we apply a human concept on a alien culture. This process is being hamfisted, since you disregard any lore. There is zero respect for the source material. Is it not enough that you can apply pronouns, to humans, turians, drell, quarians, krogans, etc.? It just does not make any sense why the lore must be bent to include pronouns, when pronouns can be accounted for almost any species in the ME Universe.I persoanlly associate myself with the third group.
But the issue of this debate is that the third group gets lumped together with the second group, since appaerantly, which I was not aware of, some people use the approach of the third group, to hide their bigotry behind lore changes/ retcons. That was why the DA main sub banned these kind of people, since they apparently observed this kind of behaviour. I on the other hand believe not many people would go the extra mile to hide their bigotry and would rather just state their hatred directly. Nevertheless I have to admit some people abuse the third approach in disguise of bigotry.
The third authentic group, whicxh I associate myself, who are openminded and do not care about pronuns as such, just do not like bending the lore no matter what. No matter if its lore consisten or not. This lore consistency just pulls you out of the moment. The same way when you think to much about logic in a Hollywood Movie. It is just immersion breaking. It is not immersion breaking for mer if humans, quarians, turians etc use it. On the contrast it is immersion breaking if Asari use it. This is my personal issue with this.
Since everyone has a different understanding of woke. I will lay out how I understand it. If I get it right woke was originally a term to describe raised awareness about minorities and discrimination. Nowadays woke is associated with progressiveness and inclusivity. For the hardliner of antiwoke the term got ridiculous since for them it everything is woke what is not white cis straight male, which culd not be forther removed from the truth.
My definition of woke, would be tokenization of inclusivity, diversity, progressiveness. Where it is enough if e.g. someone is gay or a person of colour. Which then producers use to shield themselves behind any criticism. In other words this is a shallow attempt of representation. Which is no representation at all. Nobody should ever be reduced to gender or skin colour. These chracters should have more personality than they represent. So woke imo is the attempt to disguise their shallow representation, plus achieving they opposite they want, unnecessary highlighting our superficial differences. The beauty of storytelling was always that anyone got to enjoy these stories, no matter what our background is. Unity not divison should be the case. By highlighting these superficial featiures in a superficial attempt of representation, these studios tarnish what was the best thing about videogames, ignoring and forgetiing from which culture we are. Since in these gaming species we come together only as fans, how it should be. There are no differnces between us. We may argue and disagree, but at the end this does not changy anything about the fact that we come all together as fans, as equals.
True inclusivity, diversity and progressive is not woke, since it is authentic, these characters are real people. Look at Traynor and Steve for example. They are their own threedimesnional full fledged person, how they should be.
These differences in understanding terminology of woke leads to misunderstandings and therefore to two fronts, the woke against the anti-woke. While I just want true representation and diverse stories.
So why do I even bring woke up. I bring it up since the saddening truth is that we can not have these discussions without deflecting to these terms. Therefore I needed to clarify it.
One last issue of this pronoun debate is language. The english language is mostly gender neutral so you do not disturb the flow of speech in your sentences, since English has already the terminology to account for. Just think of the article "the" it appplies to any person or object no matter what. But many languages, like european languages are heavily gender centered. In other words every person or object which is adressed needs the appropriate article which changes based on the gender the word was given. So when you translate the word they for example into another language then english, the studios who translate invent a new word. And if this new word is good or bad depends on your perspective ofc. It is great to account for any person of any gender, but many languages would need a complete overhaul to make languages neutral. Since that does not happen it disturbs the flow of speech, because you notice it immeduately, it pulls you out of the moment. Like the Asssasins Creed games when you returned to the modern day storyline. So pronouns are great, but languages besides english need to go a long way if they want to account for gender neutral words and speech. I just wanted to add this.
To sum up:
Representaion in form of pronouns is great and ofc applaudable if it is not done merely for the sake of it. However these changes need to bedone in consideration If it makes sense for the lore or not. If it does not make sense find a differnt way to make it lore applyabel if you wish to include pronouns. If you can not find a way to make it lore combatible, then leave it out. Simple as that. However whenever we perceive this topic this leads to a high chance that our personal bias takes precedence over rationality, because of the over and over repeated arguments, which do not evolve into a conclusion how and when inclusivity should be applied. How these topics can be implemented in our games the right way. To find the best form of execution. This failure of appropriate execution leads to these kinds of debates, which leads to fanbases beimg split over these kind of topics.
