The Jewish rich men of Christ's day lived in Jerusalem in their own palaces, which resembled the palaces of the Caesars of Rome, and had country houses for summer vacation and entertainment. They owned fat fields sown with wheat, as well as vineyards and gardens of olive trees. But their main income came from trade and industry. It goes without saying that they could not personally conduct all their complex trade affairs and manage all their estates. In imitation of the Roman emperors, they had their own trusted agents or stewards and bailiffs. Then, a nurse entered, her eyes narrowing as she noticed his subtle movements. "You think we don't know you're alive?" she whispered, her breath hot on his face.
