I’ve been having some interesting discussions with a friend in my research lab who’s a consequentialist vegan, meaning he focuses on minimizing overall animal suffering rather than taking a rights-based approach. We both have mathematical/logical backgrounds, so our debates tend to be quite structured. Recently, I presented him with an argument that I feel was misunderstood. Here’s a paraphrased version of our exchange:
Friend: “When you decide to eat a fish, you’re trading a few minutes of sensory pleasure for the fish’s entire life. Is that worth it?”
Me: “Yes, because in everyday life we routinely make decisions that prioritize our own happiness—even if they cause direct or indirect harm to others (we agreed to refer to animals as ‘someone’). For instance, you’re eating soy ice cream right now, which also leads to some indirect animal harm in its production. Yet you’re okay with that because it makes you happy.”
Friend: “That’s the Nirvana fallacy. Veganism doesn’t claim to eliminate all suffering; it aims to reduce it as far as is practicable.”
We then debated whether this really is the Nirvana fallacy and if there’s a meaningful moral difference between direct and indirect harm. My main points are: (1) from the animal’s perspective, it doesn’t matter whether the harm was intentional or accidental—either way, they end up dead, and (2) we all do things that harm others for our own enjoyment; it’s just a matter of where each of us draws the line. For example, I'm comfortable eating and killing fish, but I'm very uncomfortable eating cows/pigs because of how sentient they are, but again this is *for me*.

I have this line of code where the goal is if the gems are within the ships radius, the gems will slowly move towards the player.

It seems I can only have the gems move down the screen, or have the gems stay in place and then move when within the radius of the ship.
I've asked chatgpt on how to make this work but nothing its given me has worked.

Hi! My fiancĂ© and I are planning our wedding but want to keep the guest count at around 100. My father’s side alone is 80 people and while I want to celebrate and have their support, I’m just not as close with certain family members and don’t want to feel obligated to invite everyone. Is it appropriate to invite some of these family members to a bridal shower and not invite them to the wedding? As in, suggest that the wedding will be smaller but we want to be able to celebrate with those family members on a separate occasion? How can I go about that without being tacky or rude? I know it’s my wedding and I can do whatever I want but I come from a family that values tradition; our wedding will be far from traditional and as cost-efficient as possible. Thoughts? Opinions? Flyer in the mail that says, “we’re having a small gathering with close family and friends but we’re thinking of you and if you want to support us in anyway because the economy isn’t great, consider donating to our honeymoon fund” or something along those lines, idk?

Hi, My wife has a nice 2016 2series convertible 50kmiles. We don’t need it anymore as new lease car coming in March. Should i sell it or keep it for my daughter who is 14. It would be stored in a steel garage. My other car is a 2015 5 series which is driving well. I wouldn’t mind driving the 2 series during the summer and storing the 5 series (how would insurance work). My concern is that in 3 years the lease car goes back, my car is done and my daughter is looking for a car at the same time. Any advice on how best to store a car, or should I get rid of it?
