2024.11.28 22:30 kaitlinonfire S3 E16 Elephant's Memory | Reid, Ryan Phillip, and Owen Savage
I'm casually rewatching season 3, which has some of the most memorable episdoes! I just noticed that when Reid is attending the NA meeting and sharing about how he has been struggling with dilaudid cravings, he shares that it's because he saw a suspect, "a kid," murdered in front of him and he couldn't stop it. What I was noticing this time was that he really emphasizes the "kid" description ("a suspect was murdered in front of me-a kid" "I thought I could save the kid" "I couldn't get that kid's face out of my mind"). This is referencing S3 E12 "3rd Life" when Reid couldn't talk Jack down from shooting Ryan Phillips, the unsub who abducted, raped, murdered a teen girl, and attempted to murder Jack's daughter Lindsay.
It just ocurred to me that Ryan Phillips was 28/29 in that episode, at LEAST 2 years older than Reid. So it's interesting that Reid keeps characterizing him as a child or a kid. While I suspect it's just a writing inconsistency, it is also an interesting angle into Reid's character. As a child prodigy who had to caretake his own parent, Reid obviously had to grow up fast in a lot of ways and views himself as a "not kid" in many ways. But also it's odd that he's giving so much emotional bandwidth to an unsub--a grown man, objectively older than him--and who is considerably less empathetic in backstory than the unsub of this episode (Owen Savage)--an actual teen kid with whom Reid explicitly self identifies. I think Reid's emotional reaction to Jack shooting Riley was really a lot more about his loss of control and inability to leverage his profiling skills and negotiation to talk Jack down. He clearly had a big personal reaction IN that episode (I mean, he did see Ryan's head get blown off with a shotgun at close range, it was gnarly and probably PTSD-worthy on it's own), but I think it was more that Reid had a loss of faith of himself in a way he was truly gutted by. Maybe the "kid" he felt was murdered in that moment was his kind of inner child who had never really "failed" in a high stakes scenario. Or maybe he could even have meant Lindsay's childhood was murdered in that moment (since his talking points to Jack were all about how this will mess Lindsay up forever---and well, it sure does).
Anyway, I know in NA/AA meetings, details about the who/what/where can be fuzzy and it's arguably more important to share how it made you feel, but I just thought it was interesting that he frames it as: "I couldn't save a child and I'm haunted by that child's face" when I think what he means is "I was tested, and I failed, and knowing that I can't trust my unique skills--one of the only constants in my life I could count on-- to control a situation--is devastating and that's what haunts me." It's an echo of the Hankel negotation. I know this framing is really intended for the Owen Savage payoff in this episode, but thought it was interesting to think about. Anyway, I guess it's just annoying to try to compare the truly sadistic Ryan Phillips to either Hankel or Savage. What do y'all think?
