Hello Reddit! I am looking to figure out what the name is of the certain toy I had growing up. It was a Hot Wheels toy car racer and I think it was blue but it was shaped like a house sort of and then there was a gap in the middle that ran from the back to the front and in the middle of it when you turned the machine on little orange rubber Wheels would spin and launch the car out faster and make the cars go everywhere. My dad passed away just over a year ago. I received a portion his thrift savings plan, a retirement plan through his government agency job. I chose to not take the lump sum and put it into an inherited IRA (to avoid a 20% hit). It went in at about $75,000 and is currently just over $79,000 after nearly 6 months. My portion of the plan has never been taxed as contributions from my dad were pre tax.
My wife and I are looking to offload some debt and are considering cashing out the IRA. My question is what tax implications am I looking at? My wife makes about $110,000 and I make about $84,000. She contributes to a 401(k) and I contribute to teachers retirement plan, so our taxable income is closer to $180,000. Should i withhold a certain percentage to avoid a huge tax bill next year? Or is this different because the money is an inheritance? We are in Illinois and he was 71 when he died. He never withdrew any money from it.
