Hi, everyone!
I love to collect used books and came across someone’s copy of “Alcoholics Anonymous” while thrifting. This copy is special, however, because it is signed and inscribed by dozens of people who clearly had attended meetings with the original owner, whose name is also mentioned several times in the messages inside. It has full names, phone numbers, emails, and addresses for at least half of the individuals who contributed to the inscriptions and appears to be from at least a decade ago. I made sure to buy it in an effort to know it was safe and out of the public’s eye, however, I’m not sure what to do with it now that it is stored away.
I don’t want to post the names listed in an effort to keep them anonymous, however, it also feels wrong to keep such a personal item of someone else’s. I don’t know how I would go about finding the owner without giving any detailed information though, either. It honestly feels more intimate than a family bible or something of that nature. I don’t mind keeping it, but then there’s also the issue of if it somehow got lost or ended up back in a donation store down the line. Destroying it doesn’t feel right either, though.
What is the most appropriate course of action here? If it was youa friend’s book, how would you like it to be handled? Any insight is appreciated!

Definitely my favorite lighter. I have a few beatties whos jet flames no longer work. Its not the jet cap thats clogged its a clog of some sort deep in the jet pipe maybe from years of use.
Does anyone have any experience clearing these out or have any ideas on how to make the jet tube patent again?

Hi! I am planning a trip to Japan for 2 weeks and was hoping to spend a night in Hakone from Kyoto. I think we will be staying at Hakone Ginyu for the night. What time would we need to leave Kyoto in the morning to get to Hakone in order to do the loop, go to the open air museum and see the shrine?
I also don’t quite understand what the loop is. Can we just stay on it the entire time and go in a circle and get off where we started (if we just want to see the scenario). Or do people get off frequently?
Last question: would it make sense to see some things the day we get to Hakone, stay the night at the ryokan and do the rest of things the next day before we head to Tokyo?

Hi everyone, I'm new to this sub and have not really struggled with flying anxiety in the past, but I do have some general anxiety and all the recent news about multiple large plane crashes and malfunctions has only been heightening it. My mom, who I love more than anyone else in the world, will be taking a 15-hour flight in a few days and I can't stop worrying for her. I've been on flights of that length and they are uncomfortable and get bumpy at times. I know the flight length doesn't necessarily change how safe it would be, but I just know I'm going to be awake and stressing for the entire duration of her flight (which happened the last time she was on a long flight too). To be clear, I am aware that she will most likely be fine and that the probability of anything going wrong is extremely, extremely low, and the tragic news stories were mostly freak accidents. However, my brain can't push away the tiny chance of the other possibility, because technically it still exists. I keep trying to distract myself, but I can't stop thinking and stressing about this. Please help!

2025.01.20 03:59 carefree_dude I feel strongly our landlord/wife's uncle price gouged us heavily on utilities on our final bill
My wife and I rented a place from my wife's aunt and uncle. They have a 40 acre plot of land, and had an old house on it. The deal was that I fix up the house, and we get to live in it, and play a modest amount in rent and the utilities. At the time I had spent roughly 15K of my own money in order to fix it all up.
From the beginning, things were fine. But he started building more structures on the farm, and suddenly i noticed our electric bill was going up. He said that it was the cost of electricity going up. Eventually, it more than tripled. I didnt' care so much though because I made good money, and the rent was a really good deal.
Then, I lost my job. I struggled to make enough money to pay the rent and utilities. despite the hardship we were facing, they continued to gouge the utilities. After rent and utilities I had almost nothing left.
We finally decided to move out. We had some freezers in an out building (4 total) that they said we could keep there until we could get a place for them at the new place. Much to my surprise, a month after we had moved out, he had charged us over $400 in electricity to run those freezers. The month prior our entire bill was only $340 (still excessive, but what i had expected). I asked him about it and he claims that those freezers just use that much power.
So, I have done the math. Absolute worst case scenario, those freezers, which are being kept in an uninsulated cold shed, would have used about $50 in electricity. It's likely actually less than half that used.
So, i'm at a spot where I need to decided: Do I push this, and bring math and numbers to prove it's all bullshit? Doing so would likely kill the relationship completely. They are already upset at us that we left. Or is it better to just give them the money, and let bygones be bygones?
